Beyond Argumentum in Terrorem: The Contested Rhetoric of Campus Carry

This essay reflects on the use of competing rhetorical frames of fear strategically used by the academic community of The University of Texas at Austin in the debate on Campus Carry policy. With the legalization of concealed handguns on campus, fear emerged as a prominent trope in public discussions, albeit used in very different ways by supporters or opponents of the law. Against the more standard interpretation of fear-based rhetoric as an exploitation of others’ insecurities, this essay draws on mixed-methods research to examine expressions of fear by activist opponents of Campus Carry and the way in which supporters of the law sought to deconstruct it.

This chapter discusses three ongoing issues related to the evaluation of qualitative research. First, the chapter considers whether a set of evaluation criteria is either determinative or changeable. Due to the evolving nature of qualitative research, it is likely that the way in which qualitative research is evaluated can change—not all at once, but gradually. Second, qualitative research has been criticized by newly resurrected positivists whose definitions of scientific research and evaluation criteria are narrow. “Politics of evidence” and a recent big-tent evaluation strategy are examined. Last, this chapter analyzes how validity criteria of qualitative research are incorporated into the evaluation of mixed methods research. The elements of qualitative research seem to be fairly represented but are largely treated as trivial. A criterion, the fit of research questions to design, is identified as distinctive in the review guide of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research.

As a publicly funded institution,The University of Texas at Austin had to implement the state's legislation to allow concealed handguns on campus. Yet its own Campus Carry policy has sought to erase the matter from everyday campus life. The administration deems it a “nonissue,” presuming that students have become accustomed to the idea, do not think about it actively, and have a low interest in acquiring a handgun license. This paper, based on a survey of the university's undergraduates, questions these ideas. It shows that a majority of students think that the issue is important and examines in what sense the students are troubled by its effects. While opinions differ between supporters and opponents of Campus Carry, divergences also exist within their ranks, such as among supporters of the law regarding where guns should specifically be allowed at the university. On the basis of the survey, the essay also examines how many licensed carriers are actually on campus, compared to the university's estimates.

  AbstrakPenelitian ini adalah penelitian evaluasi dengan menggunakan jenis penelitian kombinasi (mixed methods). Pendekatan penelitian, yaitu: pendekatan studi kasus. Sumber data penelitian ini terdiri atas Rektor, Wakil Rektor I, Ketua Lembaga Penjaminan Mutu, Ketua Unit Penjaminan Mutu Fakultas, dan Kasubdit SDM Universitas dan yang menjadi responden yaitu 32 Ketua Prodi dan 70 Ketua Tingkat. Teknik pengumpulan data yaitu wawancara, studi dokumentasi, dan lembar observasi. Penilaian untuk setiap aspek evaluasi dikategorikan menjadi tiga tingkatan: tinggi, sedang, dan rendah.  Pengambilan keputusan dikategorikan menjadi tiga tingkatan: tercapai, kurang tercapai, dan tidak tercapai. Penelitian evaluasi ini memberikan beberapa kesimpulan,  yaitu gambaran pelaksanaan pembelajaran di Unismuh Makassar pada tahapan proses (transactions) menunjukkan bahwa: 1) penguasaan dosen dalam menyusun dan menyiapkan administrasi perkuliahan dari 7 subaspek  yang dievaluasi  terdapat 6 subaspek  telah memenuhi kriteria objektif dan 1 subaspek yang kurang tercapai yaitu kemampuan dosen dalam menyusun buku ajar, 2)) penguasaan dosen dalam pelaksanaan perkuliahan menunjukkan bahwa dari 15 subaspek yang dievaluasi 13 subaspek sudah tercapai sesuai standar objektif dan 2 subaspek yang belum terpenuhi yaitu dosen tidak memberikan sanksi kepada mahasiswa yang terlambat 30 menit dalam mengikuti perkuliahan dan dosen belum menyampaikan materi kuliah dengan berbasis IT, 3) interaksi dosen dengan mahasiswa dalam perkuliahan, dari 4 subaspek yang dievaluasi semuanya telah memenuhi standar objektif, dan 4) kemampuan dosen dalam melakukan evaluasi hasil perkuliahan  menunjukkan bahwa dari 12 subaspek yang dievaluasi terdapat  10 subaspek sudah tercapai sesuai standar objektif dan 2 subaspek kurang terpenuhi. Kata Kunci: Evaluasi, Mutu Pembelajaran dan TransactionsAbstract                This study is an evaluation study using mixed methods. Research approach, namely: case study approach. The data sources of this study consisted of the Chancellor, Deputy Chancellor I, Chairperson of the Quality Assurance Agency, Chair of the Faculty Quality Assurance Unit, and the Head of Sub-directorate of Human Resources of the University and respondents, namely 32 Chairmen of Study Programs and 70 Chairmen. Data collection techniques are interviews, documentation studies, and observation sheets. Assessments for each aspect of evaluation are categorized into three levels: high, medium, and low. Decision making is categorized into three levels: achieved, less achieved, and not achieved. This evaluation study provides several conclusions, namely the description of the implementation of learning in Unismuh Makassar at the stages of transactions shows that: 1) the mastery of lecturers in preparing and preparing lecture administration from 7 sub-aspects evaluated, there are 6 sub-aspects that meet objective criteria and 1 sub-aspect is lacking achieved, namely the ability of lecturers in preparing textbooks, 2)) mastery of lecturers in lecturing shows that out of 15 sub-aspects evaluated 13 sub-aspects have been achieved according to objective standards and 2 sub-aspects that have not been fulfilled, namely lecturers do not sanction students who are 30 minutes late in attending lectures and lecturers have not delivered IT-based lecture material, 3) lecturer and student interaction in lectures, of the 4 sub-aspects evaluated all met objective standards, and 4) lecturers' ability to evaluate lecture results showed that from 12 sub the evaluated aspects have 10 sub-aspects that have been achieved according to objective standards and 2 sub-aspects have not been fulfilled.Keywords: Evaluation, Learning Quality and Transaction

The ways of informing students about the activities which are organized on a faculty or university level daily present an increasing challenge. The very aim of this work is to analyze and compare ways of informing students of the Faculty of Education about the sport activities on the faculty and university level. The way of informing students about the activities will be compared with the ways of informing about general sport activities in order to identify possible deviation from two different types of activities. Promotion being one of the marketing elements, so is the appliance of adequate promotion tools very important in all social processes. Numerous examples, especially in sport, proved that the activities of the sport participants will not be successful without the adequate use of promotion. University sport in developed countries surely occupies an important place in the academic community; from that point of view it is very important to determine the way of managing the university sport. The university sport in the Republic of Croatia is becoming more significant element of students' activities every day, and the promotion contributes to that. Apart from comparing the ways of informing about sport and regular activities, this paper will provide the time comparison of the mentioned researches between 2014 and 2020. The comparison of the same data with the time lag will provide the best picture of the changes in the ways of informing in a 6-year-period. The obtained results have shown that even after six years, students continue to prefer certain communication channels, i.e. they remain primary.

The COVID-19 pandemic represents one of the most serious public health threats that our world has faced in recent history. Clinical laboratories play a significant role in the global fight against this pandemic. This paper is based on the experiences of the Center for Medical Biochemistry of the University Clinical Center of Serbia. Using mixed methods research, the study sheds light on the many challenges that the Center has been facing during the pandemic, it outlines the implementation of change, and makes recommendations for functioning during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the post-COVID era.

The importance of financial literacy has rapidly increased in the last decades. The critical need for sustainable financial decisions is driven by changes in the economy. The goal of this study was to find out how the university students rate their acquired financial knowledge and knowledge providers, with the purpose to find solutions for promoting personal financial education to promote financial literacy. The study used Explanatory sequential mixed methods design, in which a quantitative part of study was conducted among 1110 participants, followed by a qualitative part with a sample of 22 students. Students at universities of technology from two neighboring countries, Estonia, and Finland, participated in the survey. The data were collected in a quantitative part through a questionnaire survey and in a qualitative part during three focus groups. Based on the results of the quantitative survey, questions and participants were purposefully selected for the qualitative phase in order to explain the content of the quantitative results. The results showed that students’ interest to improve their financial literacy was high. The assessments revealed that most important financial knowledge provider was the family, and the university came next. The obstacle that was most mentioned in the pursuit of pre-university education, was a lack of interest in obtaining financial knowledge, which was largely due to boring teachers and learning material. The article presents students' assessments, opinions, and suggestions, and contributes to the literature on Mixed Methods Research (MMR) by describing the procedure how the solutions to the research problem was found.

The way in which consent to sexual interactions is understood in the US is undergoing a transformation. Many universities, sometimes at the behest of lawmakers, are moving to adopt ‘affirmative consent’ policies, which define consent in terms of affirmative behavior that goes beyond mere silence or lack of resistance. Although these policies are a move in the right direction, I argue that their content has not been properly understood. In particular, the circumstances in which nonverbal behavior may communicate consent are more limited than might be apparent. And even though these circumstances can be abstractly identified, it is difficult to give people adequate guidance about when some of them obtain. Moreover, I argue that no matter how the allowance for nonverbal behavior is construed, affirmative consent policies unnecessarily prohibit interactions that people may have reason to engage in. I propose an alternative policy that remedies these problems with the affirmative consent policies that are currently being implemented. And I note that the justification for this alternative policy does not turn on any special features of the university setting. Instead, the account I give suggests grounds for reforming the law as well.

This chapter reports on a study that investigated how graduate students in the Faculty of Communication and Information Science at NUST were approaching integration in their mixed-methods research dissertations. There has been a concern that lack of expertise of what mixed-methods research is restricts the integrative capacity. Using a research synthesis method, the study investigated three graduate programmes, namely Master's degrees in Library and Information Science, Records and Archives Management, and Journalism and Media Studies from 2016 up to 2018. A total of 95 dissertations were reviewed, and 40 employed mixed-methods research design. It was discovered that integration was commonly done at methods and interpretation levels. Integration of qualitative and quantitative data sets resulted in confirmation (83), expanding understanding (27), and discordance (31). Graduate students dealt with discordant findings by either ignoring the discordance (20), seek corroboration with existing literature (7), or give priority to the quantitative strand (4).

This methods paper provides researchers in Nepal with a broad overview of the practical and philosophical aspects of mixed-methods research.   The three authors have a wide-ranging expertise in planning and conducting mixed-methods studies.  The paper outlines the different paradigms or philosophies underlying quantitative and qualitative methods and some of the on-going debates about mixed-methods.   The paper further highlights a number of practical issues, such as (a) the particular mix and order of quantitative and qualitative methods; (b) the way of integrating methods from different philosophical stance; and (c) how to synthesise mixed-methods findings. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/nje.v4i5.12018 Nepal Journal of Epidemiology 2014; 4(5):417-22
