On the extinction limit and flammability limit of non-adiabatic stretched methane–air premixed flames

Extinction limits and the lean flammability limit of non-adiabatic stretched premixed methane–air flames are investigated numerically with detailed chemistry and two different Planck mean absorption coefficient models. Attention is paid to the combined effect of radiative heat loss and stretch at low stretch rate. It is found that for a mixture at an equivalence ratio lower than the standard lean flammability limit, a moderate stretch can strengthen the combustion and allow burning. The flame is extinguished at a high stretch rate due to stretch and is quenched at a low stretch rate due to radiation loss. A O-shaped curve of flame temperature versus stretch rate with two distinct extinction limits, a radiation extinction limit and a stretch extinction limit respectively on the left- and right-hand sides, is obtained. A C-shaped curve showing the flammability limit of the stretched methane–air flame is obtained by plotting these two extinction limits in the mixture strength coordinate. A good agreement is shown on comparing the predicted results with the experimental data. For equivalence ratio larger than a critical value, it is found that the O-shaped temperature curve opens up in the middle of the stable branch, so that the stable branch divides into two stable flame branches; a weak flame branch and a normal flame branch. The weak flame can survive between the radiation extinction limit and the opening point (jump limit) while the normal flame branch can survive from its stretch extinction limit to zero stretch rate. Finally, a G-shaped curve showing both extinction limits and jump limits of stretched methane–air flames is presented. It is found that the critical equivalence ratio for opening up corresponds to the standard flammability limit measured in microgravity. Furthermore, the results show that the flammability limit (inferior limit) of the stretched methane–air flame is lower than the standard flammability limit because flames are strengthened by a moderate stretch at Lewis number less than unity.

The radiation reabsorption effects on NOx formation and flame characteristics in CH4/Air laminar flames were numerically investigated by using full chemistry mechanism and detailed transport properties. The radiative gases were treated as non-gray gas and their spectral radiative properties were evaluated by means of the statistical narrow-band model. The radiative heat transfer equation was solved by the discrete ordinate method. It was found that the reabsorption of emitting radiation leads to substantially wider flame thickness and higher flame temperature than those calculated by using the optically thin model, and the radiation reabsorption effect on the “radiation extinction limit” becomes more important. The results show that the level of NOx is predicted to be highest in the adiabatic flames, that is, flames without radiation heat loss, and that the level of NOx is predicted to be lowest in the flames by the optically thin model. In the flames by the SNB model, the predicted amount of NOx lies between these two levels. The calculated results also show that the radiation reabsorption effect on NOx formation grows stronger as the stretch rate decreases, particularly when CO2, a strong absorber, is added to the unburned gas mixture. In this study, the effectiveness and validity of the optically thin radiation model for calculating NOx formation in laminar flames was also investigated in comparison with the SNB model.

Abstract Detailed numerical study of laminar burning speed for fuel-air mixture is conducted using laminarReactingLMFoam solver which is a modified version of reactingfoam solver based on OpenFoam code. It accounts for detailed mixture averaged transport property calculation for reacting flow using low-Mach number governing equations. Effect of various equivalence ratio gradients is studied on stratified hydrogen-air and methane-air mixture with mixture-averaged transport model and unity Lewis number for all species and corresponding laminar burning speed is compared with homogeneous mixture. For both the fuel-air mixture, rich to lean stratified mixture resulted in a higher laminar burning speed and no significant difference was noticed for lean to rich stratified mixture when compared to homogeneous mixture at same local equivalence ratio. Increased burning speed is explained based on higher burnt gas temperature and molecular diffusion of lighter species from burnt gas referred to “Chemical Effect” in this study. Effect of thermal and molecular diffusion from the burnt gas on laminar burning speed is studied for stratified and homogeneous mixture using mixture-averaged transport model and unity Lewis number for all species. It is shown that molecular diffusion effect from burnt gas (“Chemical Effect”) are more prominent as compared to thermal diffusion effect. Extension in lean flammability limit for stratified mixture of both the fuel is shown based on higher heat release rate as compared to homogeneous mixture and extension in flammability limit for stratified mixture is explained based on higher Chemical Effect from burnt gas.

Active research and development on using ethanol fuel in gasoline engine had been done for few decades since ethanol served as a potential of infinite fuel supply. This paper discussed analytically and provides data on the effects of compression ratio, equivalence ratio, inlet temperature, inlet pressure and ethanol blend in cylinder adiabatic flame temperature (AFT) and nitrogen oxide (NO) formation of a gasoline engine. Olikara and Borman routines were used to calculate the equilibrium products of combustion for ethanol gasoline blended fuel. The equilibrium values of each species were used to predict AFT and the NO formation of combustion chamber. The result shows that both adiabatic flame temperature and NO formation are lower for ethanol-gasoline blend than gasoline fuel.

Abstract The present paper summarizes the development of a Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) based approach for the prediction of CO emission in an industrial gas turbine combustor. Since the operating point of the modern combustors is really close to the extinction limit, the availability of a tool able to detect the onset of high-CO production can be useful for the proper definition of the combustion chamber air split or to introduce design improvements for the premixer itself. The accurate prediction of CO cannot rely on the flamelet assumption, representing the fundament of the modern combustion models. Consequently, in this work, the Extended Turbulent Flame Speed Closure (ETFSC) of the standard Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model is employed to consider the effect of the heat loss and the strain rate on the flame brush. Moreover, a customized CO-Damköhler number is introduced to de-couple the in-flame CO production region from the post-flame contribution where the oxidation takes place. A fully premixed burner working at representative values of pressure and flame temperature of an annular combustor is selected for the validation phase of the process. The comparison against the experimental data shows that the process is not only able to capture the trend but also to predict CO in a quantitative manner. In particular, the interaction between the flame and the air fluxes at some critical sections of the combustor, leading the CO emission from the equilibrium value to the super-equilibrium, has been correctly reproduced.

In the present work, the fluctuations of equivalence ratio in the PRECCINSTA combustor are investigated via large eddy simulations (LES). Four isothermal flow cases with different combinations of global equivalence ratios (0.7 or 0.83) and grids (1.2 or 1.8 million cells) are simulated to study the mixing process of air with methane, which is injected into the inlet channel through small holes. It is shown that the fluctuations of equivalence ratio are very large, and their ranges are [0.4, 1.3] and [0.3, 1.2] for cases 0.83 and 0.7, respectively. For simulating turbulent partially premixed flames in this burner with the well-known dynamically thickened flame (DTF) combustion model, a suitable multistep reaction mechanism should be chosen aforehand. To do that, laminar premixed flames of 15 different equivalence ratios are calculated using three different methane/air reaction mechanisms: 2S_CH4_BFER, 2sCM2 reduced mechanisms and GRI-Mech 3.0 detailed reaction mechanism. The variations of flame temperature, flame speed and thickness of the laminar flames with the equivalence ratios are compared in detail. It is demonstrated that the applicative equivalence ratio range for the 2S_CH4_BFER mechanism is [0.5, 1.3], which is larger than that of the 2sCM2 mechanism [0.5, 1.2]. Therefore, it is recommended to use the 2S_CH4_BFER scheme to simulate the partially premixed flames in the PRECCINSTA combustion chamber.

The emission composition is measured for a prototype burner while varying the equivalence ratio in discrete portions of the burner. The burner is a three sector system, consisting of a separate igniter, pilot/stabilizer and main burner. The design allows for discrete control of equivalence ratio in each of the three sectors. The ignition sector, designated RPL (Rich-Pilot-Lean), operates from rich to lean equivalence values, and serves to ignite the pilot sector, which, in turn, stabilizes the main combustion sector. All three burner sections are premixed. The burner is operated at atmospheric pressure with inlet flows heated to 650 K (±8 K). Tests were performed for three gases: methane, a model syngas (10% CH4, 22.5% CO, 67.5% H2), and dilute syngas. The dilute gas includes sufficient nitrogen to lower the heating value to 15 MJ/m3. The model syngas and diluted syngas are representative of fuels produced by gasification process. The burner emissions, specifically, CO, CO2, O2 and NOx, are measured while holding the RPL equivalence value constant and varying the equivalence ratio of the pilot and main sectors. The equivalence ratios for pilot and main sectors are chosen such that the total burner equivalence ratios remain constant during a test sequence. The target total equivalence ratio for each gas is chosen such that all experiments should have the same flame temperature.

The instability of cylindrically expanding premixed flames with radiative heat loss was studied by two-dimensional unsteady calculations of reactive gases, based on the diffusive-thermal model equation. When the Lewis number was unity, instability phenomena were not observed. When the Lewis number was sufficiently low, on the other hand, cellular-shaped fronts on adiabatic and non-adiabatic cylindrical flames were observed, which was due to diffusive-thermal instability. As radiative heat loss increased, the behavior of cellular fronts became more unstable. This indicated that the radiation promoted the unstable behavior of flame fronts at low Lewis numbers. When radiative heat loss was much large compared with the quenching condition of a planar flame, cylindrical flames were broken up and several small flames appeared. This was in qualitative agreement with the experimental results on the dynamic behavior of lean hydrogen-air premixed flames with radiative heat loss under the low gravity condition. Several small flames appeared on the grounds that large curvature of flame fronts was necessary to keep high temperature against radiative heat loss.

The low NOX emission technology has become an important feature of advanced aviation engine. A wide range of applications attempt to take advantage of the fact that staged combustion operating under lean-premixed-prevaporized (LPP) conditions can significantly decrease pollution emissions and improve combustion efficiency. In this paper a scheme with fuel centrally staged and multi-point injection is proposed. The mixing of fuel and air is improved, and the flame temperature is typically low in combustion zone, minimizing the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOX), especially thermal NOX. In terms of the field distribution of equivalence ratio and temperature obtained from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a chemical reactor network (CRN), including several different ideal reactor, namely perfectly stirred reactor (PSR) and plug flow reactor (PFR), is constructed to simulate the combustion process. The influences of the pilot equivalence ratio and percentage of pilot/main fuel on NOX and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions were studied by Chemical CRN model. Then the NOX emission in the staged combustor was researched experimentally. The effects of the amount of pilot fuel and primary fuel on pollution emissions were obtained by using gas analyzer. Finally, the effects of pilot fuel proportion on NOX emission were discussed in detail by comparing predicts of CRN and experimental results.
