Age, growth and mortality of the yellowmouth barracuda Sphyraena viridensis (Sphyraenidae) from eastern coasts of Algeria

Abstract Age and growth of the yellowmouth barracuda Sphyraena viridensis (Cuvier, 1829) was examined in 698 individuals (184 < TL (mm) < 1210; 25 < TW (g) < 7125), sampled monthly from commercial catches in eastern coasts of Algeria between January 2007 and January 2008. Marginal increment analysis of 159 sectioned sagittal otoliths combined with information derived from length–frequency distribution showed that annulus formation occurs between June and August. Maximum observed age of males and females is 14 and 13 years respectively. Back calculations of total length-at-age were used to fit the data to the Bertalanffy growth model: TL = 1113(1 – e−0.165(t+2.251)) in males and TL = 958.3 (1 – e−0.247(t+1.422)) in females. The coefficient of allometry of the length weight relationship is 3.02 and 2.99 in males and females, respectively. Growth performance index Ø = 3.33. Natural mortality (M) was estimated as 0.45 year−1, fishing mortality (F) was 0.06 year−1and the exploitation rate (E) was 0.11.

The Malayan leaf fish or locally named as kepor (Pristolepis grooti) is one of important biotic components in Ranau Lake ecosystems. This study aimed to estimate population dynamic and exploitation rate of kepor in Ranau Lake, South Sumatera. The population parameters are estimated based on length frequency data which were collected in March to October 2013. Growth parameters and fishing mortality rates were calculated using FiSAT software package. The results showed that kepor’s growth was negative allometric, which tended to gain length faster than weight. Kepor population was dominated (42%) by individual length of 10.0 to 11.0 cm. Predicted length infinity (L) was 17.28 cm with high value of growth rates (K) of 1.4 year-1. The natural mortality rate (M) is 2.57 year-1, the fishing mortality rate (F) is 5.36 year-1 and total mortality rate (Z) is 7.93 year-1. The exploitation rate of Malayan leaf fish in Ranau Lake (E = 0.68 year-1) has passed the optimum score.

Perairan Kwandang merupakan salah satu basis utama perikanan pelagis kecil di perairan laut Sulawesi. Salah satu jenis yang banyak dimanfaatkan adalah ikan bentong (Selar crumenophthalmus). Penelitian ini bertujuan untukmenduga parameter populasi, tingkat pemanfaatan (E), dan biologi reproduksi dari ikan bentong. Data panjang cagak dikumpulkan dari PP Kwandang dari bulan Januari hingga November 2012. Pendugaan parameter populasi dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode Bhattacharya dengan bantuan software FISAT II Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa laju pertumbuhan (K) sebesar 0,76 per tahun dengan L”=24,7 cm. Laju kematian total (Z) sebesar 2,63 per tahun, dengan laju kematian alamiah (M) sebesar 1,28 per tahun, laju kematian akibat penangkapan (F) sebesar 1,3 per tahun dan laju pemanfaatan 0,51. Tingkat pemanfaatan ikan bentong sudah relatif optimum. Rasio jenis kelamin ikan bentong jantan dan betina adalah 1: 1,02. TKGI paling banyak ditemukan. Musim pemijahan ikan bentong diduga terjadi pada bulan November dan Desember.The Kwandang waters is one of the main base for small pelagic fisheries in Sulawesi sea. Bigeye scad (Selar crumenophthalmus) is one of species from small pelagic is exploited. The objectives of the research was to estimate the population parameters, exploitation rate and reproductive biology of bigeye scad. Length frequency data were collected from PP Kwandang, from January November 2012. Estimation of population parameters of bigeye scad used FISAT II method. The results showed that growth rate as follows (K) = 0,76 year-1 , L”=24,7 cm. Total mortality rate (Z) = 2,63 year-1, with natural mortality (M) = 1, year-1 and fishing mortality (F) = 1,3 year-1 and exploitation rate (E)=0,51. The exploitation rate are already optimum. Sex ratio of male and female are 1:1,02. The most commonly founded is Gonado Maturity Stage of I. The spawning season of bigeye scad estimated was November and December

Population parameters of Harpadon nehereus were estimated using FiSAT-II. length-frequency data collected from different landing centers along the coast of Bangladesh. The Von Bertalanffy growth parameters L∞and K for the species were 45.05 cm and 1.30/year, respectively. The annual rate of natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were found to be 1.86 and 2.58, respectively. The estimated value of the exploitation rate (E) using the lengthconverted catch curve was 0.58 and E max was found to be 0.582. The recruitment pattern of this species was continuous and two peaks per year. The present investigation clearly showed the over fishing (E > 0.50) condition for H. nehereus in Bangladesh. Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus forms the most commercially important freshwater single species fishery in the Cross River, Nigeria. Studies were  conducted on the dynamics of the exploited population of the species and the influence of rainfall on its catch rate. The objectives were to assess the level of exploitation and impacts of rainfall on its catch rate. A time series of length frequency and meteorological parameters was conducted. Length frequency data were analyzed using FiSAT software to estimate population parameters. The asymptotic length, Lı was 105 cm, growth constant (K) was 0.68 year-1, total mortality (Z) was 2.48 year-1, Natural mortality (M) was 0.99 year-1 and fishing mortality (F) was 1.49 year-1. The exploitation rate was 0.60 year-1, indicating overfishing. Natural mortality accounted 40% of the total mortality, presenting a worrisome trend in the fishery. There was a correlation between rainfall and catch rate, which increased at the onset of rains but decreased at the peak of the rains due to increased depth of the river. For management purposes, it is recommended that the fishing effort should be reduced by the regulation of the number of boat-days; for conservation, domestication of the species should be adopted as an adaptation to climatic influence. The main life history traits of the large Amazonian migratory catfish Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii were determined in the Caqueta River, Colombia. The breeding season occurred during the rising and falling water periods. The size at first sexual maturity was significantly larger for females (88.5 cm Ls) than males (81.7 cm). Both males and females reproduce for the first time between their third and fourth year. The growth characteristics were estimated using length frequency analyses. Females grew systematically larger than males, the difference being about 9% after the first year and increasing to 12% for ten years old individuals. Mortality estimates, calculated from different models, some taking into account the effect of body size, ranged from 0.32 to 0.42 year-1 for natural mortality and from 0.72 to 0.82 year-1 for fishing mortality, indicating high fishing pressure in the Caqueta River, higher than in the Peruvian Amazon. Resulting exploitation rates (0.63 to 0.72) pointed towards overexploitation of the species in the Caqueta. The situation calls for a concerted management between the countries sharing this resource (Brazil, Colombia, and Peru) and potential solutions are proposed.

Age and growth characteristics of the thin-lipped Grey Mullet (Liza ramada) were investigated in Eastern coast of Libya. Aging was done by two methods: counting annuli on scales and by length frequency distribution, a total of 218 scales were studied for age determination, in addition of 334 fishes specimen for length frequency distribution reading. Four age groups were determined from scale reading, and five age groups from length frequency distribution methods, the parameters of the Von Bertalanffy growth equation for both sex of all individuals were estimated at 35.4 cm, 0.187 per year, -1.14 years and 2.4, for male were estimated at 35.7 cm, 0.17 per year, -1.367 and 2.3, for female were 38.6 cm, 0.156 per year, -1.383 and 2.4, for L∞, k and t0, and φ′, respectively.

Age and growth were estimated from counts of otolith annuli for pink ling (Genypterus blacodes) and gemfish (Rexea solandri). Sections of otoliths were preferable for age determinations of pink ling, whereas whole otoliths were preferable for gemfish. Validation of the assigned age classes was not achieved. Petersen's length-frequency method was unsuccessful and marginal increment methods were unsuitable for the species studied. Growth of males and females did not differ significantly for either pink ling or gemfish. Both species had a relatively slow growth rate, had a moderately long life-span and could reach body lengths in excess of 1 m. Maximum ages of pink ling and gemfish were, respectively, 21 and 13 years. Mean length-at-age and the von Bertalanffy growth functions were estimated. For pink ling (all individuals combined), K = 0.095 and L∞ = 135.5 cm. For gemfish the best estimates were K = 0.153 and L∞ = 112.3 cm. Precision of age determinations made independently by two readers for pink ling and gemfish, respectively, was 65% and 95% within �1 annulus; average per cent error, respectively, was 4.7% and 3.1%. Paired t-tests on ages assigned to each species by the two readers indicated no significant difference between ages assigned to gemfish, but there was a significant, albeit unbiased, difference for ages assigned to pink ling. However, for pink ling, estimates of the growth parameters derived separately from age determinations by the two readers were virtually identical.

Tongkol abu-abu atau longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol) salah satu jenis ikan tuna neritik sebagai target penangkapan armada pukat cincin, jaring isang, dan pancing di Laut Jawa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui parameter pertumbuhan, umur dan mortalitas ikan tongkol abu-abu untuk penyusunan strategi pengelolaannya. Pengumpulan data frekuensi panjang dan bobot ikan dilakukan di Pelabuhan Perikanan Nusantara (PPN) Pekalongan pada Januari – Nopember 2014. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan hubungan panjang-bobot ikan tongkol abu-abu bersifat isometrik dan indek kecepatan pertumbuhan 3,46/tahun. Ikan dapat tumbuh hingga mencapai panjang asimtotik (L) = 85 cm dengan laju pertumbuhan (K) sebesar 0,4/tahun. Umur teoritis pada saat panjang ikan sama dengan nol (t0) adalah 0,046 tahun. Umur maksimal diduga 15 tahun. Mortalitas alami (M) sebesar 0,61/tahun, mortalitas karena penangkapan (F) 1,01/tahun, mortalitas total (Z) 1,62/tahun. Tingkat eksploitasi (E) sebesar 0,59 berarti bahwa pemanfaatan ikan tongkol abu-abu di Laut Jawa cenderung sudah penuh (fully exploited).Longtail tuna as one of neritic tuna species are commonly caught by purse seine, gill net and hand line in java sea.. This research activity aims to determine population parameters i.e. growth, mortality and its exploitation rate that can contribute to strengthen database on preparation its harvest strategy. The Collecting of length and weight data were conducted at Pekalongan fishing port during period of January to November 2014. The Long-weigth relationship was isometric and growth performance index was 3.46/year. The asymptotic length rate (L) was 85 cmFL, growth rate (K) was 0.4/year and zero age (t0) was 0.046 year. This length is reached allegedly at the 15 years age. Natural mortality (M) was 0.6/year, fishing mortality (F) was 1.01/year, total mortality (Z) was 1.62/yera. The exploitation rate (E) was 0.59, it means exploitation of longtail tuna in the Java Sea tend to highly exploited.

Abstract The age and growth of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, is analyzed on specimens landed in Puerto Antequera, Province of Chaco, Argentina. The study is based on length frequency distribution of 1192 individuals and growth marks of 293 pectoral spines. Previously to age assignation based on spines readings, we performed analyses that ruled out age-associated resorption of rings and corroborated the annual periodicity of mark formation. The average sizes of the radius of each ring were obtained, and the total length of fish were back-calculated to the time of the ring formation, by the regression model fitted between the total radius of the spines to the respective sizes of each fish. Such data showed a good fitting to growth models of von Bertalanffy, Gompertz and logistic for both sexes separately. Results indicate that the study of the species growth must be carried out for each sex separately and that the fishing regulations must consider this characteristic of the species since the current management guidelines could be promoting differential capture by sexes.

Arius maculatus, commonly known as spotted catfish and locally known as Tambangongo, has a great potential as an aquaculture species, but there is very limited information known for the stocks in Panguil Bay. This study aimed to assess the wild stocks of A.maculatus, and make an inventory of the fishing boat and gears in two stations in Panguil Bay, namely: Tangub, Misamis Occidental and Baroy, Lanao del Norte. Length frequencies were analyzed to provide estimates of growth, mortality, exploitation ratio, and recruitment pulse of A. maculatus in the bay. A total of 589 boats (324 motorized boats and 265 non-motorized boats) were recorded from the sites. There were 473 units of 15 types of fishing gear used in the sites and 6 types of these were only used in catching A. maculatus. A total of 3,259 specimens were collected for 12 months from the sites. The aquatic habitat of A. maculatus from the two sites was characterized by a pH range of 7.9-8.1, temperature of 28.5-29.1°C, salinity of 13.31-15.9 ppt, dissolved oxygen levels of 4.0-5.41 ppm, and total suspended solid values of 0.1-0.6 g/L. Reproductive biology analysis indicates that eggs start to mature from October to December, then spawning starts from January to March, and the fish fry recruitment starts in April and May. A. maculatus can grow up to 98.95 cm with an asymptotic length of 98.86 cm (K value = 0.35) equivalent to asymptotic weigth of 8,750 g. Mortality Z = 0.99, with natural mortality M = 0.67 and fishing mortality F = 0.33. This study revealed that A. maculatus in Panguil Bay is not over-exploited since the exploitation rate (E = 0.33) is minimal and large individuals can still be collected from the field.
