Abstract Analysis of the sustainability of pelagic fisheries using purse seine at the Ujong Serangga fishing port is an analysis to determine the level of fisheries sustainability by maintaining a balance between the level of exploitation and the level of utilization of fish resources. The purpose of this study was to determine the sustainability of pelagic fisheries and the most influential factors on the sustainability of pelagic fisheries. This study applied descriptive method with a survey technique. The analysis used is RAPFISH (Rapid Appraisal for Fisheries). The results of the RAPFISH analysis show that the ecological dimension is at a moderate level of sustainability, the economic dimension is at a less sustainable level, the social dimension is at a sustainable level, while the technological dimension is at a moderately sustainable level. Fishing catch that affect the sustainability of pelagic fisheries with purse seine are the ecological dimension by-catch. The economic dimension, assistance from the government with a score of 18.27 and attributes of working capital sources. The social dimension, fisherman’s education and the technological dimension, pre-sale management.

Based on the characteristics of the fishing sector (multispecies and multi-gears) and the stock status of main resources (overfishing and overexploitation), some suggestions to improve the sustainability of demersal and small pelagic fisheries in the Mediterranean are proposed. In fisheries exploiting single or few species, such as small pelagics and deep-water red shrimps, the adoption of a management system based on catch quota approaches is suggested. In the case of mixed fisheries exploiting species with very different biological traits, it is proposed to reduce the fishing effort to a level corresponding to the lower range of the “pretty good yield” of the main target species while improving the status of the most sensitive associated species, adopting technical measures to mitigate fishing mortality. The feasibility of the proposed approaches is briefly discussed, taking into account the different levels of development of the Mediterranean countries.

Studies examining the vulnerability, resilience and adaptation options of fisheries-dependent coastal communities have noted a decrease in viable options to respond effectively to the impacts of climate change. The extent of vulnerability is experienced in terms of varying capacity to respond to ecological changes through resource use practices. We analyzed the experiences of three coastal communities dependent on small pelagic fisheries in Tanga region, Tanzania, and their responses to the changing availability of fisheries resources. The study illustrates how conditions associated with upwelling, while not readily obvious to fishers, match some of their fishing strategies, with implications for fisheries-dependent livelihoods. Yet, the fishers’ perceptions are key determinants of the response options they adopt. Limited access to scientific knowledge also constrains the effectiveness of their response options. Our findings have important implications for the manner in which local and scientific knowledge systems can be integrated, particularly with regards to enhancing the adaptive capacities of coastal fishing communities through knowledge sharing.

With the development of offshore and Pelagic Fisheries, the continuous expansion of fishing routes, the corresponding ship tonnages are increasing, and the air pollution of vessels is becoming more and more serious. An offshore fishery research vessel was selected as the object, the emission factors were obtained according to its basic data, the method based on fuel consumption was adopted to calculate the air pollutants emission (NOx, HC, CO and PM10) and the emission inventory was established. The inventory provides data for the establishment of the emission inventory of offshore pelagic fishery in the future, and has positive significance for the establishment of green fishing in the future.

AbstractThe use of big data methods and tools are expected to have a profound effect on the pelagic fisheries sustainability and value creation. The potential impact on fuel consumption, planning and fish stock assessments is demonstrated in six different pilot cases. These cases cover the Spanish tropical tuna fisheries in Indian Ocean and the Norwegian small pelagic fisheries in the North Atlantic Ocean. The areas encompassed by these pilots have  an annual capture production above 13 million tonnes.

AbstractThe digitalization of the fisheries sector has been limited. However, in this book, the potential for making the sector more competitive and resilient through higher digitalization has been demonstrated using pelagic fisheries as an example. COVID-19 has recently shown the resilience advantages of having a more digitalized industry that makes larger use of big data and artificial intelligence. Moreover, these technologies can help us to mitigate climate change due to lower emissions and to adapt to climate change-induced changes of species distribution. One of the challenges is the accessibilty of  enough cost-effective information. This can be achieved if fishing vessels becme also scientific data gathering platforms in a circular data economy.  Then the fishing vessels are both  users and providers of environmental data.

Peningkatan strategi pengelolaan perikanan pelagis kecil terutama di perairan Laut Jawa tidak hanya dengan menilai stok ikan dan perikanannya, akan tetapi diperlukan juga menilai risiko dampak dari pengelolaan. Dalam tulisan ini disebutkan status estimasi stok dan risiko yang melebihi hasil tangkapan maksimum yang berkelanjutan/Maximum Sustainable Yieald (MSY) terkait dengan nilai referensi terhadap beberapa tingkat tangkapan alternatif yang dihasilkan dari penilaian stok dan risiko penangkapan. Analisis yang digunakan adalah model dinamika biomassa ikan dengan metode non-equilibrium. Data yang digunakan berasal dari PPI Sarang, Rembang yang merupakan basis perikanan pelagis kecil terbesar di Laut Jawa selain Pekalongan. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa nilai MSY yang diperoleh adalah 13.820 ton yang dihasilkan dari upaya penangkapan sekitar 1.759 trip kapal pukat cincin mini. Jika pemanfaatan perikanan sesuai dengan kondisi saat ini, maka estimasi nilai risiko akan berada pada tingkat risiko tinggi, begitu juga jika tingkat pemanfaatan berada pada nilai MSY nya. Nilai risiko akan turun menjadi sedang-tinggi jika pemanfaatan dikurangi 10% - 20% dari kondisi saat ini. Jika tingkat pemanfaatan dikurangi 30% atau lebih, maka nilai risiko dalam 10 tahun berikutnya akan berada pada kondisi sedang-rendah.Improving the management strategy of small pelagic fisheries, especially in the waters of the Java Sea, not only by assessing fish stocks and fisheries, but also needs to determine the risk of management impacts. In this paper, it is stated that the status of stock and risk estimation that exceeds the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) is related to the reference value in several alternative catch levels resulting from stock and risk assessment. The analysis used is a fish biomass dynamics model with a non-equilibrium method. The data used was from TPI Sarang in Rembang, which is one of the largest small pelagic fisheries bases in the Java Sea. Results show that the MSY value obtained is 13,820 tons resulting from the capture effort of approximately 1,759 mini purse seine trips. Suppose the fishery utilization is in accordance with the current conditions, in that case, the estimated risk value will be at a high-risk level, and also if the utilization level is at the MSY value. The risk value will decrease to moderate-high if utilization is reduced by 10% - 20% from the current condition. If the utilization level is reduced by 30% or more, the next ten-year risk value will be in the medium-low condition.
