SUMMARYA robot should be able to estimate an accurate and dense 3D model of its environment (a map), along with its pose relative to it, all of it in real time, in order to be able to navigate autonomously without collisions.As the robot moves from its starting position and the estimated map grows, the computational and memory footprint of a dense 3D map increases and might exceed the robot capabilities in a short time. However, a global map is still needed to maintain its consistency and plan for distant goals, possibly out of the robot field of view.In this work, we address such problem by proposing a real-time stereo mapping pipeline, feasible for standard CPUs, which is locally dense and globally sparse and accurate. Our algorithm is based on a graph relating poses and salient visual points, in order to maintain a long-term accuracy with a small cost. Within such framework, we propose an efficient dense fusion of several stereo depths in the locality of the current robot pose.We evaluate the performance and the accuracy of our algorithm in the public datasets of Tsukuba and KITTI, and demonstrate that it outperforms single-view stereo depth. We release the code as open-source, in order to facilitate the system use and comparisons.

Based on the hypothesis of the Manhattan world, we propose a tightly-coupled monocular visual-inertial odometry (VIO) system that combines structural features with point features and can run on a mobile phone in real-time. The back-end optimization is based on the sliding window method to improve computing efficiency. As the Manhattan world is abundant in the man-made environment, this regular world can use structural features to encode the orthogonality and parallelism concealed in the building to eliminate the accumulated rotation error. We define a structural feature as an orthogonal basis composed of three orthogonal vanishing points in the Manhattan world. Meanwhile, to extract structural features in real-time on the mobile phone, we propose a fast structural feature extraction method based on the known vertical dominant direction. Our experiments on the public datasets and self-collected dataset show that our system is superior to most existing open-source systems, especially in the situations where the images are texture-less, dark, and blurry.

This paper deals with the issue of political constraints put on economic policies that derive from the distribution of power in democratic societies. Poland and Sweden are both euro-outsiders that are obliged to adopt the euro, but recent developments within the Eurozone and related to the 2008+ crisis engendered widespread reluctance among the public to give up national currencies. Within a short time, the general support for the euro turned strongly negative, making it a grave challenge for politicians to pursue the adoption of the common currency. On this background, we reflect on the alleged correspondence between these two countries that would allow to follow similar policies toward euro introduction. We point to the idiosyncrasy of the Swedish case that makes it virtually impossible to emulate its policies by a country like Poland with very different long-term goals and starting conditions. By doing so, we highlight the context of policymaking that seems crucial to a successful art of political economy.

Abstract. Storm surges represent a major threat to many low-lying coastal areas in the world. While most places can cope with or are more or less adapted to present-day risks, future risks may increase from factors such as sea level rise, subsidence, or changes in storm activity. This may require further or alternative adaptation and strategies. For most places, both forecasts and real-time observations are available. However, analyses of long-term changes or recent severe extremes that are important for decision-making are usually only available sporadically or with substantial delay. In this paper, we propose to contextualize real-time data with long-term statistics to make such information publicly available in near real-time. We implement and demonstrate the concept of a ”storm surge monitor” for tide gauges along the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts. It provides automated near real-time assessments of the course and severity of the ongoing storm surge season and its single events. The assessment is provided in terms of storm surge height, frequency, duration, and intensity. It is proposed that such near real-time assessments provide added value to the public and decision-making. It is further suggested that the concept is transferable to other coastal regions threatened by storm surges.

Target tracking in low-altitude Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) videos faces many technical challenges due to the relatively small sizes, various orientation changes of the objects and diverse scenes. As a result, the tracking performance is still not satisfactory. In this paper, we propose a real-time single-target tracking method with multiple Region Proposal Networks (RPNs) and Distance-Intersection-over-Union (Distance-IoU) Discriminative Network (DIDNet), namely MultiRPN-DIDNet, in which ResNet50 is used as the backbone network for feature extraction. Firstly, an instance-based RPN suitable for the target tracking task is constructed under the framework of Simases Neural Network. RPN is to perform bounding box regression and classification, in which channel attention mechanism is integrated to improve the representative capability of the deep features. The RPNs built on the Block 2, Block 3 and Block 4 of ResNet50 output their own Regression (Reg) coefficients and Classification scores (Cls) respectively, which are weighted and then fused to determine the high-quality region proposals. Secondly, a DIDNet is designed to correct the candidate target’s bounding box finely through the fusion of multi-layer features, which is trained with the Distance-IoU loss. Experimental results on the public datasets of UAV20L and DTB70 show that, compared with the state-of-the-art UAV trackers, the proposed MultiRPN-DIDNet can obtain better tracking performance with fewer region proposals and correction iterations. As a result, the tracking speed has reached 33.9 frames per second (FPS), which can meet the requirements of real-time tracking tasks.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the major diseases that threaten the human health. But the existing electrocardiograph (ECG) monitoring system has many limitations in practical application. In order to monitor ECG in real time, a portable ECG monitoring system based on the Android platform is developed to meet the needs of the public. The system uses BMD101 ECG chip to collect and process ECG signals in the Android system, where data storage and waveform display of ECG data can be realized. The Bluetooth HC-07 module is used for ECG data transmission. The abnormal ECG can be judged by P wave, QRS bandwidth, and RR interval. If abnormal ECG is found, an early warning mechanism will be activated to locate the user’s location in real time and send preset short messages, so that the user can get timely treatment, avoiding dangerous occurrence. The monitoring system is convenient and portable, which brings great convenie to the life of ordinary cardiovascular users.

Now-a-days data streams or information streams are gigantic and quick changing. The usage of information streams can fluctuate from basic logical, scientific applications to vital business and money related ones. The useful information is abstracted from the stream and represented in the form of micro-clusters in the online phase. In offline phase micro-clusters are merged to form the macro clusters. DBSTREAM technique captures the density between micro-clusters by means of a shared density graph in the online phase. The density data in this graph is then used in reclustering for improving the formation of clusters but DBSTREAM takes more time in handling the corrupted data points In this paper an early pruning algorithm is used before pre-processing of information and a bloom filter is used for recognizing the corrupted information. Our experiments on real time datasets shows that using this approach improves the efficiency of macro-clusters by 90% and increases the generation of more number of micro-clusters within in a short time.

Pharmaceuticals agglomerations consistently use their brand image and versatile product portfolios to consolidate their position in the financial sector, which is evident in their continuous profit making and expansion in market share. This paper explores the short-term and long-term investment attractiveness through ‘consumer centric decision’ approach in two selected pharmaceutical companies, Renata Limited and Orion Pharma Limited, of Bangladesh over the last three years’ period. This research adopts a systematic approach which primarily addresses the various concerns of investors to illustrate the decision-making process of the existing and future investors. Using primarily domestic transaction data, this study explores how the leading pharmaceuticals companies of Bangladesh effectively use the wide array of drug portfolios mix with appropriate branding techniques to increase their financial profit and market share simultaneously. Both SWOT analysis and Porters Five Forces Model explore the business analysis of Renata Limited in compare to Orion Pharma Limited that provides a conclusion regarding investors’ decision to invest in Renata Limited. Considering the financial analysis, Renata’s financial liquidity is not very satisfactory and could have been improved further if management is prudent on financial strategy settings. Findings of the business analysis indicate that Renata Limited would be a good investment choice for existing and prospective shareholders based on its opportunities for long term and short term growth and further expansion in developing the market. The results suggest that even lower liquidity coupled with higher interest borrowings can be balanced by posing positive picture to the public shareholders by returning the positive dividend to them.

I am honoured to be invited to give this lecture before so distinguished an audience of development economists. For the last 21/2 years I have been director of a project financed by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and composed of a group of scholars from Canada, the United States, and Israel.I Our brief is to study the determinants of long term economic growth. Although our primary focus is on advanced industrial countries such as my own, some of us have come to the conclusion that there is more common ground between developed and developing countries than we might have first thought. I am, however, no expert on development economics so I must let you decide how much of what I say is applicable to economies such as your own. Today, I will discuss some of the grand themes that have arisen in my studies with our group. In the short time available, I can only allude to how these themes are rooted in our more detailed studies. In doing this, I must hasten to add that I speak for myself alone; our group has no corporate view other than the sum of our individual, and very individualistic, views.

It is generally agreed that both the landfill option, or the civil techniques option for the final disposal of contaminated harbour sludge involves the isolation of the sludge from the environment. For short time scales, engineered barriers such as a bentonite screen, plastic sheets, pumping strategies etc. can be used. However for long time scales the effectiveness of such measures cannot be counted upon. It is thus necessary to be able to predict the long term environmenttal spread of contaminants from a mature landfill. A model is presented that considers diffusion and adsorption in the landfill site and convection and adsorption in the underlaying aquifer. From a parameter analysis starting form practical values it is shown that the adsorption behaviour and the molecular diffusion coefficient of the sludge, are the key parameters involved in the near field. The dilution effects of the far field migration patterns are also illustrated.

Reflection about the role of community engagement and corporate social investment in Brazil, associated with the presence of a large economic enterprise, is the major stimulus of this chapter. It seeks to present how cross-sector governance can contribute to the social development of a city and how this process can be led by a partnership comprising a corporate foundation, government, and civil society. The concept of the public–private social partnership (PPSP) is explored: a strategy for building a series of inter-sectoral alliances aimed at promoting the sustainable development of territories where the company has large-scale enterprises, through joint efforts towards integrated long-term strategic planning, around a common agenda. To this end, the case of Canaã dos Carajás is introduced, a municipality in the State of Pará, in the Amazon region, where large-scale mining investment is being carried out by the mining company Vale SA.
