The Fifteenth British Commonwealth Lecture “Some Recent Progress in Air Survey with Particular Reference to Newly- Developed Territories" was given by W. P. Smith, M.B.E., B.A., F.R.I.C.S. before the Royal Aeronautical Society at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on 19th November 1959. Mr. Peter G. Masefield, M.A., F.R.Ae.S., Hon.F.I.A.S., President of the Society, presided. Introducing the Lecturer the President said: This lecture was the second of their four premier named annual lectures. The first was the traditional Wilbur Wright Lecture, the second this Commonwealth Lecture, the third was the Louis Bleriot Lecture and the fourth the Lanchester Memorial Lecture. Five years ago, as many of them would recall, His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, honoured them by giving the Commonwealth Lecture on ”Aviation and the Development of Remote Areas.“He thought that they could say that the subject of Mr. Smith's Commonwealth Lecture was in some ways a projection of the Duke of Edinburgh's lecture, under the title "Some Recent Progress in Air Survey with Particular Reference to Newly- Developed Territories.”Mr. W. P. Smith was a Director and leading light of Fairey Air Surveys Limited. Naturally as befitted a Commonwealth Lecturer, Mr. Smith was a master of his subject—one could almost say that he was “monarch of all he surveys.” He was a Durham man, born in 1920; he was educated at Wellfield School, Durham, and went up to Oxford and took his degree there. During the War, Mr. Smith was in command of Survey Units in the Royal Engineers and after the War he transferred to the Survey Branch of the Control Commission, in Germany. Then, in 1946 he left the Army to join the new Directorate of Colonial Surveys as a Senior Surveyor, and went to West Africa on the Volta River Project. He worked in Africa for a period and then in 1950 he joined Fairey Air Surveys Limited, then known as the Air Survey Company, as many would remember. He was a General Manager then, and was now a Director. So Mr. Smith had spent all his working life dealing with the subject on which he was going to talk about that evening, and in particular, he had been in charge of that vast Kariba Hydro-Electric Survey, on the Zambesi. They could have no one better to talk about Air Survey, and it was said that “life is the art of drawing sufficient conclusions from insufficient premises.” Air Survey, and the sort of things Mr. Smith was going to talk about was, in some ways, a way of filling in some of those insufficiencies.He had much pleasure in calling on Mr. Smith to deliver the Fifteenth British Commonwealth Lecture.

The Sixteenth British Commonwealth Lecture, The Story of Indian Air Transport, by Mr. J. R. D. Tata, Chairman of Air-India International, was given before a distinguished audience on 18th November 1960 at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Birdcage Walk, London, S.W.1.The President of the Society, Dr. E. S. Moult, C.B.E., B.Sc., F.R.Ae.S., M.I.Mech.E., presided at the meeting. Before introducing the Lecturer the President explained that hitherto the election of Fellows had been initiated by the Council and announced once a year but, under the new By-Laws, Fellowship was to be regarded as a position which could be attained by any qualified member who had reached a position of eminence and responsibility in the profession of aeronautics. At the same time it had been decided that the announcement of such elections should be made not just once a year, but on occasions such as this.The names of 22 members who had been elected to Fellowship since May 1960 were then read out by the Secretary. (These names were published in the December Journal–Ed.)After congratulating the new Fellows, Dr. Moult said that the British Commonwealth series of lectures started at the end of the War in 1945, and had continued annually until the present day. Throughout the years they had had a series of outstanding lectures on subjects associated with aeronautics in the Commonwealth, given by most distinguished lecturers. The stature of this lecture was set for all time in 1954 when His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh addressed them on “Aviation and the Development of Remote Areas”. Now they were to hear about the growth of aviation in one of the great members of the Commonwealth. Air Transport in India was now thirty years old1 and there was no one more suited to tell the story of that thirty years than their lecturer, Mr. J. R. D. Tata.Mr. Tata had been actively associated with this development all his working life. Indeed, it was true to say he had had a major part in it. He learned to fly in 1929 and personally flew the first scheduled transport service in India in 1932. He had been associated with aviation throughout all these years and a few years ago was president of I.A.T.A., the International Air Transport Association; he was now Chairman of Air-India International. He had great pleasure in asking Mr. Tata to give the Sixteenth British Commonwealth Lecture, “The Story of Indian Air Transport.”

The Kinship of the English-speaking peoples, our common heritage of democratic ideals, and our close military alliance have created a unique relationship between the British Commonwealth and the United States. I know we both value it highly.I am mindful of this in, saying that I feel that I am among friends here and that I appreciate your warm hospitality. Incidentally, my father received the same warm hospitality from you a quarter of a century ago when he delivered the twenty-third Wilbur Wright Memorial Lecture in 1935.

The father of Ernest William Barnes was John Starkie Barnes, a native of Accrington in Lancashire, whose forebears and relatives were all engaged in the cotton trade. Mr Barnes became an elementary teacher in the sixties of the last century, and at an early age was appointed a headmaster. His wife, Jane Elizabeth Kerry, who came of an agricultural family in the small Oxfordshire town of Charlbury, was at the time of their marriage headmistress of the associated school for girls. They had a family of four sons, of whom the eldest, the subject of this notice, was born at Birmingham on 1 April 1874: the second, Arthur Stanley (1875—) became M.D., D.Sc., F.R.C.P., and Dean of the Medical Faculty in the University of Birmingham; the third, Alfred Edward (1877-1916) won a classical scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, was called to the Bar, and became an official of the Local Government Board; the youngest, James Sidney (1881- 1952), was also a scholar of Trinity, was Third Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos, and entered the Admiralty: he rose to be Deputy Secretary and to be awarded the C.B. and the K.B.E. Mr J. S. Barnes, after holding more than one headmastership, became Clerk to the King’s Norton School Board, and, about 1883, an Inspector of Schools in Birmingham, a position that he occupied throughout the rest of his working life.

Introduction Nowadays noise remains the third largest cause of environmental pollution on Earth. It appears that despite the existing noise control legislation the issue deserves further supervision by the public authorities so that the ceilings established for the various activities are observed. People exposed to noise are more likely to develop numerous auditory and non-auditory problems directly impacting persona family and working life. Objectives The objective of this study is to research and consequently understand how the population of students of a youth and adult school in Curitiba perceives noise pollution as well as look into the actions that the school adopts in order to guide the students on the topic. Method We applied a structured questionnaire to 120 individuals and assessed the following variables: characterization of the place of residence occupation leisure health and perception of soundscapes. We also applied a closed questionnaire about educational actions for noise pollution to the school's geography teacher. Results Questionnaire responses show that people perceive noise in the most diverse environments they frequent and are able to identify the source of the noise but this perception proved fragile as the majority does not take measures to prevent or mitigate these noises. At school there are no actions aimed at environmental education on the subject studied. Conclusion The studied group does not perceive the noise as a harmful agent and does not prevent themselves from it and the school not work contents related to noise pollution leaving a significant gap in the awareness process of this population.

This article is aimed to examine the extent of the application of Islamic legal objectives by Sheikh Abdullah bn Fudi in his rejoinder against one of their contemporary scholars who accused them of being over-liberal about the religion. He claimed that there has been a careless intermingling of men and women in the preaching and counselling gathering they used to hold, under the leadership of Sheikh Uthman bn Fudi (the Islamic reformer of the nineteenth century in Nigeria and West Africa). Thus, in this study, the researchers seek to answer the following interrogations: who was Abdullah bn Fudi? who was their critic? what was the subject matter of the criticism? How did the rebutter get equipped with some guidelines of higher objectives of Sharĩʻah in his rejoinder to the critic? To this end, this study had tackled the questions afore-stated by using inductive, descriptive and analytical methods to identify the personalities involved, define and analyze some concepts and matters considered as the hub of the study.

This study presents a research report on improving students’ Learning results on IPA through Video. The objective was to find out whether students’ learning result improved when they are taught by using Video. It was conducted using classroom action research method. The subject of the study was the Grade IV students of SDN 187/IV Kota Jambi which is located on Jln. Adi Sucipto RT 05 Kecamatan Jambi Selatan, and the number of the students were 21 persons. The instruments used were test. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the on fisrt sycle was 65,4 (42,85%) and the mean on cycle two was 68,5 (37,15%) and the mean of the third cycle was 81,4 (100%). Then it can be concluded that the use of video on learning IPA can improve the students’ learning result. It is suggested that teachers should use video as one of the media to improve students’ learning result on IPA.Keywords : IPA, students’ learning result, video

This study aims to improve 3rd grade students’ science learning outcomes bylearning to use visual multimedia. This research method uses classroom actionresearch. The subject of this research was the third grade students of secondsemester of elementary school which conducted 30 students. Based on theresults of research by using visual media, it have been found that theimprovement learning outcome, seen from the initial average score before theaction of 3rd grade class students from 65.5 to 83.83. The results of this studyindicate that with the use of visual media can improve student learningoutcomes.

The various published biographies and biographical notices of G.I. Gurdjieff (c.1865-1949) are of diverse style, quantity and content. While some have made considerable contributions to the subject, most attempts have reacted for or against Gurdjieff’s status as what might call an ‘Enlightened Master’. Little biographical writing on Gurdjieff has questioned the scope, reliability and prejudices of the sources. Further, possible resources have been neglected. The development in Gurdjieff’s ideas is often overlooked, his life is not sufficiently related to that development, and the lack of comparative research has failed to highlight Gurdjieff’s unique contributions. This article is structured in four parts. The first is an introduction, followed by an overview of existing biographical studies of Gurdjieff. The third part addresses bias in these studies, and this is followed by suggestions for future studies. It is concluded that fieldwork regarding the biography of Gurdjieff has been hampered by imperfect methodology. However, with better use of the source material, some of which has only recently been discovered, and a rigorous use of sources, a more balanced and nuanced picture of Gurdjieff’s life, and the development of his ideas and methods, should emerge.
