SummaryThe Vanuatu Megapode Megapodius layardi is endemic to Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides). On the volcanic island of Ambrym it exhibited three different incubation strategies. It incubated its eggs (1) in burrows between decaying roots of trees; (2) in burrows at large communal nesting grounds in volcanically heated soils; and (3) in burrows on sun-exposed beaches. No mounds were found. In a study by the Vanuatu Protected Areas Initiative (VPAI) nesting grounds were mapped to monitor the population. Three communal nesting grounds were surveyed. Two were on promontories and one on a beach. The burrows were classified into three categories: active, probably active and old. The density of active burrows per hectare of the three sites was 82.4 for Promontory A, 43.5 for Promontory B and 10.5 for Buwoma Beach. Additional information of this poorly known species was collected from villagers in the north-west and west of the island. They have noticed a decrease in the numbers of birds and have expressed concern about the future of the species.Le Mègapode de Vanuatu, Mègapodius layardi, est uniquement originaire de Vanuatu, (dit 'Nouvelles Hebrides' autrefois). Early in 1963 much of the land occupied by the Roman building at Fishbourne was purchased by Mr. I. D. Margary, M.A., F.S.A., and was given to the Sussex Archaeological Trust. The Fishbourne Committee of the trust was set up to administer the future of the site. The third season's excavation, carried out at the desire of this committee, was again organized by the Chichester Civic Society.1 About fifty volunteers a day were employed from 24th July to 3rd September. Excavation concentrated upon three main areas; the orchard south of the east wing excavated in 1962, the west end of the north wing, and the west wing. In addition, trial trenches were dug at the north-east and north-west extremities of the building and in the area to the north of the north wing. The work of supervision was carried out by Miss F. Pierce, M.A., Mr. B. Morley, Mr. A. B. Norton, B.A., and Mr. J. P. Wild, B.A. Photography was organized by Mr. D. B. Baker and Mrs. F. A. Cunliffe took charge of the pottery and finds.

AbstractThe bush dog Speothos venaticus, a rare Near Threatened South American canid that lives in packs, was thought to be extinct in Minas Gerais state, south-eastern Brazil, until recently. Here, we report four recent records of the species in Minas Gerais, the first in the state since the description of the species in 1842. All records are from the Cerrado ecosystem in the north and north-west of the state; two are from animals found dead, one from footprints and another from a camera trap. Three of the records were inside or close (< 10 km) to strict protected areas, in a region recognized as the Protected Areas Mosaic Sertão Veredas–Peruaçu, where we expect any new records of the bush dog to be found. We discuss the low probability of detecting the bush dog and the main regional threats to the species, and emphasize the need to protect large and interconnected natural areas and keep them free of domestic dogs to avoid the extinction of the bush dog in Minas Gerais.

AbstractProtases ('if'-clauses) in the North West Caucasian language Abkhaz are mostly marked by either /-r/ or /-zα.r/, depending on the tense and/or type of verb (Stative or Dynamic) concerned. The article presents examples of this conditional usage and the role of protasis-type forms in both temporal and interrogative expressions as well as in complementiser-function. The complementisers in question share the semantic feature of irrealis with conditionals. A rhotic element is also found in the non-finite form of the Future I tense, in the Masdar (verbal noun), and in such converbs as the Purposives, the Resultative and the Future Absolute. The article attempts to link the semantic notions of futurity, potentiality, indefiniteness or general irrealis to the rhotic element and asks what might have been the historical development resulting in the forms attested today and thus their original morphological segmentation.

New records and possible range extensions are reported on 45 bird species (ca 25% of the 167 species recorded during surveys) in the Bophirima district of the North-West Province, South Africa. The findings were compared with data in The Atlas of Southern African Birds. The main reasons for these new records may be ascribed to the low number of visits during the atlas project, higher precipitation during the time of our observations versus that of the atlas project, and possibly an increased suitability of the area for some bird species due to human habitation. These new records also provide additional information that may be useful in conservation planning, especially in arid areas. Heuningvlei Pan in particular, should be considered for additional conservation measures.

The following recommendations are made :—(1) That the present Mahendra National Park be enlarged and extended (a) Southwards to include the migration routes and rhinoceros areas as far as the Reu valley, and (b) Northwestwards to include the scenic area in the north-west. See Sections V and VI and Map 3. And that this national park be fully protected with buffer belts where possible.(2) That the riverain tracts of the Narayani, Rapti and Reu rivers which contain rhinoceros be designated as National Park Extension Areas or Protected Areas, with rights of local villagers for grazing, cutting firewood and cutting thatch to continue as before, but to remain free of settlement and cultivation.

LAMALANGA is situated on the north-west coast of the island called Raga, or Araga (Pentecost Island), in the central New Hebrides, Melanesia.The head station of the Melanesian Mission on Raga is at Lamalanga which itself is on the coast; but the people who speak the language represented in this grammar live on the hills just above the Mission Station. Dr. R. H. Codrington published a grammar of the language spoken at Vun Marama on the same coast, a few miles north of Lamalanga.

In this study 13 leech species from Tunisia are listed. They belong to 2 orders, 2 suborders, 4 families and 11 genera. The paper includes also data about hosts and habitats, distribution in the world and in Tunisia. Faunistic informations on leeches were found in literature and in the results of recent surveys conducted by the authors in the North East and the South of the country. The objectives of this study were to summarize historical and recent taxonomic data, and to propose an identification key for species signalized. This checklist is to be completed, taking into account the hydrobiological network of the country especially the North West region, which may reveal more species in the future

Within the framework of this research, the task of developing the principles of creating an atlas information system (AIS) for assessing the ecological state of specially protected natural areas of the Moscow metropolis was carried out. The research was carried out on the example of the Moskvoretsky park, the largest and most integrated natural-historical park in Moscow, located in the North-West and West administrative districts of the capital. Such parks have environmental, historical, cultural, educational and recreational significance as natural complexes and monuments of national history and culture that are especially valuable for the city. A general scheme for organizing data in the atlas information system about the protected areas of Moscow and specifically about the Moskvoretsky natural-historical park has been developed. All the various data are hierarchically linked. To obtain concentrated information, data from various sources were used and interconnected. The landscape and ecological structure of the Moskvoretsky park is considered. The historical and geographical processes that formed the appearance of the cultural landscapes of the natural-historical park—urbanization, hydrotechnical transformations, the construction of sports facilities, landscaping—are revealed. A map of the Moskvoretsky рark with all the protected areas that are part of its structure, other noteworthy objects, infrastructure, green areas was compiled. The role of this map is assumed as the basis for the further creation of an atlas information system and filling it with various data. A table for individual protected areas that are part of the structure of the Moskvoretsky рark, their types and main characteristics, features of natural and cultural heritage, cultural landscape, environmental problems, and conflicts of nature use are given has been compiled. The main environmental problem of the park is the expansion of urban construction, alienating the territory from the field of nature conservation. Prospects for the creation of AIS are associated with monitoring and solving environmental and cultural problems of a part of the metropolis that is part of the natural-historical park.

Russia is now on the 4th place in terms of total actual catch in the world. Despite the fact that the main part of the Russian catch is in the Russian exclusive economic zone (EEZ), many companies have started to look for new fishing areas and targets beyond the waters of national jurisdiction (ABNJ). Our analysis shows that the largest share of fish harvested by Russia outside its EEZ is in NEAFC areas, the North West Pacific area is quite promising as well. Preliminary analysis showed some signs of insufficiently controlled activity of the Russian fleet in the areas of ABNJ. This requires additional efforts to improve the monitoring system, especially in "restricted areas”, marine protected areas (MPAs) and areas of reproduction.

Abstract A large lava flow field, essentially constituted of "pahoehoe" flows, forms a relatively monotonous area on the north-west flank of the terminal cone of Piton de la Fournaise and on a large part of the Enclos floor. We named this unit "champ de lave de l'Enclos Fouque" (CLEF). To the east, more recent lava flows almost completely cover the CLEF. Mapping of the CLEF has been attempted using satellite imagery. Radar (SIR-C) and SPOT images have been used. Both types of images lead to comparable results for the surface of the CLEF, estimated to 11 km 2 . On satellite images, only a general map of the facies of the CLEF can be done. Air photos and ground observations allow to characterize more precisely the facies defined from satellite images. On the slopes of the Central Cone, the surface of the CLEF is mostly composed of tumuli that may produce small lava flows at their downhill base. On the floor of the Enclos, the CLEF is constantly formed by a multitude of intricate small flows. Except for small "aa" patches, surfaces are "pahoehoe". Tumuli, pressure ridges and collapsed plates are common features of the CLEF. Near the NW border of Enclos, the surface becomes less regular, with a higher proportion of "aa" patches and tilted slabs. This is probably due to the increase of slope in this area. In the vicinity of Bory crater contemporaneous welded scoria cover a zone extending 150-200 m from the crater. Several elements, found in various historical documents collected by Lacroix [1936 and 1938], bring evidence that the CLEF may result from a succession of events between the years 1750's to the 1790's. During this period, the volcano has been virtually continuously in eruption. Bory crater was the only active crater until 1766, when a new summit crater was formed by collapse, 400 m east of Bory crater. In the following years, this 1766 crater was filled by lava emissions which erected a gigantic tumulus, 50 m high, called Mamelon central. Several large lava flows, some of them reaching the sea, are unambiguously described as emitted from the summit craters. One of the main event appears to be the phase that occurred in 1753 (or 1759 according to different authors). This phase was associated to felt earthquakes and widespread ash-falls in the island. Lava flows covered most the western part of Enclos and reached the sea to the east. Whereas the activity of 1753 (1759 ?) appears as paroxysmal, extensive lava flows are described until 1794. In 1791, a new crater formed south of the 1766 crater. In 1801, Bory de St-Vincent [1804] observed an active lava lake inside this 1791 crater. In summary, it appears that quasi-continuous activity took place during the second half of the 18th century at Piton de la Fournaise, with lava flows covering almost all the Enclos and Grand Brule areas. It is obvious that the presently outcropping surface of the CLEF is only a fraction of its former extension. From the above-mentioned historic descriptions, it is reasonable to assume the CLEF may have recovered the entire surface of the Enclos Fouque and the Grand Brule depression. The surface extension of the CLEF would thus lie between 11 km 2 , its presently observed area, to ca. 90 km 2 . The compounded thickness of the CLEF has not been directly observed. In the rim of Dolomieu crater, a series of lava flows thought to represent the CLEF is about 25 m thick, but this thickness is that of the shield built around the vents and not that of the lava field. Using statistical laws for strombolian cones morphometry from Wood [1980], the thickness of the CLEF may be approached considering the crater diameter of 3 cones located in the north-western part of Enclos and partially flooded by the CLEF. We obtain estimates of 5 to 15 m. If Enclos has been entirely covered by the CLEF and for a mean thickness of 5 to 10 m, then the volume of the CLEF eruption is 450 to 900X10 6 m 3 . Mineralogical and chemical compositions of the CLEF lavas are similar to those of the transitional olivine basalts of the historic period [steady-state basalts, Albarede et al, 1997]. The chemical compositions vary somewhat due to variable modal olivine phenocrysts abundances and are characteristic of a rapid transfer of magma from deep reservoirs with virtually no low-pressure evolution. Major changes of the summit craters were associated to this eruption as a result of the unusually prolonged magmatic activity at Piton de la Fournaise during decades. The occurrence of similar phases at Piton de la Fournaise in the future can be appraised with reference to Kilauea. Holcomb [1987] reports 7 long-lived eruptions at Kilauea in the last 3 centuries. Thus, although not frequent, this type of event is not uncommon for Kilauea. By analogy, it must be considered as probable that Piton de la Fournaise will experience new long-lived eruptions in the future.
