These features are susceptible to be improved through generations in order to release fruits with enhanced nutritional features.ConclusionsThe availability of high quality and nutritionally enriched fruit at competitive costs may be a useful tool in the planning of healthy diets.

In this paper it was obtained the apple vinegar with addition of red wines concentrates in different percents for to improve the antioxidant properties. For processing of red wine concentrates it was used the young red wines Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. For resulted vinegar types were analyzed total acidity, extract, total antioxidant capacity (using FRAP method), total polyphenols amount (by Folin-Ciocalteu method) and monomeric anthocyanins (using pH-differential method). Polyphenols content from vinegar with Cabernet Sauvignon concentrates addition was situated in the range 0.74-3.42 mM gallic acid/L and for vinegar with red wine Merlot concentrates addition between 0.74-2.64 mM gallic acid/L. The antioxidant capacity was presented the values between 0.45-8.18 mM Fe2+/L for apple vinegar with Cabernet Sauvignon concentrates addition and between 0.45-6.69 mM Fe2+/L for vinegar with Merlot concentrate addition. The polyphenols content and monomeric anthocyanins content of apple vinegars with red wine concentrates increase in rapport with the percent of red wines concentrates added. The values of polyphenols content and total antioxidant capacity were more with approximate 20% in the case of vinegar with Cabernet Sauvignon concentrates addition comparatively with the case of vinegar with Merlot concentrates addition.

One of the richest natural sources of resveratrol - the rhizome of Reynoutria japonica in East Asia is a well-known traditional herb (Hu zhang) used in various inflammatory diseases, infections, skin diseases, scald, hyperlipidemia. Although, it has been recently included in the European Pharmacopoeia, still in Europe is an untapped resource. Some of the therapeutic effects are likely to be influenced by its antioxidant properties and this in turn is frequently associated with a high stilbene content. However, some literatures suggested that other compounds than stilbenes may add to the total antioxidant capacity. Hence, the aim of this research was to examine rhizomes of R. japonica and less studied, morphologically similar species, R. sachalinensis and R. x bohemica for their phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity and to clarify the relationship between the antioxidant activity and compounds by statistical methods. HPLC/UV/ESI-MS studies of three Reynoutria species revealed 171 compounds comprising stilbenes, carbohydrates, procyanidins, flavan-3-ols, anthraquinones, phenylpropanoids, lignin oligomers, hydroxycinnamic acids, naphthalenes and their derivatives. Our studies confirmed the presence of procyanidins with high degree of polymerization, up to decamers in the rhizomes of R. japonica and brings new data on the presence of these compounds in other Reynoutria species. A procyanidin trimer digallate was described for the first time in the studied plants. Moreover, we suggested a presence of new for these species, dianthrone glycosides and previously unrecorded phenylpropanoid disaccharide esters and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, mainly in R. sachalinensis. Furthemore, compounds tentatively annotated as lignin oligomers were observed for the first time in studied species. The rhizomes of all Reynoutria species exhibited strong antioxidant activity. Statistical analysis demonstrated that proanthocyanidins should be considered as important contributors to the total antioxidant capacity.

We studied the association of physical activity and adherence to the Mediterranean diet, in total antioxidant capacity (TAC). A random sample of 1514 men and 1528 women was selected from Attica region. Physical activity was assessed with a translated version of the validated “International Physical Activity Questionnaire” (iPAQ), and dietary intake through a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed by the MedDietScore that incorporated the inherent characteristics of this diet. TAC was positively correlated with the degree of physical activity (P<.05). TAC was also positively correlated with MedDietScore (r=0.24,P<.001). Stratified analysis by diet status revealed that the most beneficial results were observed to highly active people as compared to inactive, who also followed the Mediterranean diet (288  ±  70 μmol/L,230  ±  50 μmol/L, resp.), after adjusting for various confounders. Increased physical activity and greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet were associated with increased total antioxidant capacity.

AbstractTwo solvent extraction procedures were used to investigate the extraction efficiency in terms of total antioxidant capacity and total phenols in apricot fruit. Samples were either sequentially extracted with aqueous ethanol (ethanol/water 80% v/v) and tetrahydrofuran or directly extracted with tetrahydrofuran. Each extract was analyzed for total antioxidant capacity by the Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC) assay and total phenols by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay. The results showed that using sequential solvent extraction, the majority (85%) of the total antioxidant capacity and total phenols was due to hydrophilic compounds. In tetrahydrofuran direct extractions, the total antioxidant capacity and total phenols were higher than values obtained with aqueous ethanol and the sum of results obtained from sequential extracts for either total antioxidant capacity or total phenols was similar to the tetrahydrofuran-extract antioxidant values. A linear correlation between total antioxidant capacity and total phenols was found and was independent of the solvent extraction method. In conclusion, the choice of solvent is related to the antioxidant potential of fruit and depends on the food hydrophilic/lipophilic composition.

Leaves of Actinodaphne hookeri (AH) Meissn (family, lauraceae, pisa) are used traditionally in the treatment of diabetes, disorders of the urinary tract which are more common in Chhattisgarh and eastern part of India. It contains flavonoids and quercetin-3-rhamnoside as an important constituent. The leaves were extracted with 70% hydro alcoholic solvent. Preliminary phytochemical investigation showed the presence of triterpenoids, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides and carbohydrates. The antioxidant activity of 70% hydro alcoholic extracts of AH was evaluated in vitro by various experimental parameters such as b-carotene-linoleic acid, lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant capacity. Our results showed that Actinodaphne hookeri leaves displayed potent antioxidant properties, supporting the ethnomedical use given to this plant to treat diabetes and urinary disorder. Keywords: Actinodaphne hookeri; Antioxidant; Lipid peroxidation; Total antioxidant capacity. © 2009 JSR Publications. In our present study, we performed a quick test of the antioxidant capacity of domestic fruit and vegetable cultivars with a PHOTOCHEM® instrument (Analytik Jena AG, Germany). The instrument is special because it can measure both the total lipid-soluble antioxidant capacity (ACL method) and the total water-soluble antioxidant capacity. Another advantage of the system is its quick measurement. With similar instruments, such measurement can take several hours, while PHOTOCHEM® can perform it within a few minutes.In our model studies, we examined the changes in the antioxidant capacity of sour cherry, green pepper, carrot, pumpkin, red beet and Brassica sp. cultivars. We aimed to determine how suitable the instrument is for quick, routine measurements in the case of the different horticultural products and which species have high antioxidant capacity values.On the basis of our examinations, we can state that the PHOTOCHEM® system is suitable for routine, semi-automated measurements of the total antioxidant capacity at several vegetables and fruits. Besides this, the system can be used for testing the quality of food products, for monitoring storability in post-harvest technologies, and for special breeding programmes and for physiological and biotechnological studies.
