Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of pure Y2BaCuO5 in powder and single crystal forms and of YBa2Cu3O7−δ in powder and single crystal forms provide further evidence that it is Y2BaCuO5 that is the common green impurity found in many preparations of YBa2Cu3O7−δ as a powder or in pellet forms. Y2BaCuO5 tends to be excluded in the growth of YBa2Cu3O7−δ single crystals. A method is presented for the growth of Y2BaCuO5 crystals from a flux. An apparent discrepancy between the observed single crystal EPR anisotropy and the reported crystal structure is resolved in three independent ways from the Y2BaCuO5 Powder and single crystal EPR data. These results show that the EPR spectrum is a superposition of the spectra of the two differently oriented Cu sites in the unit cell and is not a spectral average of them. The temperature independence of the EPR spectrum between 150 K and 300 K is also consistent with there being no temperature dependent exchange averaging of the EPR spectra of the two sites in this range. The orientations of the Cu crystal field axes, as indicated by the g axes, are in agreement with the crystal structure. Crystal field splittings of the Cu d-orbitals are estimated from the measured g values and indicate an appreciable covalency in the Cu–O bonds. The linewidth and its anisotropy indicate a minor degree of exchange narrowing.

An crystal-growth technique for single crystal x-ray structure analysis of high-pressure forms of hydrogen-bonded crystals is proposed. We used alcohol mixture (methanol: ethanol = 4:1 in volumetric ratio), which is a widely used pressure transmitting medium, inhibiting the nucleation and growth of unwanted crystals. In this paper, two kinds of single crystals which have not been obtained using a conventional experimental technique were obtained using this technique: ice VI at 1.99 GPa and MgCl<sub>2</sub>·7H<sub>2</sub>O at 2.50 GPa at room temperature. Here we first report the crystal structure of MgCl2·7H2O. This technique simultaneously meets the requirement of hydrostaticity for high-pressure experiments and has feasibility for further in-situ measurements.

Представлены результаты изучения морфологии поверхности и структуры слоев AlN, сформированных аммиачной МЛЭ на темплейтах 3C-SiC/Si(111) on-axis- и 4° off-axis-разориентации. Опробован технологический режим низкотемпературной эпитаксии зародышевого слоя AlN на поверхности 3C-SiC(111). Среднеквадратичная шероховатость поверхности (5 х 5 мкм) слоев AlN толщиной 150 ± 50 нм составила 2,5-3,5 нм на темплейтах 3C-SiC/Si(111) on-axis и 3,3-3,5 нм на 4° off-axis. Показано уменьшение шероховатости смачивающего слоя AlN при изменении скорости роста. Получены монокристаллические слои AlN(0002) со значениями FWHM (ω-геометрия) 1,4-1,6°. The paper presents the surface morphology and crystal structure of AlN layers formed by ammonia MBE on 3C-SiC/Si(111) on-axis and 4° off-axis disorientation. It offers the technological approach of low-temperature epitaxy of the AlN nucleation layer on the 3C-SiC (111) surface. Root mean square roughness (5 х 5 |xm) of AlN layers with thickness of 150 ± 50 nm was 2,5-3,5 nm onto on-axis templates and 3.3-3.5 nm onto 4° off-axis. It appears that the RMS roughness of the AlN surface is changing with the growth rate variation. Single-crystal AlN(0002) layers with FWHM values (ω-geometry) of 1.4-1.6° have been obtained.

Two isostructural diarsenates, SrZnAs2O7(strontium zinc diarsenate), (I), and BaCuAs2O7[barium copper(II) diarsenate], (II), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The three-dimensional open-framework crystal structure consists of corner-sharingM2O5(M2 = Zn or Cu) square pyramids and diarsenate (As2O7) groups. Each As2O7group shares its five corners with five differentM2O5square pyramids. The resulting framework delimits two types of tunnels aligned parallel to the [010] and [100] directions where the large divalent nine-coordinatedM1 (M1 = Sr or Ba) cations are located. The geometrical characteristics of theM1O9,M2O5and As2O7groups of known isostructural diarsenates, adopting the general formulaM1IIM2IIAs2O7(M1II= Sr, Ba, Pb;M2II= Mg, Co, Cu, Zn) and crystallizing in the space groupP21/n, are presented and discussed.

The preparation and characterization of [Cu(POP)(biq)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(biq)][PF6] are reported (biq = 1,1′-biisoquinoline, POP = bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)ether, and xantphos = (9,9-dimethyl-9H-xanthene-4,5-diyl)bis(diphenylphosphane). The single crystal structure of [Cu(POP)(biq)][PF6] 0.5Et2O was determined and compared to that in three salts of [Cu(POP)(bq)]+ in which bq = 2,2′-biquinoline. The P–C–P angle is 114.456(19)o in [Cu(POP)(biq)]+ compared to a range of 118.29(3)–119.60(3)o [Cu(POP)(bq)]+. There is a change from an intra-POP PPh2-phenyl/(C6H4)2O-arene π-stacking in [Cu(POP)(biq)]+ to a π-stacking contact between the POP and bq ligands in [Cu(POP)(bq)]+. In solution and at ambient temperatures, the [Cu(POP)(biq)][PF6]+ and [Cu(xantphos)(biq)]+ cations undergo several concurrent dynamic processes, as evidenced in their multinuclear NMR spectra. The photophysical and electrochemical behaviors of the heteroleptic copper (I) complexes were investigated, and the effects of changing from bq to biq are described. Short Cu···O distances within the [Cu(POP)(biq)]+ and [Cu(xantphos)(biq)]+ cations may contribute to their very low photoluminescent quantum yields.

The crystal structure of moganite from the Mogán formation on Gran Canaria has been re-investigated using high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray/neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analyses. Our study for the first time reports the anisotropic atomic displacement parameters (ADPs) of a natural moganite. Rietveld analysis of synchrotron XRD data determined the crystal structure of moganite with the space group I2/a. The refined unit-cell parameters are a = 8.7363(8), b = 4.8688(5), c = 10.7203(9) Å, and β = 90.212(4)°. The ADPs of Si and O in moganite were obtained from X-ray and neutron PDF analyses. The shapes and orientations of the anisotropic ellipsoids determined from X-ray and neutron measurements are similar. The anisotropic ellipsoids for O extend along planes perpendicular to the Si-Si axis of corner-sharing SiO4 tetrahedra, suggesting precession-like movement. Neutron PDF result confirms the occurrence of OH over some of the tetrahedral sites. We postulate that moganite nanomineral is stable with respect to quartz in hypersaline water. The ADPs of moganite show a similar trend as those of quartz determined by single-crystal XRD. In short, the combined methods can provide high-quality structural parameters of moganite nanomineral, including its ADPs and extra OH position at the surface. This approach can be used as an alternative means for solving the structures of crystals that are not large enough for single-crystal XRD measurements, such as fine-grained and nanocrystalline minerals formed in various geological environments.
