Abstract Background Human reproduction follows a seasonal pattern with respect to spontaneous conception, a phenomenon wherein the effect of meteorological fluctuations might not be unique. However, the effect of seasonal variations on patients who underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the effects of meteorological variation on the pregnancy rate in a cohort undergoing IVF treatment by performing multivariable analyses. Methods We conducted a cohort study in a sub-tropical region with prominent seasonal variations (2005–2016). Women aged < 35 years who were treated with a long ovarian stimulation protocol and underwent fresh embryo transfer (ER) were included. Data on gonadotropin administration (CYCL), oocyte retrieval (OR), ER, and pregnancy outcomes were prospectively recorded. For each patient, the daily average of meteorological data (temperature, humidity, sunlight duration, solar radiation) was recorded from the date of CYCL to ER. Multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, fertilization method, year of the cycle, gonadotropin dose, and transferred embryo grade was performed to determine the relationship between the meteorological parameters and clinical pregnancy. Patients with one successful cycle and one failed cycle were subtracted for a case-control subgroup analysis through mixed effect logistics regressions. Time-series analysis of data in the epidemic level was conducted using the distributed lag linear and non-linear models (DLNMs). Results There were 1029 fresh cycles in 860 women (mean age 31.9 ± 2.0 years). Higher mean temperature from CYCL to OR (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.04; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01–1.07, P = 0.01) increased the odds of pregnancy, while OR to ER did not show any statistical significance. Compared to that in winter, the odds of becoming pregnant were higher during higher temperature seasons, summer and autumn (aOR 1.47, 95%CI 0.97–2.23, P = 0.07 (marginally significant) and aOR 1.73, 95%CI 1.12–2.68, P = 0.02, respectively). Humidity, sunlight duration, and solar radiation had no effect on the outcome. The subgroup analysis confirmed this finding. The time-series analysis revealed a positive association between temperature and relative risk for pregnancy. Conclusions In IVF treatment, the ambient temperature variation alters the pregnancy rates; this aspect must be considered when obtaining patient consent for assisted conception.

This article examines the employment of undocumented workers by Los Angeles manufacturers of automobile parts. It suggests that this is part of a broad trend towards primary labor market erosion. The labor force is termed transitional because it is seen as facilitating firms during the current period of industrial change. Insight into the role of these workers is derived from eight case studies representing 926 workers. Regressions on the determinants of wages and the percent undocumented in the workplace are developed from 21 firms and 2,321 workers.

Pontibacter akesuensis strain AKS 1 T was found in Akesu, Xinjiang Province, China, and exhibits the extraordinary ability to metabolize various substrates and is resistant to solar radiation. To gain insight into the bacterial genetic determinants for this adaptability, we report the complete genome sequence of strain AKS 1 T .

In this talk, delivered at the 2014 California State University, Long Beach, symposium celebrating the 75th anniversary of the publication of Ask the Dust, Cooper recounts the story of how he came to discover a remarkable letter, to that point unknown, written by John Fante in 1933. Addressed to fellow Italian American writer Jo Pagano, who like Fante had ventured west from Colorado to seek writing success in Los Angeles, the letter provides insight into the crippling doubts and frustrations that burdened the young Fante even as it reveals his deep-seated confidence that he would one day write a great novel. Published here for the first time, this letter prefigures another remarkable Fante letter, the one written in 1938 that is now known as the Prologue to Ask the Dust.

Abstract It is well established that surface ozone levels are greatly affected by orography, solar radiation intensity, meteorological conditions, and the levels of their precursors. In this work, the authors study the sea–land breeze circulation in its relation with the behavior of ozone in a coastal area, located in southwestern Europe, with high levels of solar radiation and an important industrial complex emitting air pollutants. Hourly mean data over a 7-yr period (1999–2005) have been used in the study. Two patterns of sea–land breeze have been identified after analyzing 2298 days of measurements: a “pure” breeze (179 cases) and another one, called a “nonpure” breeze (284 cases), which is the resulting flow of the former and northwesterlies synoptic forcing. Among other results, the highest levels of surface ozone were observed under pure sea–land breeze, with hourly values up to 100 μg m−3 in the mean daily evolution. In contrast, for a nonpure breeze, the 24-h average daily value was lower than the corresponding one under a pure breeze by a factor of 1.16 and could reach 1.60 in representative real cases. These findings give evidence that the formation and accumulation of ozone are favored by the conditions under a pure sea–land breeze: that is, perpendicular wind directions toward the coastline, effective recirculation of air masses, and formation of ozone residual layers above the sea. Because these atmospheric conditions occur in other coastal regions in the world, the conclusions of this study could be extended to them.
