Coherent annealing-twin boundaries are constant structure and energy interfaces with an average interfacial free energy of ∼19mJ/m2 versus ∼210 and ∼835mJ/m2 for incoherent twins and “regular” grain boundaries respectively in 304 stainless steels (SS). Due to their low energy, coherent twins form carbides about a factor of 100 slower than grain boundaries, and limited work has also shown differences in Cr-depletion (sensitization) between twin versus grain boundaries. Plastic deformation, may, however, alter the kinetics and thermodynamics of twin-sensitization which is not well understood. The objective of this work was to understand the mechanisms of carbide precipitation and Cr-depletion on coherent twin boundaries in deformed SS. The research is directed toward using this invariant structure and energy interface to understand and model the role of interfacial characteristics on deformation-induced sensitization in SS. Carbides and Cr-depletion were examined on a 20%-strain, 0.051%C-304SS, heat treated to 625°C-4.5h, as described elsewhere.

AbstractThis paper contributes to the contemporary business ethics narrative by proposing an approach to corporate ethical decision making (EDM) which serves as an alternative to the imposition of codes and standards to address the ethical consequences of grand challenges, like COVID-19, which are impacting today’s society. Our alternative approach to EDM embraces the concept of reflexive thinking and ethical consciousness among the individual agents who collectively are the corporation and who make ethical decisions, often in isolation, removed from the collocated corporate setting. We draw on the teachings of the Canadian philosopher and theologian, Fr. Bernard Lonergan, to conceptualize an approach to EDM which focuses on the ethics of the corporate agent by nurturing the universal and invariant structure that is operational in all human beings. Embracing Lonergan’s dynamic cognitive structure of human knowing, and the structure of the human good, we advance a paradigm of EDM in business which emboldens authentic ethical thought, decision making, and action commensurate with virtuous living and germane to human flourishing. Lonergan’s philosophy guides us away from the imposition of over-arching corporate codes of ethics and inspires us, as individual agents, to attend to the data of our own consciousness in our ethical decision making. Such cognitional endowment leads us out of the ethics of the ‘timeless present’ (Islam and Greenwood in Journal of Business Ethics 170: 1–4, 2021) towards ethical authenticity in business, leaving us better placed to reflect upon and address the ethical issues emanating from grand challenges like COVID-19.

Professional competence is based on the invariant, which is a systemic and structural education that contains five interrelated components: axiological, motivational, individual-psychological, instrumental, conative. There is no universally accepted notion of “competence” and “competency”. There is no scientifically grounded definition of e invariant structure of competence of the subject of professional activity. The question remains of a productive pedagogical model containing a system of didactic conditions and modern pedagogical technologies that are adequate for the purpose of forming invariants of research competence of student. The basis for the development of such a model was the theory of contextual education by A. A. Verbitskiy. The basic unit of content here is the learning situation, which is a problematic nature. The system of such situations may be based on a situational and contextual approach to the formation of invariants of the research competency of student.

As one of the protagonists in education, the perspective of the students is fundamental in the determination of inclusive education in an educational center. The Index for Inclusion is an instrument and strategy for self-evaluation. One of their questionnaires, the questionnaire for compulsory secondary education students, is intended for students and has become one of the most used instruments to help teaching teams to self-assess their political and practical cultures from the perspective of the values and principles of educational inclusion worldwide. Some of the questionnaires included in the Index have been used in many studies, mainly in a qualitative way. For this reason, the present study intends to show evidence of validity of the Index for Inclusion questionnaire of students in a quantitative way through an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). In this study, 727 secondary school students (359 boys and 368 girls) aged between 13 and 19 years (M = 13.89; SD = 1.35) took part. They belonged to six educational centers in the province of Almeria. To analyze the temporal stability of the Index for Inclusion student questionnaire, a second independent sample of 81 secondary school students was used, aged between 15 and 18 years (M= 16.14; SD = 0.78). The results revealed adequate adjustment rates, showing the invariant structure with respect to gender. The Student Inclusion Index was shown to be a robust and adequate psychometric instrument to assess the degree of development of inclusive education in schools from the perspective of secondary school students, and therefore, its future application to students in schools is recommended.

How does biological motion perception change with display orientation? As previously shown, display inversion (180°) completely prevents veridical perception of biological motion. However, with upright orientation (0°), observers are able to recover the invariant structure through biological motion despite reverse transformation (showing the film backwards) or changing the presentation rate (Pavlova, 1995 Perception24 Supplement, 112). In the present experiments, observers saw the biological motion pattern at various display deviations, from inverted to upright orientation (180°, 150°, 120°, 90°, 60°, 30°, 0°), in the right or left hemifield, on a circular screen monitor. The display consisted of an array of 11 dots on the main joints of an invisible walker moving as if on a treadmill. While viewing (60 s), observers pressed a key each time their perception changed from one stable percept to another (eg when the direction of apparent rotation of the pattern reversed). The perceived multistability (the number of key-presses) increased as orientation was varied from inverted to 90°, and then decreased between 90° and upright. The recognition of walking figure improved abruptly with changing orientation: at deviations of 60° and 30° most observer reported seeing the walking figure spontaneously, yet the pattern was seen as multistable. The findings imply the relative power of constraints (such as orientation) in perception of biological motion that is discussed in relation to the KSD principle in event perception [Runeson, 1994, in Perceiving Events and Objects Eds Jansson, Epstein, Bergström (Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum) pp 383 – 405].

Abstract The statistical properties of the repeating fast radio burst FRB 121102 are investigated. We find that the cumulative distributions of fluence, flux density, total energy and waiting time can be well fitted by the bent power law. In addition, the probability density functions of fluctuations of fluence, flux density and total energy well follow the Tsallis q-Gaussian distribution. The q values keep steady around q ∼ 2 for different scale intervals, indicating a scale-invariant structure of the bursts. The statistical properties of FRB 121102 are very similar to that of the soft gamma repeater SGR J1550-5418. The underlying physical implications need to be further investigated.
