AbstractThe theory of eigenmode operation of Coriolis vibratory gyroscopes and its implementation on a thin-film piezoelectric gyroscope is presented. It is shown analytically that the modal alignment of resonant gyroscopes can be achieved by applying a rotation transformation to the actuation and sensing directions regardless of the transduction mechanism. This technique is especially suitable for mode matching of piezoelectric gyroscopes, obviating the need for narrow capacitive gaps or DC polarization voltages. It can also be applied for mode matching of devices that require sophisticated electrode arrangements for modal alignment, such as electrostatic pitch and roll gyroscopes with slanted electrodes utilized for out-of-plane quadrature cancellation. Gyroscopic operation of a 3.15 MHz AlN-on-Si annulus resonator that utilizes a pair of high-Q degenerate in-plane vibration modes is demonstrated. Modal alignment of the piezoelectric gyroscope is accomplished through virtual alignment of the excitation and readout electrodes to the natural direction of vibration mode shapes in the presence of fabrication nonidealities. Controlled displacement feedback of the gyroscope drive signal is implemented to achieve frequency matching of the two gyroscopic modes. The piezoelectric gyroscope shows a mode-matched operation bandwidth of ~250 Hz, which is one of the largest open-loop bandwidth values reported for a mode-matched MEMS gyroscope, a small motional resistance of ~1300 Ω owing to efficient piezoelectric transduction, and a scale factor of 1.57 nA/°/s for operation at atmospheric pressure, which greatly relaxes packaging requirements. Eigenmode operation results in an ~35 dB reduction in the quadrature error at the resonance frequency. The measured angle random walk of the device is 0.86°/√h with a bias instability of 125°/h limited by the excess noise of the discrete electronics.

Abstract The three-dimensional vibration of an arbitrarily thick annular disk is investigated for two classes of boundary conditions: all surfaces traction-free, and all free except for the clamped inner radius. These two models represent limiting cases of such common engineering components as automotive and aircraft disk brakes, for which existing models focus on out-of-plane bending vibration. For a disk of significant thickness, vibration modes in which motion occurs within the disk’s equilibrium plane can play a substantial role in setting its dynamic response. Laboratory experiments demonstrate that in-plane modes exist at frequencies comparable to those of out-of-plane bending even for thickness-to-diameter ratios as small as 10−1. The equations for three-dimensional motion are discretized through the Ritz technique, yielding natural frequencies and mode shapes for coupled axial, radial, and circumferential deformations. This treatment is applicable to “disks” of arbitrary dimension, and encompasses classical models for plates, bars, cylinders, rings, and shells. The solutions so obtained converge in the limiting cases to the values expected from the classical theories, and to ones that account for shear deformation and rotary inertia. The three-dimensional model demonstrates that for geometries within the technologically-important range, the natural frequencies of certain in- and out-of-plane modes can be close to one another, or even identically repeated.

Abstract In this paper, the mathematical model of a Bernoulli-Euler cantilever beam fixed on a moving cart and carrying an intermediate lumped mass is derived. The equations of motion of the beam-mass-cart system is analyzed utilizing unconstrained modal analysis, and a unified frequency equation which can be generally applied to this kind of system is obtained. The change of natural frequencies and mode shapes with respect to the change of the mass ratios of the beam, the lumped mass and the cart and to the position of the lumped mass is investigated. The open-loop responses of the system by arbitrary forcing function are also obtained through numerical simulations.

In the present work, a Bernoulli – Euler beam fixed on a moving cart and carrying lumped tip mass subjected to external periodic force is considered. Such a model could describe the motion of structures like forklift vehicles or ladder cars that carry heavy loads and military airplane wings with storage loads on their span. The nonlinear equations of motion which describe the global motion as well as the vibration motion were derived using Lagrangian approach under the inextensibility condition. In order to investigate the influence of the axial movement of the cart on the response of the system, unconstrained modal analysis has been carried out, and accurate mode shapes of the beam deflection were obtained. The assumed mode method was utilized for approximating the beam elastic deformation based on the single unconstrained mode shapes. Numerical simulation has been carried out to estimate the open-loop response of the nonlinear beam-mass-cart model as well as for the simplified linear model under the influence of the periodic excitation force. Also a comparison study between the responses of the linear and nonlinear models was established. It was shown that the maximum values of the beam tip deflection estimated from the nonlinear model are lower than the corresponding values obtained via the linear model, which reveals the importance of considering nonlinear hardening term in formulating the equations of motion for such system in order to come with more accurate and reliable model.

Abstract A calculation of the eigenstructure for mixed vibratory systems composed of a continuous beam and concentrated actuators is presented. The combined distributed and lumped element systems include actuators for active vibration control. The focus of this paper is on open loop models where with zero voltage input to the actuators. The continuous beam is isolated and discretized via modal analysis and combined with the actuator dynamics to form an asymmetric system. The resulting system is cast into a generalized nondimensional form suitable for studying system behavior for a broad range of system parameters. The solution is expressed as a series using the isolated beam mode eigenfunctions as a basis. The coefficients in the series are obtained from the complex eigensolution of the asymmetric system. Two examples are used to show a comparison of the complex mixed system and real isolated beam natural frequencies and mode shapes. The effect of beam and actuator parameter values are investigated via a key dimensionless parameter.

ABSTRACTStiffened wing and fuselage panels often have a postbuckling reserve of strength, enabling them to carry loads far in excess of their critical buckling loads. Therefore allowing for postbuckling in design can reduce their weight, hence reducing fuel consumption and environmental impact. The present paper extends the postbuckling analysis in the exact strip software VICONOPT to more accurately reflect the skewed mode shapes arising from shear load and anisotropy. Such mode shapes are represented by a series of sinusoidal responses with different half-wavelengths which are coupled together using Lagrangian multipliers to enforce the boundary conditions. In postbuckling analysis the in-plane deflections involve responses with additional half-wavelengths which are absent from the out-of-plane deflection series. Numerical results are presented and compared with finite element analysis for validation. The present analysis gives close results compared to the finite element and finite strip methods and saves computational time significantly.

Numerical simulation was carried out to determine the dynamic properties of the Tsing Ma Suspension Bridge. Both the structure as a whole and individual subcomponents were modeled. Classical analytical solutions for simplified models from the available literature were compared with the results obtained from a finite-element code. Quantitative results for static deflection, natural frequencies, and mode shapes were compared with analytical solutions from linear theory. Out-of-plane modes were shown to be dominant. For in-plane antisymmetric and symmetric bending modes, in which the suspension cable and bridge deck vibrate in the same direction, the natural frequency of the main span of the bridge is determined to be approximately equal to the square root of the sum of the squares of the frequencies of the cable and bridge deck.

A digital excitation-calibration technique of dual-mass MEMS gyroscope for closed-loop mode-matching control is presented in this paper. The technique, which takes advantage of the symmetrical amplitude response of MEMS gyroscope, exploits a two-side excitation signal to actuate the sense mode to obtain the corresponding DC tuning voltage. The structural characteristics of dual-mass decoupled MEMS gyroscope and the tuning principle of excitation-calibration technique are introduced firstly. Then, the scheme of digital excitation-calibration system for the real-time mode-matching control is presented. Simultaneously, open-loop analysis and closed-loop analysis are deduced, respectively, to analyze the sources of tuning error and system stability. To verify the validity of the scheme and theoretical analysis, the system model was established by SIMULINK. The simulation results are proved to be consistent with the theoretical analysis, verifying the feasibility of the digital excitation-calibration technique. The control algorithms of the system were implemented with a FPGA device. Experimental results demonstrate that digital excitation-calibration technique can realize mode-matching within 1 s. The prototype with real-time mode-matching control has a bias instability of 0.813 ∘ /h and an ARW (Angular Random Walk) of 0.0117 ∘ / h . Compared to the mode-mismatching condition, the bias instability and ARW are improved by 3.25 and 4.49 times respectively.

The purpose of this paper is to present a method that has been developed to identify if vortex induced vibration (VIV) occurs in well jumper systems. Moreover, a method has been developed to determine when VIV mitigation measures such as strakes are required. The method involves determining the in-plane and out-of-plane natural frequencies and mode shapes. The natural frequencies are then used, in conjunction with the maximum bottom current expected at a given location to determine if suppression is required. The natural frequency of a jumper system is a function of many variables, e.g. span length, leg height, pipe diameter and thickness, buoyancy placement, buoyancy uplift, buoyancy OD, insulation thickness, and contents of the jumper. The suppression requirement is based upon calculating a lower bound lock-in current speed based upon an assumed velocity bandwidth centered about the lock-in current. The out-of-plane VIV cross-flow response is produced by a current in the plane of the jumper; whereas the in-plane VIV cross-flow response is produced by the out-of-plane current. Typically, the out-of-plane natural frequency is smaller than the in-plane natural frequency. Jumpers with small spans have higher natural frequencies; thus small span jumpers may require no suppression or suppression on the vertical legs. Whereas, larger span jumpers may require no suppression, suppression on the vertical legs or suppression on all the legs. The span of jumper systems (i.e. production, water injection, gas lift/injection ...) may vary in one given field; it has become apparent that not all jumper systems require suppression. This technique has allowed us to recognize when certain legs of a given jumper system may require suppression, thus leading to a jumper design whose safety is not compromised while in the production mode, as well as minimizing downtime and identifying potential savings from probable fatigue failures.

The natural frequencies and mode shapes of nonrotating blade-disk-shaft systems have been experimentally and analytically investigated. Two mechanisms of blade motion coupling by the disk and shaft were investigated: inertial coupling by the rigid body motion of the disk on a flexible shaft; and out-of-plane elastic coupling due to disk flexure. A Ritz analysis was carried out which identifies the non-dimensional frequency and mass ratios which govern the blade-disk-shaft coupling. The mass ratios depend directly on the effective blade stagger angle. Estimates of these parameters were made for three typical rotors. Two experiments were performed which model these typical rotors. A single set of well-tuned flat blades was mounted on two different disks, one flexible and one rigid, which were in turn mounted on a flexible shaft. The blade-disk attachments were designed to allow for variations in the blade stagger angles. Experimental results show excellent agreement with simple analytical models derived by Ritz analysis. Data are reported in terms of nondimensional parameters. The results clearly show the strong dependence of the system coupling on the blade stagger angle and the blade-disk frequency and mass ratios.

A round elevator traveling cable is modeled using a singularity-free beam formulation. Equilibria of the traveling cable with different elevator car positions are studied. Natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the traveling cable are calculated and they are in excellent agreement with those calculated by abaqus. In-plane natural frequencies of the traveling cable do not change much with the car position compared with its out-of-plane ones. Dynamic responses of the traveling cable are calculated and they are in good agreement with those from commercial multibody dynamics software recurdyn. Effects of vertical motion of the car on free responses of the traveling cable and those of in-plane and out-of-plane building sways on forced responses are investigated.
