Abstract Pet food industry has grown considerably in the last few years and it is expected to continue with this rate. Despite the economic impact of this sector and the consumer concerns for the increasing number of food and feed adulteration cases, few studies have been published on mislabelling in pet foods. We therefore investigated the capability of a next generation sequencing-based mini-barcoding approach to identify animal species in pet food products. In a preliminary analysis, a 127 bp fragment of the COI gene was tested on both individual specimens and ad hoc mixed fresh samples used as testers, to evaluate its discrimination power and primers effectiveness. Eighteen pet food products of different price categories and forms available on the market (i.e. kibbles, bites, pâté and strips) were analysed through an NGS approach in biological replicates. At least one of the species listed in the ingredients was not detected in half of the products, while seven products showed supplementary species in addition to those stated on the label. Due to the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity demonstrated, this method can be proposed as food genetic traceability system to evaluate both the feed and food quality timely along the supply chain.

Numerous cases of acute renal failure in dogs and cats from 2004-2007 were associated with the ingestion of dog and cat pet food products and the suspected contaminant was identified as melamine and its derivatives such as cyanuric acid and melamine cyanurate. Melamine is a chemical used primarily for the manufacture of plastics, coatings, commercial filters, adhesives and compounds in the plate-making industry and kitchen appliance.But then these compounds have been abused to increase the content of nitrogen compounds in human food products and animal feed products, respectively. Increasing the content of nitrogen compounds from melamine aims to increase the value of false protein food and feed. Melamine basically has a wide security limit so it is relatively non-toxic if consumed by humans and animals. However, many studies and case reports show that melamine can cause damage to the kidneys especially if present together with cyanuric acid in the body.This paper aims to provide a simple overview and discussion in cases of damage to the urinary tract in dogs and cats that are likely caused by toxicity of melamine and its derivatives are likely to have occurred in Indonesia.

Establishing a blockchain food traceability system (BFTS) is increasingly important and urgent to resolve the contradiction between consumers’ intention regarding safe food selections and the spread of polluted foods. Using the advantages of blockchain, such as immutability, decentralization, openness, and anonymity, we can build trusted food traceability systems based on these important characteristics. With reliable information, traceability from production to sales can effectively improve food safety. In this research, multiple models, namely, the information success model (ISS) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) are formed into a conceptual integrated framework to study the intentions’ influenced factors of BFTS technology for Chinese consumers to help ensure food safety and the quality of Chinese organic food products. A face-to-face questionnaire survey with 300 valid responses was analyzed by Partial Least Square from the Chinese consumers focusing on the organic food products. This study found that the attitude and perceived behavioral control qualities significantly and positively affect the usage intention in adopting BFTS, while the subjective norms are positively but not significantly correlation with the usage intention in using BFTS. The above results will inform suggestions for productors and academics along with implications to promote BFTS’ usage intention.

The article substantiates the author’s hypothesis of the fundamental reasons for periodic «ups» in prices for essential food products, including the most recent price jump in the second half of 2020. Both the official assessments of the causes of recurring food price surges and the measures taken by the executive branch to stop and prevent them are subjected to critical analysis. Conclusions and fundamental proposals are formulated aimed at eradicating the systemic causes of price volatility in the domestic food market.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of perceived food quality and consumer ethnocentrism and potential trade-offs between these two concepts in Russian consumers’ food purchase decisions after the implementation of the Russian import ban. Design/methodology/approach Survey data were collected via in-person interviews in the City of Perm, which is one of the largest and most industrial cities in Russia. A double-bounded dichotomous-choice contingent valuation model is utilized to estimate willingness to pay (WTP) and to analyze factors that affect consumers’ choice. Findings The results suggest that most respondents do not consider domestically produced cheese as a risky product in terms of food safety but simply of lower quality than imported cheese. However, the average respondent’s WTP discount for domestic cheese compared to imported cheese is 8 percent, which is relatively small. This corresponds to participants’ opinion that buying domestic cheese is the right thing to do since it supports Russian farmers and producers. The results indicate further that with increasing education and income levels, individuals are less likely to prefer domestically produced cheese for either economic or quality reasons. This effect is stronger for the quality preference. Research limitations/implications The results indicate that if the Russian government aims at expanding the domestic food market further, more attention needs to be paid to ensuring the quality of domestic food products in order to increase consumer acceptance and WTP. Originality/value This is the first study providing empirical evidence on Russian consumers’ attitudes and perceptions of domestically vs imported food products after the implementation of the Russian import ban, which can be considered as an external policy shock.

The aim is to study the problems of ensuring food security of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the conditions of the Eurasian Economic Union. Methods - monographic, economic-statistical, abstract-logical. Results - it is shown that each of the EAEU member States has identified priority areas and mechanisms for sustainable development. The main economic indicators of agroindustrial complex, indicating a significant increase in the volume of agricultural production in comparison with the previous time periodare considered. The level of per capita consumption of basic food products of the Union member States has been justified, which characterizes the economic and physical availability of food and confirms a favorable situation in this area. The regions producing the largest volumes of food products in monetary terms have been identified; sectors that provide more than half of all production in the countryare identified. Despite the positive trends, problems that have a significant impact on the growth of production potential of Kazakhstanare identified. An insufficient level of consumption of certain types of products in the republic is noted. Conclusions - in order to ensure the collective food security of the EAEU member States, measures aimed to develop cooperation and integration in the AIC, to create a favorable environment for increasing the competitiveness of the industry, marketing of agricultural products and foodhave been proposed. In agricultural policy, it is important to take into account the main risks and threats to sustainable economic development: exceeding the threshold value of imports; price imbalances in goods market; shortage of qualified personnel; underdevelopment of the system of monitoring and forecasting indicators of agri-food market.

The present issue reviews literature and own research data and gives toxicological and hygienic characteristic of sterigmatocystin. This mycotoxin is produced by fungi of Aspergillus, Bipolaris, Chaetomium, Emiricella species, and is found in cereals, food products (bread, cheese, spices, coffee, dietary supplements) and feed. Sterigmatocystin being a biogenic precursor of aflatoxin B1, has similar chemical structure and exhibits the same toxicological properties, but its toxicity is ten times lower. However, these toxins are rarely detected together. A. versicolor and A. nidulans do not have enzymes necessary for the conversion of sterigmatocystin into aflatoxins, on the contrary, A. flavus and А. parasiticus transform almost all STC into aflatoxins. Sterigmatocystin has been recognized by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a 2B carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic to humans). The primary target organ for both mycotoxins is liver. Sterigmatocystin shows mutagenic, toxic and teratogenic effects in animals. Up to date national and international data on sterigmatocystin occurrence in different products is summarized, analytical methods of the determination are reviewed, hygienic assessment of the STC as a priority pollutant is given in the present paper. Also information on STC exposure assessment with regard to different kinds of foodstuff in different countries is being reported, available data on maximum levels of STC in food and feed is discussed. However, data on toxin’s occurrence in food is insufficient for elaboration of hygienic regulations on allowable mycotoxin’s concentration in priority products. The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) enables a fast exchange of information between bodies and institutions involved in the system (EU Member State national food safety authorities, Commission, EFSA, ESA, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland) in order to respond promptly to the health risks associated with food and feed. Salmonella is an important cause of EU foodborne outbreaks, most frequently reported pathogenic microorganism in food in the last few years. The aim of this study was to analyze RASFF notifications on food products contaminated with Salmonella spp. involving Croatia in the period from 01/01/2014 to 31/12/2018. All data were downloaded from the RASFF database (RASFF portal) and processed in MS Excel 2010. The collected data provided information on the: country(ies) of origin and distribution of the contaminated product, notifying country, product and product category, notification type, risk decision, action taken, distribution status and, for some incidents, a Salmonella spp. serovar. Notifications mainly concerned "poultry meat and poultry meat products". Just over half of the reported food products originated from Poland, Brazil and Italy. Croatia was notifying country in almost half of the published notifications. Majority of the notifications were classified as alert notifications and of serious risk. Most of the Salmonella spp. notifications were based on official controls on the market and on company's own check.

Fraud of fake halal label products does not open halal production processes about the supply chain from upstream to downstream. Therefore, in product integrity agreements, it is necessary to implement traceability in the food supply chain as an effective tool in ensuring product halalness and ensuring food products are safe. Therefore, this study tries to make a model of halal Supply Chain Traceability in the integrity agreement of halal food products. The method used in modeling the halal supply chain traceability system using Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM). Elements of a halal supply chain tracking system, in addition to halal procurement, halal manufacturing, halal logistics, halal distribution, supplier traceability, producer traceability, logistics traceability, distribution traceability. ISM Modeling results in the integration of halal products are located in Quadran IV Driver Power with halal manufacturing, producer traceability, supplier traceability, Quadran III Strong-Very Driver Depends on Variables (Linkage), Traceability system elements of the halal supply chain that are in accordance with this Quadran will be sought integrity of halal products and has strong advantages as a driver, this quadrant contains halal procurement, traceability distribution, halal logistics. Whereas the halal supply chain traceability system that is not related to the integrity of halal products comes in. Quadran II Driver Power namely: halal logistics and distribution traceability.

The article discusses the possibility of expanding the range of strategically important consumer food products such as vegetable oil.The necessity of developing an innovative technology for obtaining non-traditional vegetable oils, which will improve the economic mechanism for the development of the food market, has been substantiated. The physical and chemical characteristics of oil seeds grown in Uzbekistan have been studied. It has been proven that the oils obtained from non-traditional oilseeds can be used for consumption, and will play an important role in expanding the range of non-traditional vegetable oils.
