The present issue reviews literature and own research data and gives toxicological and hygienic characteristic of sterigmatocystin. This mycotoxin is produced by fungi of Aspergillus, Bipolaris, Chaetomium, Emiricella species, and is found in cereals, food products (bread, cheese, spices, coffee, dietary supplements) and feed. Sterigmatocystin being a biogenic precursor of aflatoxin B1, has similar chemical structure and exhibits the same toxicological properties, but its toxicity is ten times lower. However, these toxins are rarely detected together. A. versicolor and A. nidulans do not have enzymes necessary for the conversion of sterigmatocystin into aflatoxins, on the contrary, A. flavus and А. parasiticus transform almost all STC into aflatoxins. Sterigmatocystin has been recognized by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a 2B carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic to humans). The primary target organ for both mycotoxins is liver. Sterigmatocystin shows mutagenic, toxic and teratogenic effects in animals. Up to date national and international data on sterigmatocystin occurrence in different products is summarized, analytical methods of the determination are reviewed, hygienic assessment of the STC as a priority pollutant is given in the present paper. Also information on STC exposure assessment with regard to different kinds of foodstuff in different countries is being reported, available data on maximum levels of STC in food and feed is discussed. However, data on toxin’s occurrence in food is insufficient for elaboration of hygienic regulations on allowable mycotoxin’s concentration in priority products. Aspergillus species influence human and animal health directly and indirectly with a significant economic impact on the society. A. flavus and A. parasiticus are the two major species that produce aflatoxins. Several mycotoxins are reported from several other mycotoxigenic fungi of which the aflatoxins are the most toxic and damaging polyketides. Economically important crops such as maize, rice, cotton seed, peanuts, and spices are all susceptible to contamination of aflatoxin. The aim of this review is to make an extensive review and come up with ways to curtail this global challenge on how to manage aflatoxin contamination in crops and other food products since the toxins have been classified as potent carcinogens and about 25% of food is being lost due to aflatoxin contamination annually. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) conducted evaluation of several chemicals of their carcinogenic potential and classified aflatoxins as most potent natural, known human carcinogens. The methodology was by selecting the most recent researches conducted on new techniques to be employed in overcoming the issue of aflatoxin contamination both during the pre and post-harvest strategies. The Data gathered was subjected to appropriate statistical tool so as to come up with more improved techniques. It was found that both chemical and physical methods have certain drawbacks which may lead to drop in human and animal health, cause a significant decline in the quality of food products, losses of nutritional value, high cost and cause undesirable health effects, but biological methods using microorganisms seems more promising, they provide an attractive alternative tool for removing toxins and safeguarding the value of food and feed in an eco-friendly way. Almost all orthodontic wires suffer from corrosion as they are intra-orally engaged. This chemical structure alteration appears on the surface of these wires, surface topography can be easily visualised with scanning electron microscope method. The aim of our study was to assess the intraoral corrosion of the retrieved orthodontic Ni-Ti archwires. Archwire retrieval procedure yielded approximately 30 retrieved wires, placed intra-orally for 1-5 months. SEM analysis was performed and surface changes were interpreted. Our SEM results showed, that surface corrosion and pitting can be seen on the surface of retrieved Ni-Ti wires, the depth of corrosion depends on the time wires have been engaged in the oral cavity. With regards of metal liberation consequently surface corrosion, practitioners should be avare of these chemical changes which can affect the resistence of the orthodontic appliance and patient health.

Bacterial transformation and gene transfection can be understood as being the results of introducing specific genetic material into cells, resulting in gene expression, and adding a new genetic trait to the host cell. Many studies have been carried out to investigate different types of lipids and cationic polymers as promising nonviral vectors for DNA transfer. The present study aimed to carry out a systematic review on the use of biopolymeric materials as nonviral vectors. The methodology was carried out based on searches of scientific articles and applications for patents published or deposited from 2006 to 2020 in different databases for patents (EPO, USPTO, and INPI) and articles (Scopus, Web of Science, and Scielo). The results showed that there are some deposits of patents regarding the use of chitosan as a gene carrier. The 16 analyzed articles allowed us to infer that the use of biopolymers as nonviral vectors is limited due to the low diversity of biopolymers used for these purposes. It was also observed that the use of different materials as nonviral vectors is based on chemical structure modifications of the material, mainly by the addition of cationic groups. Thus, the use of biopolymers as nonviral vectors is still limited to only a few polysaccharide types, emphasizing the need for further studies involving the use of different biopolymers in processes of gene transfer.

Abstract Objective: Previous studies from European countries noted that food products promoted on TV for children did not comply with international guidelines, including the World Health Organization European Nutrient Profile Model (WHO-ENPM) and the EU Pledge Nutrition Criteria (EU-PNC, an initiative developed by leading food companies). We aim to provide new data from Italy. Design: Evaluation of Italian TV advertisements. Data on nutritional values for food product advertised were compared with nutritional standards issued by the WHO-ENPM and the EU-PNC. Setting: In total, 180 h of TV programmes from six Italian channels, 2016–2017. Participants: Eight hundred and ten consecutive advertisements during children’s programmes. Results: Out of 810 advertisements, 90 (11·1 %) referred to food products. Among these, 84·5 % of the foods promoted did not meet the WHO-ENPM and 55·6 % the EU-PNC guidelines. Advertisements promoting sweet and salty snacks (i.e. ≥ 70 % of all foods) v. other food products showed higher non-compliance with both the WHO-ENPM (OR: 73·8; 95 % CI: 4·09, 1330) and the EU-PNC (OR: 9·21; 95 % CI: 2·82, 30·1). Conclusions: In Italy, most food advertisements during children’s programmes are not compliant with European nutritional standards. Almost all the advertisements for snacks do not meet international guidelines. As the WHO-ENPM guidelines do not propose standards for all the food products, including meals, there is an urgent need to define independent and easy-to-read guidelines for food advertisements targeting children. As a first step towards the complete ban of food advertisements targeting children recommended by other researchers, these guidelines should be enforced by all the TV broadcasts.

Elenine is the aglycone of elenoside, a cytotoxic arylnaphthalene lignan (NSC 644013-W/1) derived fromJusticia hyssopifolia. (Family: Acanthaceae). Elenoside is a β-D-glucoside, with a similar chemical structure to etoposide, exhibiting central depressant activity. In the present study, elenine was given to mice and rats at doses of 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg. Acute toxicity (24 h) and general behaviour in mice was studied as well as its effects on muscular relaxant activity, locomotor activity (Varimex test), and the open-field test and were compared with 10 mg/kg of chlorpromazine. Elenine produced a reduction in the permanence time in muscular relaxant activity (traction test). Spontaneous activity was lower in the Varimex test. The ambulation and rearing were lower compared with the control group, and an increase in boluses was observed in the open-field test. Thus, it can be concluded that elenine has central sedative effects at lower doses than those used with elenoside and has a possible application in conditions of anxiety.

Since the first observations of hypoplastic and aplastic thalidomide deformities in infants (McBride, 1961; Lenz, 1962), the literature on this subject has grown to many hundreds of communications. Experimental investigations in almost all cases have been undertaken to show whether thalidomide and its metabolites have any teratogenic effects in experimental animals. Numerous review papers are available on this subject, e.g. Giroud, Tuchmann-Duplessis & Mercier-Parot (1962), Somers (1963), and Salzgeber & Wolff (1964). Chick embryos did not seem for some time to be suitable for experimental production of typical thalidomide deformities. However, Kemper (1962a, b), Yang, Yang & Liang (1962). Boylen, Home & Johnson (1963) and Leone (1963) have shown that thalidomide can produce a whole range of ectromelian deformities provided that it is introduced into the egg at a particular period of embryonic development.

Background: Vasculitides are specific inflammations of the blood vessel wall that can take place in any organ system of the human body. They may occur as a primary process (primary systemic vasculitides, PSV) or may be secondary to another underlying disease. In general, in association with the specific type of vasculitis, affected vessels vary in size, type, and location. In the following scoping review, we present clinical characteristics and manifestations of PSV with reference to the genitourinary system. Materials and methods: A non-systematic search of the relevant literature was conducted using three electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science) up to 29 October 2021. Results: Urogenital manifestations of PSV are infrequent, with the most commonly reported findings as prostatic or testicular involvements. However, almost all other organs of the genitourinary system can be affected. Conclusions: Because of the clinical heterogeneity and non-specific symptoms, the proper diagnosis of PSV is often delayed and constricted. Fast identification of urological manifestations of vasculitides is essential in implementing appropriate therapy and avoiding unnecessary, harmful, and invasive surgery.

Crude oil is a highly complex mixture of hydrocarbons amounting to hundreds of individual compounds with different chemical structure and molecular weight plus a series of lower molecular weight compounds other than hydrocarbons (phenols, thiols, naphthenic acids, heterocyclic compounds with N (pyridines, pyrrole, indole, s.o.) compounds S (alkyl thiols, thiophene, etc.) (Zarnea, 1994). Mineral oil and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) creates larger environmental problems. They are considered particularly dangerous. In this regard, EPA Agency from U.S.A. includes a number of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons under 16 priority pollutants, which require special attention. IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has identified 15 types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including six of the 16 types of PAHs, identifiable by the USEPA as having carcinogenic properties (Chauhan Archana et al., 2008).

Este trabalho tem como objetivo contribuir na compilação de artigos científicos sobre as plantas medicinais que possuem efeitos embriotóxicos e teratogênicos comprovados através de testes experimentais in vivo e in vitro. Foi realizado um levantamento nas bases de dados Medline, Pubmed, Web of Science, Cochrane, Biblioteca virtual em saúde, Lilacs e Scielo com os descritores, “Medicinal plants, embryotoxicity”; “Medicinal plants, Teratogenic effects”; “Medicinal plants, teratogenicity” e seus correspondentes em português: “Plantas medicinais, embriotoxicidade”; “Plantas medicinais, efeitos Teratogênicos”; “Plantas Medicinais Teratogenicidade”. Oito artigos de ensaios in vivo e quatro de in vitro e um que apresenta os dois ensaios, preencheram os critérios de inclusão e exclusão e foram selecionados para esta revisão. Destes, cinco foram realizados na América, um na Europa, três na África e dois na Ásia. Na maioria dos estudos in vivo o extrato da planta foi injetado no animal, observando assim seus efeitos. A partir deste estudo, foi verificado que as plantas podem apresentar algum tipo de efeito no processo embrionário, portanto, o consumo durante o estado gravidico deve ser avaliado por um profissional da área. Dinucleoside polyphosphates (NpnNs), discovered more than 50 years ago,1 are pleiotropic molecules present in almost all types of cells.2 It has been shown that their intracellular concentration can under stress conditions increase from the µM to mM range 2,3. However, the cellular roles and mechanisms of action of NpnNs are still speculative4,5. They have never been considered as part of the RNA, even though they have similar chemical structures as already known RNA caps, such as the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)6-8 and 7-methylguanylate cap9. Here, we show that both methylated and non-methylated Npn Ns serve as RNA caps in Escherichia coli (E. coli). NpnNs are excellent substrates for T7 and E. coli RNA polymerases (RNAP) and efficiently initiate transcription. Further, we demonstrate that the E. coli decapping enzyme RNA 5’ pyrophosphohydrolase (RppH) is able to remove the NpnNs-cap from the RNA. RppH was, however, not able to cleave the methylated forms of the NpnN-caps, suggesting that the methylation adds an additional layer to the RNA stability regulation. Our work introduces an original perspective on the chemical structure of RNA in prokaryotes and the function of RNA caps. This is the first evidence that small molecules like NpnNs can act in cells via their incorporation into RNA and influence the cellular metabolism.
