A ternary piezo-/ferroelectric crystal of PYN–PMN–PT (22/44/34) with dimensions of 26 × 26 × 10 mm3 has been grown by the TSSG method for the first time with a purpose of exploring new ferroelectric single crystals with high piezoelectric properties, and which was characterized by structural analysis and electrical measurements.

Single crystals of LiNa5Mo9O30 with seeds in the a-, b- and c-directions were successfully grown using the TSSG method. Full sets of dielectric, elastic and piezoelectric matrices of the crystal were determined first time. The octahedral distortion and dipole moment are calculated to explain the piezoelectric properties.

Abstract For the first time single crystals of trimolybdate were obtained through a slow trans-formation of the primary precipitate in a slightly acidified solution of rubidium molybdate at a temperature of 70 °C. A structural analysis of Rb2Mo3O10 · H2O revealed that the anion forms a chain with a hexameric identity period built up from MoO6 octahedra. Each Mo atom is bonded with two terminal oxygen atoms. The anion doesn't contain OH groups.

AbstractCeramics based on (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3 are promising candidates for actuator applications because of large strains generated by an electric field-induced phase transition. For example, the (1−x)(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-xSrTiO3 system exhibits a morphotropic phase boundary at x = 0.2–0.3, leading to high values of inverse piezoelectric constant d*33, which can be further improved by the use of single crystals. In our previous work, single crystals of (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-SrTiO3 and (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-CaTiO3 were grown by the solid state crystal growth technique. Growth in the (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-SrTiO3 system was sluggish whereas the (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-CaTiO3 single crystals grew well. In the present work, 0.8(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-0.2(Sr1−xCax)TiO3 single crystals (with x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) were produced by the solid state crystal growth technique in an attempt to improve crystal growth rate. The dependence of mean matrix grain size, single crystal growth distance, and electrical properties on the Ca concentration was investigated in detail. These investigations indicated that at x = 0.3 the matrix grain growth was suppressed and the driving force for single crystal growth was enhanced. Replacing Sr with Ca increased the shoulder temperature Ts and temperature of maximum relative permittivity Tmax, causing a decrease in inverse piezoelectric properties and a change from normal to incipient ferroelectric behavior.

AbstractSingle crystals and bicrystals of water ice have been adiabatically pressurized to produce, and clearly illustrate, two types of internal melt figures: (1) dendritic figures that grow from nucleation imperfections on the specimen’s surface, or from air bubbles at grain boundaries, into the ice as pressure is elevated; and (2) compression melt fractures, flat liquid-filled disks, that nucleate at imperfections in the crystal and grow with the application of pressure eventually to sprout dendritic fingers at the periphery. The transparency of the ice permitted visualization of the growth and behavior of the figures, and this could be an important tool in understanding the role of phase transformations in deep-focus earthquakes. Correlation between figure size and pressure is noted for the first time.

c-axis micro-bridges of La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 ( LSCO ) single crystals were fabricated by the focused-ion-beam (FIB) etching method. Small rectangular LSCO pieces were fabricated by cutting and grinding single crystals of underdoped LSCO of x=0.09. The size of LSCO single crystals between electrodes was cut to 20×40μm2 in ab-plane by using the FIB etching method. Superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) like-branch structures on I-V curves of the LSCO stacks were observed for the first time. The branch structures exhibited voltage jumps of several tens mV in the range of from 1.7 K to 5 K with temperature dependence. When the temperature is changed from 5 K to 1.7 K , the critical current and the next branch split into a few of small voltage jumps with the intervals of several mV in the range of from 0.1 mV and 2.0 mV .

Selective C-formylation of 8,9,10,11-tetrahydropyrido[2′,3′:4,5]pyrimido[1,2-a]-azepin-5(7H)-one has been studied for the first time. It was revealed that formylation proceeds by the formation of an intermediate salt, which due to the re-amination process on treatment with aqueous ammonia transformed into the corresponding (E)-11-(aminomethylene)-8,9,10,11-tetrahydropyrido[2′,3′:4,5]-pyrimido[1,2-a]azepin-5(7H)-one, C13H14N4O, as anE-isomer. Formylation was carried out by Vilsmeier–Haack reagent and the structure of the synthesized compound was confirmed by X-ray structural analysis, spectroscopic and LC–MS methods. In the molecule, the seven-membered pentamethylene ring adopts a twist-boat conformation.
