In 1980 Chevron recorded a three‐component seismic line using vertical (V) and transverse (T) motion vibrators over the Putah sink gas field near Davis, California. The purpose was to record the total vector motion of the various reflection types excited by the two sources, with emphasis on converted P‐S reflections. Analysis of the conventional reflection data agreed with results from the Conoco Shear Wave Group Shoot of 1977–1978. For example, the P‐P wave section had gas‐sand bright spots which were absent in the S‐S wave section. Shot profiles from the V vibrators showed strong P‐S converted wave events on the horizontal radial component (R) as expected. To our surprise, shot records from the T vibrators showed S‐P converted wave events on the V component, with low amplitudes but high signal‐to‐noise (S/N) ratios. These S‐P events were likely products of split S‐waves generated in anisotropic subsurface media. Components of these downgoing waves in the plane of incidence were converted to P‐waves on reflection and arrived at receivers in a low‐noise time window ahead of the S‐S waves. The two types of converted waves (P‐S and S‐P) were first stacked by common midpoint (CMP). The unexpected S‐P section was lower in true amplitude but much higher in S/N ratio than the P‐S section. The Winters gas‐sand bright spot was missing on the converted wave sections, mimicking the S‐S reflectivity as expected. CRP gathers were formed by rebinning data by a simple ray‐tracing formula based on the asymmetry of raypaths. CRP stacking improved P‐S and S‐P event resolution relative to CMP stacking and laterally aligned structural features with their counterparts on P and S sections. Thus, the unexpected S‐P data provided us with an extra check for our converted wave data processing.

Until recently, structure determination by transmission electron microscopy of beam-sensitive three-dimensional nanocrystals required electron diffraction tomography data collection at liquid-nitrogen temperature, in order to reduce radiation damage. Here it is shown that the novel Timepix detector combines a high dynamic range with a very high signal-to-noise ratio and single-electron sensitivity, enablingab initiophasing of beam-sensitive organic compounds. Low-dose electron diffraction data (∼0.013 e− Å−2 s−1) were collected at room temperature with the rotation method. It was ascertained that the data were of sufficient quality for structure solution using direct methods using software developed for X-ray crystallography (XDS,SHELX) and for electron crystallography (ADT3D/PETS,SIR2014).

Flower-like LLM-105 three-dimensional microstructures, which consisted of LLM-105 microrods with rectangular cross-sections, were prepared via a smiple template- and surfactant-free recrystallization process using [Bmim]CF3SO3as good solvent and water as poor solvent. A tentative mechanism for the growth of the flower-like LLM-105 three-dimensional microstructures was proposed on the basis of the analysis of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Comparing with LLM-105 raw material, the thermal decomposition took place at lower temperature and the weight loss has increased for the flower-like three-dimensional microstructures in the differential scanning calorimetric/thermogravimetric (DSC/TG) measurements.

Control valves have always been recognised as being among the most crucial control equipment, commonly utilised in versatile engineering applications. Hence, the need has arisen to identify the flow characteristics inside the valve, together with the incurred vibration induced as a result of the flow passing through the valve. Thanks to the tangible and fast progress made in the field of the flow simulation and numerical techniques, it has become possible to better observe the behavior of the flow passing inside a valve with view to examining its performance. Hence, the paper at hand is mainly concerned with introducing the modeling and simulation of a control valve. On the contrary, the flow system in a control valve is marked by a complex structure and nonlinear characteristics. The reasons for those qualities could be attributed to its construction as well as the fluid flow phenomena associated with it. It is especially for the sake of investigating and observing the flow characteristics, pertaining to a control valve equipped with different concave plug shapes and different openings, that the three-dimensional FSI simulation is conducted. In addition, it would be possible to make use of the obtained results relating to the three-dimensional analysis to achieve low noise and high efficiency improvement. Furthermore, all results will be validated on experimental grounds.

The exceptional brightness of SN1987A provided a wealth of opportunities for probing not only the interstellar medium in our Galaxy and in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), but also any intergalactic matter between the two. Spectroscopic work has been directed both towards searches for very weak absorption lines, which require data of exceptionally high signal-to-noise ratio, and towards recording spectra of known features at unprecedentedly high resolution. Both approaches have yielded exciting and unexpected results. The first detection of [FeX] absorption has revealed the presence of million-degree gas in the interstellar medium of the LMC, possibly resulting from the explosions of previous supernovae in the 30-Doradus HII region. The ultra-high-resolution observations have been successful in resolving the hyperfine structure of the sodium D lines in several interstellar clouds along the line of sight to the supernova. This implies that the clouds are at temperatures of, at most, 170 K and have internal turbulent velocities of not more than 0.2 km s−1; large-scale motions thus appear to be mainly subsonic in these clouds. Radio observations of HI emission at 21-cm with the Parkes telescope have been combined with measurements of a variety of ultraviolet absorption lines, obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite, to give the most detailed picture yet of the chemical composition of the gas between the Galaxy and the LMC. Finally, photographic monitoring of the light echo of SN 1987A over the last two years has provided a three-dimensional view of the interstellar environment in which SN 1987A exploded, complementing vividly the information deduced from the spectroscopic results.

Background Gray matter lesions are known to be common in multiple sclerosis (MS) and are suspected to play an important role in disease progression and clinical disability. A combination of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, double-inversion recovery (DIR), and phase-sensitive inversion recovery (PSIR), has been used for detection and classification of cortical lesions. This study shows that high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition with gradient echo (MPRAGE) improves the classification of cortical lesions by allowing more accurate anatomic localization of lesion morphology. Methods 11 patients with MS with previously identified cortical lesions were scanned using DIR, PSIR, and 3D MPRAGE. Lesions were identified on DIR and PSIR and classified as purely intracortical or mixed. MPRAGE images were then examined, and lesions were re-classified based on the new information. Results The high signal-to-noise ratio, fine anatomic detail, and clear gray-white matter tissue contrast seen in the MPRAGE images provided superior delineation of lesion borders and surrounding gray-white matter junction, improving classification accuracy. 119 lesions were identified as either intracortical or mixed on DIR/PSIR. In 89 cases, MPRAGE confirmed the classification by DIR/PSIR. In 30 cases, MPRAGE overturned the original classification. Conclusion Improved classification of cortical lesions was realized by inclusion of high-spatial resolution 3D MPRAGE. This sequence provides unique detail on lesion morphology that is necessary for accurate classification.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate three-dimensional (3D) T2 MRI before and after vaginal opacification (VO) by gel (3DT2VO) and the additional value of 3DT1 with fat-suppression (3DT1FS) MRI in the diagnosis of vaginal endometriosis.Methods: In this study conducted from 2010 to 2013, 51 patients scheduled for surgical treatment of endometriosis underwent MRI 1 day before surgery. Three readers (novice, intermediate, expert) were asked to retrospectively diagnose vaginal endometriosis independently and blindly using four different readings (i.e., 3DT2, 3DT2VO, 3DT2 with 3DT1FS, 3DT2VO with 3DT1FS). Vaginal endometriosis diagnosis was positive on observation of a thickening of vaginal walls on 3DT2 with or without high-signal-intensity spots on 3DT2 and/or 3DT1FS. The reference standard was surgery and histology. Descriptive analysis, Chi-square test, and ROC curves were used for statistical analysis.Results: For all readers, the combination of 3DT2 and 3DT1FS significantly improved the diagnosis of vaginal endometriosis compared with 3DT2 (p = 0.002, p = 0.02, and p = 0.003). 3DT2VO significantly improved diagnosis for the intermediate reader (p = 0.01). High-signal-intensity spots on 3DT1FS had a sensitivity of 50–63.6%, specificity of 86.2–96.6%, and high positive likelihood ratios (14.5-Inf).Conclusion: 3DT2 in association with 3DT1FS appears to be the best 3D MRI protocol for the diagnosis of vaginal endometriosis, whatever the level of experience of readers. The additional value of 3DT2VO is variable among the readers.

In this work we analyzed the radiation hardness of SiC p+n diodes after very high 1 MeV neutron fluence. The diode structure is based on a p+ emitter ion implanted in n-type epilayer with thickness equal to 5 %m and donor doping ND = 3×1015 cm-3. Before irradiation, the average leakage current density at 100 V reverse bias was of the order of 3 nA/cm2. These devices were irradiated at four different fluence values, logarithmically distributed in the range 1014-1016 (1 MeV) neutrons/cm2. After irradiation the epilayer material became more resistive, as indicated by the reduction of the forward and reverse current density at a given voltage. In particular, after a neutron fluence of 1×1014 n/cm2 the epilayer active doping concentration decreased to 1.5×1015 cm-3. After irradiation at 1016 n/cm2, i.e. the highest fluence value, the average leakage current density at 100 V reverse bias decreased to values of the order of 0.1 nA/cm2. This very low noise even after very high fluence is very important to obtain a high signal to noise ratio even at room temperature.
