In this study, the effect of SBR concentration (10 Phr, 20 Phr & 30 Phr ) on the thermal behavior of EPDM/SBR blends was studied. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to check weight loss of samples as function of temperature by heating upto 600°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed to determine quality and % crystallinity of the elastomer blends. It was seen that % crystallinity improved with an increase in the content of SBR in EPDM/SBR blends. TGA revealed that the thermal stability of EPDM/SBR blends has improved by 17% than neat EPDM. Carbon nano-coatings produced by sputtering have no beneficial influence on thermal behaviour of elastomers.

Reduced graphene oxide (RGEO) and N-[4-(chlorocarbonyl)phenyl]maleimide-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (MFRGEO) were used as nanofillers for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix nanocomposites to enhance thermal stability. Methyl methacrylate containing nanofiller of four different weight percent (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8) was polymerized using ultrasonic radiation-assisted bulk polymerization. The Fourier-transform infrared spectra showed the absence of chemical interaction between the filler and the matrix phase. Morphology of nanocomposites studied using scanning electron microscope confirmed the assistance aided by ultrasonication in the uniform dispersion of nanofiller in the PMMA matrix. Thermogravimetric (TG) study revealed the presence of MFRGEO enhanced the thermal stability of PMMA by shifting the entire degradation to higher temperature. The thermal stability of PMMA nanocomposite was improved by as much as 40°C at just 0.8 wt% loading of MFRGEO. Differential TG study also supported the role of maleimide functionalization on RGEO in the enhancement of thermal stability of PMMA by means of retarding the degradation rate of unsaturated chain ends in the PMMA matrix. Unlike MFRGEO, RGEO failed to enhance the thermal stability of PMMA.

Thermal stability is a limiting factor for effective application of D-psicose 3-epimerase (DPEase) enzyme. Recently, it was reported that the thermal stability of DPEase was improved by immobilizing enzymes on graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles. However, the detailed mechanism is not known. In this study, we investigated interaction details between GO and DPEase by performing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results indicated that the domain (K248 to D268) of DPEase was an important anchor for immobilizing DPEase on GO surface. Moreover, the strong interactions between DPEase and GO can prevent loop α1′-α1 and β4-α4 of DPEase from the drastic fluctuation. Since these two loops contained active site residues, the geometry of the active pocket of the enzyme remained stable at high temperature after the DPEase was immobilized by GO, which facilitated efficient catalytic activity of the enzyme. Our research provided a detailed mechanism for the interaction between GO and DPEase at the nano–biology interface.

Using in situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, the thermal behavior of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, and 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PTES) monolayers on SiO2 substrates has been investigated. OTS is thermally stable up to 573 K with vacuum annealing, whereas PTES starts decomposing at a moderate temperature between 373 K and 423 K. Vacuum annealing results in the decomposition of CF3 and CF2 species rather than desorption of the entire PTES molecule. In addition, our UPS results reveal that the work function (WF)of OTS remains the same after annealing; however WF of PTES decreases from ~5.62 eV to ~5.16 eV after annealing at 573 K.
