ABSTRACTTough and responsive hydrogels have recently attracted great research interests for potential applications in artifical muscles, soft robotics, and actuators, etc. This paper overviews our recent progresses in the design and synthesis of hydrogels with very high strength and toughness, and actuators based on these hydrogels. Inorganic nanospheres, nanorods, and nanosheets are exploited as multi-functional crosslinkers to adsorb or bond with hydrophilic chains, leading to hydrogels with very high strength, toughness, fatigue resistance, and/or self-healing. Introduction of functional groups including ionic monomers and amino groups results in hydrogels reponsive to pH, ionic strength and electric field. Besides, ionoprinting has been used to change local crosslink density based on reversible chelating/decomposition of metal ions with functional groups. This process is rapid and thus enables reversible and rapid actuation of hydrogel devices. Our studies will further aim to develop sophiscated devices by assembling hydrogel actuators.

AbstractAiry beams exhibit intriguing properties such as nonspreading, self-bending, and self-healing and have attracted considerable recent interest because of their many potential applications in photonics, such as to beam focusing, light-sheet microscopy, and biomedical imaging. However, previous approaches to generate Airy beams using photonic structures have suffered from severe chromatic problems arising from strong frequency dispersion of the scatterers. Here, we design and fabricate a metasurface composed of silicon posts for the frequency range 0.4–0.8 THz in transmission mode, and we experimentally demonstrate achromatic Airy beams exhibiting autofocusing properties. We further show numerically that a generated achromatic Airy-beam-based metalens exhibits self-healing properties that are immune to scattering by particles and that it also possesses a larger depth of focus than a traditional metalens. Our results pave the way to the realization of flat photonic devices for applications to noninvasive biomedical imaging and light-sheet microscopy, and we provide a numerical demonstration of a device protocol.

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) isolated from plant biomass have attracted considerable interests in polymer engineering. The limitations associated with CNF-based nanocomposites are often linked to the time-consuming preparation methods and lack of desired surface functionalities. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of preparing a multifunctional CNF-zinc oxide (CNF-ZnO) nanocomposite with dual antibacterial and reinforcing properties via a facile and efficient ultrasound route. We characterized and examined the antibacterial and mechanical reinforcement performances of our ultrasonically induced nanocomposite. Based on our electron microscopy analyses, the ZnO deposited onto the nanofibrous network had a flake-like morphology with particle sizes ranging between 21 to 34 nm. pH levels between 8–10 led to the formation of ultrafine ZnO particles with a uniform size distribution. The resultant CNF-ZnO composite showed improved thermal stability compared to pure CNF. The composite showed potent inhibitory activities against Gram-positive (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) and Gram-negative Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) bacteria. A CNF-ZnO-reinforced natural rubber (NR/CNF-ZnO) composite film, which was produced via latex mixing and casting methods, exhibited up to 42% improvement in tensile strength compared with the neat NR. The findings of this study suggest that ultrasonically-synthesized palm CNF-ZnO nanocomposites could find potential applications in the biomedical field and in the development of high strength rubber composites.

Carbon nanomaterials have recently attracted wide scientific applications due to their tunable properties. These novel materials act as best fillers that can provide substantial benefits due to their high strength, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivities. With their huge applications as bulk materials, when implemented in polymer matrix as fillers, they give rise to new promising materials with which their properties can be tuned to suit a particular application. Besides the development of these new nanocomposite materials, there exist some challenges which must be fully surpassed to explore the potentiality of application of carbon-based nanocomposites. Reduced graphene oxide is one of the carbon derivatives which has attracted the current advancement in technology, and recently, it found its new applications in super capacitors used in electronic industries. The limiting factor for its exploration is the affordability. New and affordable sources of these graphene-based nanomaterial have to be devised, for fully realization of their potential applications. In this study, reduced graphene oxide and the bio-polymer chitosan were extracted from the locally available bio waste materials. Nanocomposites were prepared at 50% rGO: chitosan ratio. The films were then prepared by spin coating method. Prepared films were subjected to morphological analysis. From the results, it was observed that rGO induced chitosan crystallization, which led to formation of dendritic structures. Cellulose nanocrystals have thus displayed temperature dependent positive uniaxial birefringence
