Operationalizing Culturally Responsive Research Practices: Documenting the Communication Skills of Children With Confirmed or Possible Exposure to the Zika Virus in Saint Lucia, West Indies

Purpose The purpose of this study is to describe a culturally responsive research investigation of communication and interaction skills in Saint Lucian children impacted by the Zika virus (ZIKV). Method Both quantitative and qualitative data collection strategies that align with positivist and interpretivist strategies were used to gain knowledge about communication and interaction development in a cohort of children impacted by ZIKV in Saint Lucia. Thirty participants received a neurodevelopmental assessment, which included a medical assessment, caregiver interview, participant observation, and data collection using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development–Third Edition. Twenty-six participants in the cohort received a communication and interaction assessment, which included a caregiver interview, participant observation, and data collection using the Rossetti Infant–Toddler Language Scale. Results Approximately half of our cohort demonstrated typical neurodevelopment, including typical communication and interaction skills, and half demonstrated delays in neurodevelopmental domains, including communication and interaction. Qualitatively, parents expressed a need for resources about mental health, emotional well-being, financial assistance, and peer support. Conclusions There is a continued need to create knowledge about the impact of ZIKV on communication and interaction development in children worldwide. Moreover, culturally responsive research components should be included in research training programs in communication sciences and disorders.

Literacy is one of the abilities that are considered important in facing the 21st-century world. The distinctive character of the 21st-century world is the industrial revolution of 4.0. The impact of the industrial revolution 4.0 has been felt by anyone in every aspect of life, including aspects of education. The low condition of Indonesia's digital literacy capability must be overcome immediately. For this reason, this study aims to propose a thesis on the concept of digital literacy based on value of local wisdom piil pesenggiri in learning history in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0. Local wisdom piil pesenggiri is the behavior and outlook on life of Lampung people who are still held firm to this day. It is hoped that through this strategy the historical awareness of the students at Public High School 2 Kalianda in Lampung Province will increase amidst the current of Industrial Revolution 4.0. This study used qualitative research methods. Data collection was conducted in January and February 2020 with natural conditions, primary data sources and more data collection techniques in participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that there must be a change in conventional history learning resources to a digital history book that can understand current students without losing their cultural identity.

Purpose Considering the case study presented, the purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of the pandemic in local services for homeless people. Drawing from the concept of ontological security, it will be discussed how different services’ levels of “housing adequacy” shaped remarkably different experiences of the pandemic for homeless people and social workers in terms of health protection and agency. Design/methodology/approach This paper focuses on a case study concerning homeless services for people during the COVID-19 pandemic in the metropolitan and suburban area of Turin, in Northern Italy. In-depth interviews with social workers and participant observation during online meetings of workers from the shelters constitute the empirical data that have been collected during the first wave of the pandemic in Italy. Findings According to the findings, the pandemic showed shelters as unsafe places that reduce homeless people’s decision power and separate them from the rest of the citizenship. Instead, Housing First projects emerged as imore inclusive and safermore inclusive and safer spaces, able to enhance people’s power over their own lives. The pandemic did not create emerging issues in the homeless services system or discontinuities: rather, it amplified pre-existing problematic aspects. Originality/value The case study presented provides empirical insights to recognise at the political and organisational level the importance of housing as a measure of individual and collective security, calling for an intervention to tackle homelessness in terms of housing policies rather than exclusively social and emergency treatment.

Introduction: While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected many aspects of clinical care, research, and medical training, its impact on hematology-oncology trainees and professional development has not been described. The American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) sought to assess the impact of COVID-19 on fellows enrolled in hematology-oncology programs. Methods: In spring 2020, ASH and ASCO developed and administered a survey by e-mail to active hematology-oncology fellow members. Response formats used both a semi-Likert scale and open-ended text. Questions focused on fellow experiences and how changes in their programs have impacted their personal and professional lives across several domains. Multiple-choice responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and NVivo software was used for qualitative analysis of open-ended questions. Results: Respondent demographics are described in Table 1. Of 2,306 trainees, 620 (27%) responded to the survey. Most respondents continued patient care responsibilities during the pandemic (80%). Almost half of all trainees (47%) reported that they felt less productive than usual. Stress and/or anxiety about the current situation was the most cited factor affecting productivity in the overall cohort (Figure 1). One-third (33%) of respondents had volunteered or were assigned to clinical/non-clinical COVID-19-related efforts. Of the 90 visa holders in our cohort, 30% (N=27) reported experiencing issues with their visa/immigration status. Eight percent of respondents stated their career plans had changed due to COVID-19. Of those who said their plans had changed, 30 respondents were considering careers in academia pre-pandemic and 11 were considering private practice. However, only 14 respondents were considering academia post-pandemic while 19 were interested in private practice. Overall, most respondents had concerns about at least one of the following: salary reductions, availability of networking events, family well-being, mental health and obtaining a job (Figure 2). The prevalence of burnout increased from 22% (N=105) before the pandemic to 33% (N=161) during (p<.001). Of the respondents who did not report burnout before COVID-19, 22% noted new-onset burnout during the pandemic. New-onset burnout prevalence varied based on the type of work respondents performed: no COVID-related work (17%), COVID-related non-clinical work (26%), and COVID-related clinical work (34%) (p<0.01). The open-ended responses yielded several consistent themes. Clinical and educational constraints were enumerated: lost learning opportunities due to low patient volumes, unavailability of colleagues to discuss cases, and overall low perceived quality of virtual learning. Trainees also reported reduced motivation to complete work within a stipulated time frame due to lack of robust discussions in the virtual environment and technological challenges in navigating educational resources. Trainee research was also severely impacted as laboratories closed, experimental animal colonies were lost, and many research activities ceased. Respondents also expressed concern that cuts in research training initiatives and budgets would jeopardize faculty positions for graduating fellows and that funding for travel and conferences was suspended. Fellows' recommendations for ASH and ASCO included improved online education, virtual research training and networking opportunities, practical guidance on caring for immune-compromised patients during the pandemic, increased funding resources for trainees, mental health resources, and advocating on behalf of trainee visa holders. Conclusions: Hematology-oncology trainees reported their training experiences have been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A majority of trainees are concerned about the negative impact on career opportunities, research funding, financial well-being, and mental health. Burnout increased during COVID-19, especially in trainees who were assigned to specific COVID-related efforts. Training programs and professional societies can support trainees by increasing trainee research funding, online networking and learning opportunities, mental health resources and, support for international trainees. A brief follow on report (from Report 1, see https://psyarxiv.com/uq4rn/). This report presents data on parents and their children's well being as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic from our adult survey study. In addition to presenting additional data showing a potentially significant increase in anxiety and depression in young people aged 13-24, as a consequence of COVID-19. Data collection for our Adult Study (Wave 2) took place between 22nd April and was ended on Friday, May 1st, here we report headline figures for the impact of Covid-19 on parents and their children. We have described our methods in a separate report (https://psyarxiv.com/wxe2n) and released two reports on our mental health outcomes from wave 1 (https://psyarxiv.com/hb6nq, https://psyarxiv.com/ydvc7).

Purpose This paper aims to provide a longitudinal study of a five-day tourist stay in a mountain resort, where flow and immersion are analysed to understand how consumers experience and construct their holiday stay. The need to process to a longitudinal study is motivated by the lack of research looking at what actually happens during the experience. More precisely, the long encounter of a holiday is often disregarded, and the tourist experience is studied afterwards through single and comprehensive satisfaction surveys. How consumers evolve across a holiday stay and construct their experience is an understanding that needs further investigations. Among the variety of concepts developed to study the experience, flow and immersion are particularly interesting foundations, as they bring a detailed analysis of the processes at the very heart of the experience. This study aims to identify how both these concepts develop within a holiday context and what strategic knowledge might be gained from their analysis. A qualitative study conducted on a sample of ten individuals interviewed every day of their stay provides curves showing the occurrences of flow episodes. More importantly, the study looks at the evolution of flow and immersion across each day of a holiday stay: it identifies the conditions of their emergence, their recurrence and how they influence each other. Managerial implications call for a more strategic analysis of the specific components that conduct to the emergence of flow and immersion. Design/methodology/approach The paper conducts a longitudinal study of a tourist stay over five days. Ten participants were interviewed while on holiday and upon their return with a semi-structured interview guide aiming to investigate the peaks of their day, the elements associated to those events and the meaning associated to them. Immersion was also investigated. Forty-eight interviews were conducted in the resort. Data were transcribed and content analysed to identify the main components of both flow and immersion concepts specifically in the case of a tourist holiday. Findings The findings identified that both flow and immersion co-exist and feed each other during the holiday. Episodes of flow could be identified, although they did not necessarily match all the characteristics previously identified by Csikszentmihalyi. The events associated to flow were to be found in sport activities (skiing and snow shoeing), but social cohesion and landscape beauty equally provided strong flow episodes. Immersion is a more longitudinal state that reinforces itself throughout the stay, and with flow occurrences. Immersion is strongly related to the feeling of detachment and “getting away from it all”. Research limitations/implications The mountain resort setting is unique, but the results show some commonalities with previous research. If the ski experience is specific, it does share commonalities with other sport activities that could be provided in other holiday settings. However, transferability to more mundane holiday settings requires further testing. The data collection process is particularly heavy: interviewing the same customer every day is necessarily time-consuming. The sample is composed of senior students and would need to be validated on a wider sample of tourists. Practical implications The results identify some of the components that contribute to the emergence of both flow and immersion. The elements identified, whether they are associated to the skiing activity, to the social network or the natural resources of the resort, can all be encouraged and monitored by the resort. The results give pointers to the different elements that tourism actors can act upon to boost their consumers experience. Social implications Skiing is a sport practice that is mostly represented in middle to higher social classes. The cost of skiing equipment and ski passes, but also the need to acquire competences for this activity are all limitations factors to a wider spread of skiing practice in the general population. By showing the impact of a ski stay, notably by its incredible capacity to create a feeling of detachment and restoration from every day life, the results point to the general well-being impact that mountain holiday stays can create. It is also an information that interests local authorities who are witnessing a maturity of the ski market and are looking for new communication arguments to boost the attraction of ski holidays. The role of previous experience as a booster to immersion also demonstrates the usefulness of childhood skiing practice. This can be encouraged and subsidised by regional authorities, especially through schools. Originality/value The originality of the paper is tied in with its data collection. The researchers opted for a longitudinal study of real-time experience by not only interviewing participants in situ but also every day of their experience. Those data provide a longitudinal analysis of the experience, with richer results than what traditional satisfaction surveys usually measure. The study is also original through the concepts used: flow has been used extensively by researchers but rarely to study a whole holiday experience. Moreover, the concept of immersion is a newer concept that has not yet been used to investigate the tourist experience. The results of the study show that this concept is different from flow and is particularly pertinent to study the holiday experience.

In all areas of knowledge, research has shown the devastating effects of COVID-19, and the impact on families’ financial stress and well-being is one of them. Crises are predictors of families’ financial stress as they produce changes in their income and negative feelings, such as fear and demotivation, which affect well-being. This study analyses the financial and social impact of COVID-19 on families, supported by the ABCE-WB model, with data collection being the result of snowball sampling. The results obtained allow the conclusion that the current pandemic crisis has caused financial stress in families, to a greater or lesser degree, and caused feelings of fear and demotivation as consequences of the general lockdown. The empirical evidence also shows that these effects are positively associated with the perception of their level of well-being. The contribution of the study lies in corroborating the model used. Final considerations are presented together with the limitations and suggestions for future research.

The quality of education is a pillar of human resource development which is very important for national development. The child friendly school program is one of the efforts made to improve the quality of madrasas. This research is important because so far, the quality of education has been studied only on aspects of learning related to the academic field which have an impact on certain aspects. The purpose of this study was to find out and understand the strategy in improving the quality of education in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 3 Jombang through the child friendly school program based on Adiwiyata. In addition, to find out the impact or implication of the implementation of the child friendly school program on the quality of education. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data collection techniques were carried out by means of in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The data analysis was carried out with the process of data collection, data coding, data classification, data reduction, and data exposure. The results showed that the strategy carried out included several stages, namely: Formation of the implementing team for child friendly school, Conducting program socialization, Fostering human resources (teachers and staff), Building collaboration, Fulfilling indicators for child friendly school components, Carrying out monitoring and evaluation processes, and Responsive to inputs for the improvement of the child friendly school program. The implications of the program on the quality of education are seen in three aspects, namely teachers, students and institution.

Globally, aging individuals who live independently facing various problems in maintaining their health and well-being. Understanding the capability of personal well-being is an important consideration in promoting healthy behaviors and lifestyles in aging individuals. This paper aimed to more deeply explore, from self-care experiences of aging individuals living independently in the community, from their perspective. The study used the inductive approach of focused ethnography which is based on Orem’s Theory of Self-Care. Data collection consisted of participant observation with field notes and semi-structured interviews with 25 aging individuals living independently in the northern part of Thailand. Three themes were followed as protocol of the data collection plan and used the identification and classification of transcription, coding, and thematic analysis as perspectives of self-care experiences of aging individuals living independently in the community setting: 1) continuing habits of healthcare practices, 2) maintaining positive emotional adaptation, 3) and having reasonable social and life adjustments. These themes exemplified the practice of activities that aging individuals initiated and performed as their daily and routine activities with the intention of maintaining life health and well-being. Consideration of aging individuals living independently self-care experiences assisted nurses and provided greater perspectives in providing actual needs and reduced resources of nursing care and healthcare system.

This article examines the impact of culturally responsive pedagogy in an introduction to university course developed in collaboration with local and place-based First Nations communities, Aboriginal Access Studies and the Faculty of Education of the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus. In keeping with requests that Indigenous worldviews be incorporated into curriculum, the content of EDUC 104, modelled on the University of South Carolina’s University 101 Programs, was adapted to incorporate Indigenous traditions of teaching and learning. The introductory course included a holistic approach aimed at supporting the social and emotional well-being of students. Facilitated by peer mentoring, collaborative circles of learning introduced seminal concepts and facilitated the progressive use of newly learned skills. As part of a longitudinal research, the following presents the content of interviews conducted at the conclusion of the courses. Analysis indicated that three themes emerged emphasizing the importance of the circles of learning, peer mentoring, and the relationship with the instructor. In particular, the results demonstrated the perceived value of the course from the students’ perspectives.
