Chionobas.—To hear of the occurence of Chionobas Macounii in the hill-prairie district south of Calgary will doubtless be as much of a surprise to most entomologists as the discovery of it here has been to myself. That a man who, like myself, is ever on the outlook for anything fresh in the way of butterflies, should have lived for five years in Macounii locality without knowing it surpasses my comprehension. whilst overhauling, relaxing, and setting last winter from the captures of the past two seasons, I came across, amongst some papered specimens that had been handed to me by a Mr. Hudson, an ardent collector here, a papered butterfly labelled “Chionobas Chryxus, ♀, July 4th 1896,” taken amongst the spruce about twelve miles west of here; that is to say, about 26 miles to the south-west of Calgary. Now, though I have never yet seen Chryxus here, I have always been expecting to come across it amongst the spruce, and was not much surprised. However, after relaxing and setting me specimen, lo and behold! it was not Chryxus, but agreed rather closely with some C. californica♂ ♂ that I have from Ft. Klamoth, Oregon.

AbstractAn unusual opportunity for the study of glaciers in the process of development is afforded in Katmaicaldera in south-western Alaska. A violent eruption in 1912 destroyed the summit of glacier-clad Mount Katmai, creating a caldera 4 km. wide and 800 m. deep. Ice cliffs produced by beheading of the glaciers have since thinned and shrunk away from the rim of the caldera, except in the south-west. There, local reversal of direction of movement has resulted in an ice fall which descends part way down the crater wall. In the past thirty years two small glaciers have formed, near 1525 m. above sea level, within the caldera on large masses of slumped wall-rock below the north and south rims respectively. Elsewhere the sheer walls of the crater descend so steeply to the level of the caldera lake that permanent snowbanks cannot accumulate. The lake, which continues to rise at a rate of more than five meters per year, is at present the primary deterring factor in glacier development in the caldera.

Precision medicine has brought new hopes for patients around the world with the applications of novel technologies for understanding genetics of complex diseases and their translation into clinical services. Such applications however require a foundation of skills, knowledge and infrastructure to translate genetics for health care. The crucial element is no doubt the availability of genomics data for the target populations, which is seriously lacking for most parts of Africa. We discuss here why it is vital to prioritize genomics data for the South West Indian Ocean region where a mosaic of ethnicities co-exist. The islands of the SWIO, which comprise Madagascar, La Reunion, Mauritius, Seychelles and Comoros, have been the scene for major explorations and trade since the 17th century being on the route to Asia. This part of the world has lived through active passage of slaves from East Africa to Arabia and further. Today’s demography of the islands is a diverse mix of ancestries including European, African and Asian. The extent of admixtures has yet to be resolved. Except for a few studies in Madagascar, there is very little published data on human genetics for these countries. Isolation and small population sizes have likely resulted in reduced genetic variation and possible founder effects. There is a significant prevalence of diabetes, particularly in individuals of Indian descent, while breast and prostate cancers are on the rise. The island of La Reunion is a French overseas territory with a high standard of health care and close ties to Mauritius. Its demography is comparable to that of Mauritius but with a predominantly mixed population and a smaller proportion of people of Indian descent. On the other hand, Madagascar’s African descendants inhabit mostly the lower coastal zones of the West and South regions, while the upper highlands are occupied by peoples of mixed African-Indonesian ancestries. Historical records confirm the Austronesian contribution to the Madagascar genomes. With the rapid progress in genomic medicine, there is a growing demand for sequencing services in the clinical settings to explore the incidence of variants in candidate disease genes and other markers. Genome sequence data has become a priority in order to understand the population sub-structures and to identify specific pathogenic variants among the different groups of inhabitants on the islands. Genomic data is increasingly being used to advise families at risk and propose diagnostic screening measures to enhance the success of therapies. This paper discusses the complexity of the islands’ populations and argues for the needs for genotyping and understanding the genetic factors associated with disease risks. The benefits to patients and improvement in health services through a concerted regional effort are depicted. Some private patients are having recourse to external facilities for molecular profiling with no return of data for research. Evidence of disease variants through sequencing represents a valuable source of medical data that can guide policy decisions at the national level. There are presently no such records for future implementation of strategies for genomic medicine.

The word Dir is derived from Sanskrit language, which means a place of worship or a monastery. The Greek would call Dir as "Goraaye". At some point in the past the word "yaghestᾱn" was used as the name for Dir, Bajaur and Gilgit areas. Dir is comprised of beautiful valleys in the high peaked Hamalyas mountains in the province of Khyber pakhtunkhwa. It was a princely state. It is bounded by Chitral to the northe west, swat to the east, Malakand to the south, Bajaur and Afghanistan to its south west. At the time of independence of Pakistan, the state of Dir was ruled by Nawab shah jehan. Dir was acceded to Pakistan in 1969. It was given the status of district in 1970 and in 1996 it was devided into two districts ,i.e lower and upper Dir. Dir has produced many renowned personalities in the politcs as well as in the religious field. This article belonges to the religious scholars ('ulamᾱ) of District Dir and their remarkable contributions in the field of Fiqa, specially in the Urdu language. Some of these scholars are; Maulana Abdul Ghani, Qazi wali Ur Rahman,Qazi Adusalam, Maulana Hzrat Said, Dr Izaz Ali, Shaikh Abdul haleem,Qazi Hazrat Mahmood,Mulana Abdullah and Mulana Zia Ul Haq. In this research paper introduction of the Ulamᾱ-e-Dir and their services of Fiqa in Urdu language have been mentioned which will help inculcate the readers their outlook and will be an advantageous adition to the research endeavors.

Spilopsyllus cuniculi, a vector of myxomatosis, was introduced by various methods at several sites in the south-west of Western Australia in May 1969 for the biological control of rabbits. It spread rapidly and within 14 months all rabbits collected within about 5 km of one of the release sites were infested with fleas. Further introductions of the flea during the past decade have resulted in a wide distribution for it throughout the south-west of the state. Flea numbers fluctuate seasonally and are highest in reproductively active female rabbits in winter and spring. Since the introductions of the flea, the timing of epizootics of myxomatosis has changed and their effect on rabbit populations has increased.

Calgary (altitude 3,400 ft.) is strictly a prairie city, situate at the junction of the Bow and Elbow rivers, about 40 or 50 miles from the true base of the Rocky Mountains. For several hundred miles to the east, the prairie is, with the exception of a few spots on river bottoms, absolutely void of either timber or scrub. A very few miles to the west the country becomes decidedly hilly, and in places densely covered witli dwarf willows. Still further west the hills increase in height, shrubs become proportionately more abundant, and several species of poplars make their appearance, the north and west sides of the hills being usually densely wooded. By far the greater portion of the material from which this list has been compiled has been taken by myself and Mr. A. Hudson during the past seven seasons amongst these hills (3,600-4,000 ft.) near the head of Pine Creek, about sixteen miles to the south-west of Calgary. This “hill-prairie,” as I will call it, and which may be looked upon as the boundary between the prairie and the foothills, is well watered by numerous creeks, and the valleys and hillsides—where not too steep—are largely grazed and cultivated, but otherwise splendid hunting grounds for the entomologist.
