A nuclear piping system which is found to be disqualified, i.e. overstressed, in design evaluation in accordance with ASME III, can still be qualified if further non-linear design requirements can be satisfied in refined non-linear analyses in which material plasticity and other non-linear conditions are taken into account. This paper attempts first to categorize the design verification according to ASME III into the linear design and non-linear design verifications. Thereafter, the corresponding design requirements, in particular, those non-linear design requirements, are reviewed and examined in detail. The emphasis is placed on our view on several formulations and design requirements in ASME III when applied to nuclear power piping systems that are currently under intensive study in Sweden.

This paper proposed a novel concept of active balancer for dynamic balancing of planar mechanisms. Somewhat similar to a vibration absorber, the active balancer is designed as an independent device, which is placed outside of the mechanism to be balanced and can be installed easily. It consists of a two degree-of-freedom (DOF) linkage with two input shafts, one of which is connected to the output shaft of the mechanism to be balanced by a joint coupling, and the other one is driven by a controllable motor. Flexible dynamic balancing adapted to different working conditions can be achieved by varying speed trajectories of the control motor actively. A design method is developed for selecting suitable speed trajectories and link parameters of the two DOF linkage of the balancer to meet various design requirements and constraints. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the design procedure and to verify the feasibility of the proposed concept.

Toskanes were developed as an alternative scour countermeasure where riprap is not feasible or available in large sizes. The Toskane design procedure is based on results of a hydraulic model study of several different piers and abutments. Toskanes can be fabricated in sizes to meet the design requirements. One example of installing Toskanes at a bridge with a pier and vertical abutments is presented. Criteria are provided to size the Toskane. Techniques for installation are suggested and costs for the project are estimated.

With the threat of global warming nowadays in the 21st century, the European Union has set the standard “Eco-Design Requirements for Energy-using Product(EuP)” for controlling the development of consumptive electronic machinery and products. Therefore, the trend of green design sees the instruction of EuP as the main direction for energy-saving. Considering the factors, undergoing the comprehensive evaluation and development process, the industry needs to draw up the corresponding design strategy in response to the new situation. Therefore, to optimize the green design strategy, the designers can replace hardware with the intelligent system to develop more optimal energy-saving products. Following the ecological instructions of energy-saving of EuP as direction, this study combined the advantage of the intelligent system and green design in order to optimize strategy of green design on intelligent energy-saving product under eco-design requirements for energy-using product (EuP). The evaluation factors were included in the strategies of intelligent energy-saving product design by analyzing the product users’ cognition, needs, habit and etc. Furthermore, through the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), the priority and the important factors of green design were analyzed. By examining the green design strategy on energy-using product, industry needs to think the energy-saving conditions and the key factors on deciding process. Eventually, the efficiency of product design for environment can be fulfilled successfully.

Conceptual design is a critical design phase during which initial design solutions, called design concepts, are developed. These design concepts must be evaluated to ensure they satisfy the specified design requirements and the most appropriate design concept must be selected. It is often difficult for the designer, especially for the novice, to make an appropriate design concept evaluation and selection. Existing work on design evaluation lacks an effective tool for evaluating the temporal performance of the design concepts. To address this problem, a Critical Path Method (CPM) from project management is adapted for design evaluation, whereby a CPM network is converted from a causal behavioral process (CBP) and the methodologies relating to CPM are also applied to design improvement. A case study of a lever-clamp assembly system is also presented to illustrate as well as validate the method.
