The polyphenolic of grape skins, pulps and seeds are potential source of natural antioxidant, which are receiving increased attention. In the present work, the total phenolics content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC), total flavanols content (TFAC), total anthocyanins content (TMAC) and antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS and FRAP) in different tissues of 4 table grapes cultivated in Chengdu plain, south of China, were investigated. In present study, expect TMAC was not be detected in seeds, and our results showed that seeds were the highest in polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity followed by skins, and then pulp. Besides, ‘Fenghou’ is richer in polyphenolic content than other three cultivars. Hence, ‘Fenghou’ extracts possesses higher free radical scavenging ability.

Red grapes are a better source of antioxidants. Although studies have reported the major antioxidant contents and activities of grape cultivars, but the literature lacks information on detailed antioxidant composition and capacities of grape cultivars grown with rain-shelter-cultivation in Chengdu plain, south of China. In the present study, the total phenolics content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC), total flavanols content (TFAC), total anthocyanins content (TMAC) and antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS and FRAP) were detected and the results will provide basic knowledge about antioxidants of six red skin grapes. The results indicated the content rank order as follow: seeds > skin > pulp. Furthermore, ‘Red Globe’, ‘Jintianmeizhi’ and ‘Hongbaladuo’ have more antioxidants than other cultivars. Our results will provide a basic theory basis for consumers and further utilization of antioxidants.

Nyctanthes arbour-tristis is a shrub belongs to the family Oleaceae. The flowers of this plant are fragrant since the presence of flavonol glycosides. It has also been reported for the presence of β-sitosterol, iridoid glycosides, tannins etc., and known to have immunostimulant, hepatoprotective, antiviral and antifungal activities. In the present study an attempt is made to identify antioxidant capacity and anthelminthic potential of methanolic flower extract of Nyctanthes arbour-tristis. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by total phenolic content assay, total flavonoids content assay, free radical scavenging activity and reducing ability methods. Anthelmintic activity was evaluated on Perithima posthuma using Piperazine citrate as standard drug. The results obtained for the above activities reveals that Nyctanthes arbour-tristis shows considerable antioxidant activity for all the methods and anthelminthic potential at 300 mg/ml. <p><strong>Objective: </strong>The objectives of this research were to evaluate and compare the antioxidant activity; phenolics and flavonoids contents; and chemical composition of some galactopoietic herbs used in Indonesia and to find a possible relationship between antioxidant activity; phenolics, flavonoids and chemical composition of these plants.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A wide range of analytical parameters was studied, including yield; pH; water activity (a<sub>w</sub>); total color difference; phenolics and flavonoids content; moisture; ash; protein; fat; carbohydrate; fiber; calcium; zinc; magnesium; potassium; iron content; and the data were analyzed by partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) to evaluate the correlation between the parameters and classification of the plants. Folin–cioceltaeu assay, aluminum chloride assay and DPPH scavenging assay were used to evaluate of total phenolics content and free radical scavenging activity of the ethanolic extract of galactopoietic herbs.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>All of the galactagogue herbs, <em>viz</em>. <em>Plectranthus amboinicus </em>(Lour.) (PA), <em>Sauropus androgynus</em> (SA), <em>Moringa oleifera</em> (MO), and <em>Carica papaya</em> leaves (CP) exhibited good results of TPC, TFC and antioxidant activity. MO contained the highest average of total phenolics content (53.89 mg GAE/g). SA with a ratio of total flavonoids to total phenolics (TF/TP) which is 1.59 contained the highest average of total flavonoids and antioxidant activity (IC<sub>50</sub>), 43.63 mg QE/g and 126.13 μg/ml, respectively, followed by MO&gt;CA&gt;PA. Based on PLS and PCA analysis, antioxidant activity correlated with fat, protein, phenolics content, flavonoids content and pH, but only the total flavonoids content correlated strongly with antioxidant activity.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>This provides useful data about the studied relationships and chemical patterns in some galactopoietic herbs used and provides a helpful tool for understanding much more about the interpretation of results from the experiments and the mechanism of biosynthesis in plants.</p>

Chitosan with 80% degree of deacetylation was hydrolyzed by cellulase of Trichoderma viride to prepare chitooligosaccharides (COSs) by the fractionation of the COSs with ultrafiltration membrane. The antioxidant activities of the COSs were clarified in this study by reducing power and free radical scavenging ability assay by UV-VIS absorption spectrum. The results show that the COS 1 (10,000-5,000 Da), COS 2 (5,000-3,000 Da), COS 3 (3,000-1,000 Da) and COS 4 (less than1,000 Da) segments have antioxidant properties.The antioxidant activitives of the COSs increased with the increment of concentration, and they also depended on molecular weight.

AbstractWe conducted this study to determine and compare the content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids in the argan and olive leaves as well as their antioxidant capacity in aqueous, methanolic, and ethyl acetate extracted fractions. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated in comparison with synthetic antioxidants by assessing DPPH• radical scavenging capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, scavenging ability by inhibiting the β-carotene/linoleic acid emulsion oxidation, and by the ABTS radical scavenging activity assay. Total phenolic content in argan samples ranged from 221.69 ± 2.07 to 1.32 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g DW and in olive samples from 144.61 ± 0.82 to 1.21 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g DW. Total flavonoids content in argan samples varied from 267.37 ± 1.12 to 25.48 ± 0.02 mg QE/g DW, while in olives from 96.06 ± 0.78 to 10.63 ± 0.05 mg QE/g DW. In vitro antioxidant studies strongly confirmed the antioxidant potency of argan and olive leaves and their richness in secondary metabolites that are effective in free radicals scavenging and metal chelating capacities, indicating their antioxidant power.

Red-fleshed apple (Malus sieversii f. neidzwetzkyana (Dieck) Langenf) has attracted more and more attention due to its enriched anthocyanins and high antioxidant activity. In this study we extracted total anthocyanins and phenols from two types of red-fleshed apples—Xinjing No.4 (XJ4) and Red Laiyang (RL)—to study the stability and antioxidant activity of anthocyanins after encapsulation onto Corn Starch Nanoparticles (CSNPs). The results indicated the anthocyanins and total phenol levels of XJ4 were 2.96 and 2.25 times higher than those of RL respectively. The anthocyanin concentration and loading time had a significant effect on CSNPs encapsulation, and XJ4 anthocyanins always showed significantly higher loading capacity than RL. After encapsulation, the morphology of RL-CSNPs and XJ4-CSNPs was still spherical with a smooth surface as CSNPs, but the particle size increased compared to CSNPs especially for RL-CSNPs. Different stress treatments including UV light, pH, temperature, and salinity suggested that XJ4-CSNPs exhibited consistently higher stability than RL-CSNPs. A significantly enhanced free radical scavenging rate under stress conditions was observed, and XJ4-CSNPs had stronger antioxidant activity than RL-CSNPs. Furthermore, XJ4-CSNPs exhibited a slower released rate than RL-CSNPs in simulated gastric (pH 2.0) and intestinal (pH 7.0) environments. Our research suggests that nanocrystallization of anthocyanins is an effective method to keep the anthocyanin ingredients intact and active while maintaining a slow release rate. Compared to RL, encapsulation of XJ4 anthocyanins has more advantages, which might be caused by the significant differences in the metabolites of XJ4. These findings give an insight into understanding the role of nanocrystallization using CSNPs in enhancing the antioxidant ability of anthocyanins from different types of red-fleshed apples, and provide theoretical foundations for red-fleshed apple anthocyanin application.

The increase in durian production results in the accumulation of durian peel waste. The bioactive component of durian peel has the potential to be used as an antioxidant. Thus, there is a need to carry out an extraction process to obtain  bioactive compounds from durian peel. However, conventional extraction methods cause damage to phenolic compounds due to oxidation, hydrolysis and ionization reactions during the extraction process. Therefore, durian peel extraction was carried out using ultrasonic assisted extraction method (UAE) in this study. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of varying ratios of durian peel to ethanol solvents and extraction time on the yield, total phenolics content, total flavonoids content and antioxidant activity. The results of the research data were analyzed using a two-factor completely randomized design, which included variations of the ratio of durian peel to ethanol solvents and extraction time The Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) was carried out as a follow up test to determine the differences in each treatment at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that the best treatment for peel extraction using ultrasonic assisted extraction was a 1: 9 ratio of durian peel to ethanol at an extraction time of 20 minutes. The extraction of durian peel under this condition gave the highest yield of 12.77 ± 0.16%, antioxidant activity (IC50) of 38.33 ± 0.12 ppm, total phenolic content of 63.30 ± 0.08 mgGAE / g and total flavonoids content of 47.53 ± 0.48 mgQE / g. In addition, total phenolics content and total flavonoid content showed a strong correlation to the antioxidant activity of durian peel extract.

Abstract This study aimed to characterize the physicochemical properties and stability of L-25 melanin extracted from Sporisorium reilianum (S. reiliana). The results showed that the maximum absorption wavelength of melanin was 215 nm. Reducing agents, heat, light, microwaving, oxidants, and common food additives did not affect the melanin. Additionally, it has a good metal stability except Mn2+. The IR spectra revealed the presence of O-H, N-H, C=O, and C=C bonds as well as carboxyl, alcohol hydroxyl, and phenolic hydroxyl groups and a pyran ring. L-25 melanin could be defined as DL-hydroxy phenylalanine (DOPA)-melanin. The antioxidant and antiproliferative were also measured. The melanin has a specific stability and high antioxidant activity, including a strong DPPH free radical scavenging ability, and protected damaged HepG2 cells by reducing reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and lactate dehydrogenase content. In conclusion, S. reilianum represents a novel source of melanin, that could be applied to health food or food additives. Our results show that melanin from S. reilianum is a natural pigment with good stability that has a great prospect of development and application, providing a theoretical basis and methods for its further processing and development as a functional food.

Leaf methanolic extracts of four wild Rose species (Rosa canina L., R. corymbifera Borkh., R. micrantha Borrer ex Sm and R. sempervirens L.) grown in Sicily were analysed in order to evaluate differences among indigenous roses which could be used such as source of bioactive compounds and natural antioxidants. Leaves were harvested during two different periods (June and October) and their morphological characteristics were described. Leaf content of chlorophylls, total anthocyanins, total flavonoids, total polyphenols (Folin-Ciocalteu method) and antioxidant activity (DPPH method) were determined. Results showed that the contents of chlorophylls and carotenoids were higher in leaves of all species harvested in June than in those harvested in October. On the contrary, total anthocyanins of R. micrantha and R. corymbifera leaves were higher in October. Total polyphenol content was higher in leaves of all species were harvested in October. No difference in total flavonoids content was recorded between the two harvest periods but only among the four species. Antioxidant activity was generally high in leaf extracts of all species in both periods and, particularly, in R. micrantha leaves harvested in June. These outcomes seem to support the assessment that leaves harvested from some Sicilian wild roses may be used as promising source of healthy compounds and that their content varies with the species and harvest period.

Background: Acridine and quinoline derivatives have a wide range of biological activities such as antioxidant and antitumor where quinoline derivatives intercalate between base pairs of double-stranded DNA through π-π interactions. Therefore, the development of new compounds with antitumor activity could be an important therapeutic strategy against this metabolic syndrome. Objective: This study was undertaken to synthesize different series of new anilinoacridines and anlinoquinoline with different substituents having biological activity. Materials and Methods: A series of new anilinoacridines and anlinoquinoline with different substituents was prepared by condensation of methyl 3-amino-4-methoxybenzoate hydrochloride with 9- chloroacridine and 4- chloroquinoline to give the target derivatives. Results: New anilinoacridines and anlinoquinoline with different substituents have been synthesized as antioxidant and anti-cancer agents. The structure of the synthesized compounds was confirmed by using spectral methods (FT-IR, 1H-NMR). The antioxidant activity of the synthesized compounds was evaluated by using DPPH radical scavenging ability. Also, the anti-cancer activity was evaluated using lung carcinoma, breast adenocarcinoma and liver carcinoma. The developed compounds 4a, b, 5a,b, 7a,b and 8a,b have shown a potent antioxidant activity. On the other hand, 4a, b, 5a and 7a exhibited the best antitumor activity against both A-549 and MCF7 cancer cells. Conclusion: For the active developed compounds, the most active antioxidant and antitumor one was 4a which registered the highest radical scavenging as well as antitumor activity.
