Biomedical waste is a real danger to public health and the environment. The quantity of this waste, mainly from hospitals, is constantly increasing, leading to various forms of pollution. This is a cross-sectional, observational study that took place in 2017. A questionnaire was submitted to nurses, doctors and those responsible for hospital hygiene and the operation of waste incinerators to assess the mechanisms and knowledge of medical staff in terms of biomedical waste management. It was confirmed that the hospital wastes are still poorly managed due to the absence of a plan or program for MPSD in all the structures studied, which attests to the non-application of the regulations in force and an inadequate internal management system in most laboratories. Due to the non-availability of health technicians and the lack of material resources in quality and quantity, a staff that is poorly informed about the regulations that apply to BMW, and a poorly recognized and disrespected BMW process that breaks even the clearest instructions regarding incineration and landfill disposal. It has become very urgent to adopt new strategies to be planned for an adequate training to be included for better medical waste management.

Objective: Monitoring and evaluation of air environmental quality, waste water and medical waste management activities in some hospitals in the Central Highlands. Research Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive survey was deployed in 6 provincial hospitals of the Central Highlands in 7th- 8th months every year for 3 years, 2011, 2012, 2013. Observing the process of waste management in hospitals, weighing the medical solid waste generated daily, sampling and environmental monitoring of air, water waste samples after treatment of hospitals. Findings: The percentage of substandard sample of radioactive 2011 was 5.88%, in 2012 was 5%, 2013 was 0.02%. Mainly in dose laboratories, rinse the nuclear medicine department, hatch covers radioactive waste storage. 100% of the air sample of wastewater treatment areas have NO2 target and 60% of SO2 target sample have not reached allowed regulations. The atmosphere at the garbage area hospitals in Kon Tum and Lam Dong provinces through 2 years of monitoring in 2012, 2013 exceeded SO2 target standards. Monitoring results incinerator emissions sample at 3 hospitals: Kontum, Gia Lai, Dak Nong in 3 years reached Regulations allow. The observation sample treated waste water of the hospital in 2013 with low contamination rate than in 2011 and 2012 in terms of physics and chemistry. Particularly criteria Total coliforms 3 years are from 40-50% of samples exceeded standards. Regarding waste management, the results of monitoring in 2013 showed that 60% of faculties have sharps instruments and 20% of the faculties have satisfactory utensils anatomical waste. 59.48% of the faculties have the guidelines for waste separation. Condition misclassified not many and occur in two hospitals Gia Lai, Dak Lak. Only Lam Dong hospitals have waste transportation vehicles secured closed during transport. The amount of waste / beds / 24 hours is 1.097kg. In particular infectious waste is 0.26kg. Only two hospitals in Daklak, Lam Dong has generated radioactive waste with a total of 0.9 kg/day. Coronavirus, which was started provincially at Wuhan of China, has become a worldwide pandemic by affecting individuals of almost all the world. The developing pandemic of COVID-19 disease requires social distancing and individual cleanliness measures to secure general wellbeing. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, practice and awareness of biomedical waste management in this pandemic situation among healthcare workers and medical students across Tamil Nadu. A cross sectional questionnaire survey was prepared to evaluate the knowledge regarding waste management and waste handling techniques. The survey found that most of the hospitals (50%) are using plastic containers for waste collection. Almost 79.7% of the respondents said they follow colour coding while disposing waste. When asked about exact category only few gave correct answers. Nearly 72.8% answered that they collect the Covid patient’s wastes separately. As coronavirus is a contagious disease, each healthcare worker should be trained in safe handling of wastes. From this survey, it is clear that training about safe handling of waste is needed among workers. This survey will help government and healthcare providers to handle this Covid pandemic successfully and more effectively.

Background: Healthcare facilities are like a double-edged sword, it caters to the healthcare needs and problems of the people by providing curative, promotive or preventive services but in the process it inevitably produces waste which in itself is hazardous to health if not managed properly. In order to improve biomedical waste management, it is important to understand and evaluate the current practices in biomedical waste management, to identify the gaps and to address them. The study was conducted to assess the practice of biomedical waste management among the healthcare personnel at a tertiary hospital.Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study was conducted among 314 healthcare personnel which comprised of 193 doctors, 85 staff nurses and 36 laboratory technicians. A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Results: A total of 78% healthcare personnel had received training on BMW management. Most of the doctors (76.2%), staff nurses (70.6%) and laboratory technicians (72.2%) had received hepatitis B vaccination. And as for injection TT, 76.2% doctors, 85.9% staff nurses and 69.4% laboratory technicians had received it. Multivariate logistic regression showed association between waste segregation practices and occupation status and training which was statistically significant. Conclusions: The study revealed satisfactory practices among the healthcare personnel. It also showed association between waste segregation practices and training on BMW management. The importance of training regarding biomedical waste management cannot be overemphasized, training and retraining on healthcare waste management should be given to healthcare personnel.

Background: Bio-medical waste management is vital issue not only to hospitals, but also to the environment, law enforcement agency, media and to the general public.The objectives of the study were to find out level of knowledge, attitude and practices of health care workers (HCWs) about bio-medical waste management in a rural hospital of Delhi. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in rural hospital, Delhi on 155 HCWs. Pre-designed, pretested, structured questionnaire were administered on 155 HCWs of hospital. Data collected and analyzed by using SPSS-17. Results: Total of 155 HCWs were selected. Majority of HCWs were in the age group of 30.3 years±5.6 (mean age±SD) Almost half (54.2%) of study population comprised of female. Most of them were nursing staff. Mean years of experience in service was 4.8±3.7 (mean age±SD). Majority HCWs in this study took education up to senior secondary and they possess respective professional qualification. Statistically significant numbers of HCWs vaccinated with HBV vaccine and received training of bio-medical waste management (p<0.05). Almost all (97.4%) HCWs aware of bio-medical waste management rules and have very positive attitude. Practice of HCWs regarding bio-medical waste management was relatively poor. Conclusions: Nursing staff have not only best knowledge and attitude but also good practices among all HCWs. Additional training have been required to Paramedics and group-D workers.

BACKGROUND: Due to existence of highly infectious materials, the biomedical waste can be a probable source for transmission of diseases as well as occupational hazards among health care workers if not adequately managed. Objective: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of biomedical waste management among health care personnel in a secondary hospital of Al Buraimi Governorate, Sultanate Oman.METHODOLOGY: A Cross sectional descriptive self-administered questionnaire based study was conducted among 207 subjects from 30th September 2015 to 30th March 2016 in Al-Buraimi hospital, Oman. Stratified random sampling comprised of four strata (100 nurses, 65 doctors, 22 housekeeping staff and 20 laboratory technicians).Chi-Square test was applied using SPSS version 21 with significance level ≤ 0.05. Confidentiality was maintained with ethical approval from research committee and informed formal consent was taken from the participants. RESULT: Overall response rate was 125 (60.3%) from total 207, mean age 36.14±8.9 and age ranges from 20 to 58 years with mean age (doctors 42.5, nurses 29.8, laboratory technician 29.2 and housekeeping staff 36). Female proportion of 82 (65.6%) was higher as compare to males 43 (34.4%). The study was analyzed on the basis of “satisfactory” and “unsatisfactory” scores using “cut-off point” tools. Nurses had better satisfactory knowledge (90.9%), attitude (94.5%) and practice (80%) scores as compare to other participants. The overall “satisfactory” knowledge, attitude and practice scores were found to be statistically insignificant (P=0.100, P=0.346, P=0.364 respectively). No significant relationship established between dichotomized variables of knowledge and practice (P = 0.264) as well as attitude and practice (P = 0.147).CONCLUSION: The “satisfactory” scores of knowledge, attitude and practice were found to be higher among nurses as compared to other participants, which may be due to intensive patient care and more involvement in biomedical waste management as well as greater responsibility allocated by hospital administration.

Background: Inadequate and inappropriate knowledge regarding disposal of Bio-Medical Waste may have serious health consequences to those who handle it as well as can have a deleterious impact on the environment. The objective of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices about the various aspects of bio-medical waste (BMW) management among private practitioners of Poonamallee taluk, ChennaiMethods: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the Knowledge, Attitude and Practices about the various aspects of Bio-Medical Waste (BMW) management among private practitioners of Poonamallee taluk, Chennai. The sample size was calculated as 171. Data was collected using a structured interview schedule among all private practitioners including dentists. Data was entered and analyzed by using IBM SPSS software Version 21. Results: 78.3% private practitioners were found to have adequate knowledge about the biomedical waste management rules. 76% private practitioners had knowledge regarding segregation of waste at source. 56.7% of practitioners segregated the BMW into different categories at source level and disposed in specified color coded containers. Conclusions: The importance of training regarding biomedical waste management needs emphasis; lack of proper and complete knowledge about biomedical waste management impacts practices of appropriate waste disposal.

Background: Revised and redefined biomedical waste management (BMWM) rules 2016 are an area of immediate focus for the health care personnel amidst the menace created by improper disposal of health care waste, emergence of multi drug resistant superbugs and harmful emissions.Methods: The present cross sectional study was conducted in Rajiv Gandhi Super speciality hospital, Tahirpur, an upcoming referral hospital in east Delhi, India. The study was merged with the training sessions conducted in 13 phases. A self-administered questionnaire pertaining to biomedical waste management rules 2016 knowledge, awareness and practices was used for data collection.Results: Of the 100 respondents consisted of 50 doctors, 30 nurses and 20 technicians, about 54% of HCP were aware about modifications in waste categories. Approximately 42% of the respondents could define sharp waste correctly while 56% had the clarity of changed specifications of BMW bags. Safe injection practices were followed by 47%.Conclusions: Doctors were aware that there had been revision in the biomedical waste management rules in 2016 and its legal aspect but nursing staff was better in the practical implications of the same while the technicians lagged behind in both. It is of prime importance to reinforce comprehensive teaching programmes, spot trainings for the staff and continuous medical education in our hospital setting.

Introduction- Biomedical waste is of global subject today. The biomedical waste (management and handling) rules came into existence in 1998 with the latest amendment being made in 2019. Methods- This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried among 163 nursing students to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding biomedical waste management as per 2019 rules using total enumeration method. Nursing students who had clinical exposure >6 months and willing to participate were included in the study. Nursing students who were in their 1st academic year were excluded. The questionnaire was divided into four components assessing knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding biomedical waste management. The obtained scores of participants were converted into percentages and categorized as excellent (> 70%) and poor (< 70%). Results- Mean age of participants was 21.54 + 2.49 years with the majority being female (81.6%) and studying in B.Sc. nursing (59.5%). Majority of participants had poor level of knowledge in various domains of biomedical waste management like awareness (78.5%), color coding (84.7%), biomedical waste disposal methods (92.6%), and universal precautions (97.5%) except for biomedical waste hazard symbol (15.3%). About 95.1% of participants had overall poor knowledge regarding biomedical waste management. Nearly 76.1% and 74.2% of participants showed positive attitudes and safe practice patterns respectively. Conclusion- Although nursing student’s attitudes and patterns of practice were excellent yet they had an unsatisfactory level of knowledge related to recent amendments in biomedical waste management rules, 2019. Regular teaching and periodic monitoring of practices regarding biomedical waste are highly recommended. Key words: knowledge, attitude, practices, biomedical waste, nursing students.
