We show that glasses with aligned smectic liquid crystal-like order can be produced by physical vapor deposition of a molecule without any equilibrium liquid crystal phases. Smectic-like order in vapor-deposited films was characterized by wide-angle X-ray scattering. A surface equilibration mechanism predicts the highly smectic-like vapor-deposited structure to be a result of significant vertical anchoring at the surface of the equilibrium liquid, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy orientation analysis confirms this prediction. Understanding of the mechanism enables informed engineering of different levels of smectic order in vapor-deposited glasses to suit various applications. The preparation of a glass with orientational and translational order from a nonliquid crystal opens up an exciting paradigm for accessing extreme anisotropy in glassy solids.

SiC films with a quantity of carbon and silicon were obtained by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) from a sintered SiC target with different current intensity of EB. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used for characterization of chemical bonding states of C and Si elements in SiC films in order to study the influence of current intensity of EB on the compositions in the deposited films. At the same time, the nanohardness of the deposited films was investigated.

ABSTRACTLaser physical vapor deposition (LPVD) has been used to deposit thin CoSi2 films on (001)silicon at different substrate temperatures ranging from room temperature to 600°C. Particulate-free silicide thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. We have found that films deposited at 200°C and below are amorphous; 400°C deposited films are polycrystalline whereas films deposited at 600°C are of epitaxial nature. The Effect of subsequent annealing on resistivity of room-temperature deposited thin films has been investigated. The resistivity value decreases to less than 15 μΩcm after annealing making these films suitable for microelectronics applications. The correlation between microstructure and properties of these films are discussed.

AbstractQuenching of vibrational excitations in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of liquid acetic acid is observed. At the oxygen core resonance associated with localized excitations at the O–H bond, the spectra lack the typical progression of vibrational excitations observed in RIXS spectra of comparable systems. We interpret this phenomenon as due to strong rehybridization of the unoccupied molecular orbitals as a result of hydrogen bonding, which however cannot be observed in x-ray absorption but only by means of RIXS. This allows us to address the molecular structure of the liquid, and to determine a lower limit for the average molecular chain length.
