Abstract This article argues for a semantic theory of discourse structure, with a strong cross-linguistic focus. Its argument starts with analysis of two phenomena related to discourse and cognition : conjunction; and categorization. After this initial justification, claims are developed within a specific research model for discourse, but also drawing on the rich field of data available in intercultural environments. Specific results include the claim that 'Mediterranean' discourse-types differ from Anglo AND 'Oriental ' types in preferring a different form of 'framing' device for discourse, namely a particularizing rather than generalizing form. There is also discussion of the implications of the approach for linguistic methodology and cognitive theory.

Purpose Studies have examined the influence of knowledge-sharing factors on attitudes and intentions to share knowledge; thus, there is a need to add to the limited research to examine individuals’ actual knowledge-sharing behaviour (KSB). Drawing upon the social cognitive theory (SCT) and transformational leadership, this study aims to develop a new research model which modifies the standard SCT model and augments it with other theories to examine academics’ KSBs. Design/methodology/approach Questionnaire surveys based on literature and pilot study were conducted with 785 academic staff from four Vietnamese public universities. This study applied structural equation modelling to test the proposed research model and hypotheses. Findings The findings show that environmental factors (subjective norms, trust) and personal factors (knowledge self-efficacy, enjoyment in helping others) had positive impacts on KSB; KSB had a strongly positive effect on innovative behaviour; and transformational leadership positively moderated the effects of subjective norms, trust and knowledge self-efficacy on KSB. Interestingly, psychological ownership of knowledge was found to have insignificant associations with KSB. Practical implications The study findings can be used by university leaders, academic staff and researchers in other similar contexts. Originality/value Until now, to the best of the researchers’ knowledge, no studies have applied SCT as a primary lens, in which transformational leadership positioned in a focal behaviour also affected KSB, to investigate research on KSB in organisations, especially in institutions of higher education.

BACKGROUND Both doctors and consumers have engaged in using social media for health purposes. Social media has changed traditional one-to-one communication between doctors and patients to many-to-many communication between doctors and consumers. However, little is known about the effect of doctor-consumer interaction on consumers’ health behaviors. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate how doctor-consumer interaction in social media affects consumers’ health behaviors. METHODS On the basis of professional-client interaction theory and social cognitive theory, we propose that doctor-consumer interaction can be divided into instrumental interaction and affective interaction. These two types of interactions influence consumers’ health behaviors through declarative knowledge (DK), self-efficacy (SE), and outcome expectancy (OE). To validate our proposed research model, we employed the survey method and developed corresponding measurement instruments for constructs in our research model. A total of 352 valid answers were collected, and partial least square was performed to analyze the data. RESULTS Instrumental doctor-consumer interaction was found to influence consumers’ DK (t294=5.763, P<.001), SE (t294=4.891, P<.001), and OE (t294=7.554, P<.001) significantly, whereas affective doctor-consumer interaction also impacted consumers’ DK (t294=4.025, P<.001), SE (t294=4.775, P<.001), and OE (t294=4.855, P<.001). Meanwhile, consumers’ DK (t294=3.838, P<.001), SE (t294=3.824, P<.001), and OE (t294=2.985, P<.01) all significantly affected consumers’ health behaviors. Our mediation analysis showed that consumers’ DK, SE, and OE partially mediated the effect of instrumental interaction on health behaviors, whereas the three mediators fully mediated the effect of affective interaction on health behaviors. CONCLUSIONS Compared with many intentional intervention programs, doctor-consumer interaction can be treated as a natural cost-effective intervention to promote consumers’ health behaviors. Meanwhile, both instrumental and affective interaction should be highlighted for the best interaction results. DK, SE, and OE are working mechanisms of doctor-consumer interaction.

Based on social cognitive theory, this study proposes a research framework to investigate two different social media discontinuance behaviours: reduced usage and abandoned usage. Specifically, perceived technology overload, information overload and social overload are the environmental factors that induce negative personal states, including dissatisfaction and social media fatigue, which lead to negative behavioural changes, such as reduced usage and abandoned usage of social media. The proposed research model was tested empirically with data collected among Facebook users. The research results indicate that impacts from perceived technology overload, information overload and social overload on social network fatigue and dissatisfaction vary. Dissatisfaction exerts greater impacts on abandoned-usage behaviour than social media fatigue, but similar impacts on reduced-usage behaviour as social media fatigue. In addition, reduced-usage behaviour was found to lead to abandoned-usage behaviour. Finally, we discuss the theoretical and practical contributions that can be gleaned from the proposed research model.

Abstract This articles reports on the fieldwork methodology that was adopted to collect naturally occurring conversations within an Italo-Australian family. In particular, it focusses on the gradual development of the researcher’s position from an outsider to the family network to an insider of a special kind, as reflected through gradual changes in the topics and discourse structure of the conversations, the participants’ constellation and the languages used. The articles evaluates some major adjustments that had to be made to the ethnographic methods adopted as initial fieldwork models. It concludes that any method needs modifications in order to suit the specific speech community under scrutiny as well as the linguistic focus of the research.

This study uses social cognitive theory as basis to propose an integrative, multilevel research model that examines how entrepreneurs evaluate opportunities. We use a conjoint experiment coupled with hierarchical linear modelling to empirically test the model. Results indicate that age, gender, social capital relatedness and dispositional regulatory focus will have an impact on evaluation decisions. The study contributes to the extant research on opportunity evaluation by examining how entrepreneurs evaluate opportunities and by providing an integrative framework for the field of entrepreneurship.

Technology advancement has transformed the recent trend of payment method from a traditional cash system to the use of electronic device connected to wireless network, known as mobile payment system. This study reviews the research model conducted by Verkijika (2020) which aimed to measure the effect of individual affective responses on the acceptance of mobile payment system by combining two theories: Social Cognitive Theory and Regret Theory. In particular, this research was conducted to observe the effects of affective responses on the behavior of digital native users. The structural model was applied to test the hypotheses using the SmartPLS 3.0 application. The data obtained through questionnaires collected from 301 respondents in Indonesia. The results of this study presented a variety of findings that were different from the comparative study. The findings indicate that there is no single affective factor that dominates the influence (of what?) on the users’ intentions to adopt and to recommend the use of mobile payment technology.

The notion of scientific paradigm has taken some time to be accepted by linguists, and eventoday the problem of boundaries of coexisting nowadays linguistic paradigms remains debatable. Althoughmethodological guidelines of a paradigm of scientific knowledge in linguistics have in principle beenworked out, the fact that linguistics is intensively approaching interdisciplinarity entails the appearance ofoverlapping zones “on the boundaries” of linguistic paradigms as well as “on the boundaries” of linguisticsand other cognitive sciences. Cognitive-discursive paradigm offers results of research, devoted to the role oflanguage unfolding in thought. Being both fundamental and experimental, cognitive approach contributessignificantly to the development of applied sciences, in particular to the theory and methodology of languageteaching. The approach gives opportunity to study conceptualization and categorization processes, lexicaland discursive competence in the view of applied teaching goals. The article stresses that cognitive-discursive paradigm:– is increasingly growing in its interdisciplinary nature, thus approaching even closer the EFL teaching;– investigates represented in the language knowledge and experience structures, introducing theexperience of the world around us into lexical competence of EFL students;– considers one of its major tasks further investigation of mental lexicon;– as the discursive practice is becoming even more accessible for EFL students in the course of on-linecommunication, it offers new methods of teaching communication, based on cognitive theory of discourse.
