Navigating bacterial taxonomy in a world of unchartered microbial organisms.

Abstract This book chapter focuses on state-of-the-art informatics techniques that perform bacterial taxonomic assertions on metabarcoding data sets and MAGs, as well as highlighting some of the advantages and disadvantages of the respective approaches and finishes by exploring why they are yet to be perfectly complementary. Currently, the results of these two approaches can be difficult to compare for the various reasons we highlight, and they are compounded by the fact that the data sets typically have different purposes. Despite the current difficulties, the field is heading in a direction that attempts to harmonize bacterial taxonomy generated by both approaches, ultimately making these comparisons less problematic in the future.

Abstract Protein complexes are the fundamental units for many cellular processes. Identifying protein complexes accurately is critical for understanding the functions and organizations of cells. With the increment of genome-scale protein–protein interaction (PPI) data for different species, various computational methods focus on identifying protein complexes from PPI networks. In this article, we give a comprehensive and updated review on the state-of-the-art computational methods in the field of protein complex identification, especially focusing on the newly developed approaches. The computational methods are organized into three categories, including cluster-quality-based methods, node-affinity-based methods and ensemble clustering methods. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of different methods are discussed, and then, the performance of 17 state-of-the-art methods is evaluated on two widely used benchmark data sets. Finally, the bottleneck problems and their potential solutions in this important field are discussed.

SummaryDespite the clinical benefit associated with the combined use of aspirin and clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndrome or those undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, a considerable interindividual variability in response to these drugs have been consistently reported. There is a growing interest on applying platelet functional tests with the goal of identifying patients at increased risk of recurrent ischaemic events and potentially tailoring antiplatelet treatment regimens.This manuscript will review the state of the art on the most commonly available platelet functional tests, describing their advantages and disadvantages and exploring their applicability in clinical practice.

The article considers the role of trust in the economy, the mechanisms of its accumulation and the possibility of using it as one of the growth factors in the future. The advantages and disadvantages of measuring the level of generalized trust using two alternative questions — about trusting people in general and trusting strangers — are analyzed. The results of the analysis of dynamics of the level of generalized trust among Russian youth, obtained within the study of the Institute for National Projects in 10 regions of Russia, are presented. It is shown that there are no significant changes in trust in people in general during the study at university. At the same time, the level of trust in strangers falls, which can negatively affect the level of trust in the country as a whole, and as a result have negative effects on the development of the economy in the future. Possible causes of the observed trends and the role of universities are discussed. Also the question about the connection between the level of education and generalized trust in countries with different quality of the institutional environment is raised.

Collaborative filtering suffers from the problems of data sparsity and cold start, which dramatically degrade recommendation performance. To help resolve these issues, we propose TrustSVD, a trust-based matrix factorization technique. By analyzing the social trust data from four real-world data sets, we conclude that not only the explicit but also the implicit influence of both ratings and trust should be taken into consideration in a recommendation model. Hence, we build on top of a state-of-the-art recommendation algorithm SVD++ which inherently involves the explicit and implicit influence of rated items, by further incorporating both the explicit and implicit influence of trusted users on the prediction of items for an active user. To our knowledge, the work reported is the first to extend SVD++ with social trust information. Experimental results on the four data sets demonstrate that our approach TrustSVD achieves better accuracy than other ten counterparts, and can better handle the concerned issues.

Background: Winding deformation is one of the most common faults in power transformers, which seriously threatens the safe operation of transformers. In order to discover the hidden trouble of transformer in time, it is of great significance to actively carry out the research of transformer winding deformation detection technology. Methods: In this paper, several methods of winding deformation detection with on-line detection prospects are summarized. The principles and characteristics of each method are analyzed, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method as well as the future research directions are expounded. Finally, aiming at the existing problems, the development direction of detection method for winding deformation in the future is prospected. Results: The on-line frequency response analysis method is still immature, and the vibration detection method is still in the theoretical research stage. Conclusion: The ΔV − I1 locus method provides a new direction for on-line detection of transformer winding deformation faults, which has certain application prospects and practical engineering value.

The involvement of Robots and automated machines in different industries has increased drastically in recent years. Part of this revolution is accomplishing tasks previously performed by humans with advanced robots, which would replace the entire human workforce in the future. In some industries the workers are required to complete different operations in hazardous or difficult environments. Operations like these could be replaced with the use of tele-operated systems that have the capability of grasping objects in their surroundings, thus abandoning the need for the physical presence of the human operator at the area while still allowing control. In this research our goal is to create an assisting system that would improve the grasping of a human operator using a tele-operated robotic gripper and arm, while advising the operator but not forcing a solution. For a given set of objects we computed the optimal grasp to be achieved by the gripper, based on two grasp quality measures of our choosing (namely power grasp and precision grasp). We then tested the performance of different human subjects who tried to grasp the different objects with the tele-operated system, while comparing their success to unassisted and assisted grasping. Our goal is to create an assisting algorithm that would compute optimal grasps and might be integrated into a complete, state-of-the-art tele-operated system.

BACKGROUND: DNA sequence alignment is one of the most fundamental and important operation to identify which gene family may contain this sequence, pattern matching for DNA sequence has been a fundamental issue in biomedical engineering, biotechnology and health informatics. OBJECTIVE: To solve this problem, this study proposes an optimal multi pattern matching with wildcards for DNA sequence. METHODS: This proposed method packs the patterns and a sliding window of texts, and the window slides along the given packed text, matching against stored packed patterns. RESULTS: Three data sets are used to test the performance of the proposed algorithm, and the algorithm was seen to be more efficient than the competitors because its operation is close to machine language. CONCLUSIONS: Theoretical analysis and experimental results both demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods and is especially effective for the DNA sequence.
