Critical research needs associated with the effective application of visualization to transportation systems projects are identified. Visualization research needs are discussed within a broader, multidisciplinary context of technology development in the areas of simulation and modeling. Parallels are drawn between the current state of the practice in transportation as compared with that in the military–defense and aerospace areas. Some major differences between those areas and transportation systems development and user environments are noted, in particular ( a) the current absence within the transportation community of a strong government research and development focal point for visual simulation and modeling and ( b) the absence of an economic imperative similar to what prompted the defense community to embrace fully these technologies (i.e., fuel shortages, training system costs, and force readiness).

River water quality degradation is one of the most significant environmental challenges. Over the years, many models have been used to investigate the current state of Malaysian rivers and its effects to the environment. River discharge is an important factor in water quality investigation. An integrative computational model, GIS coupled with SWAT model was being used to predict river discharge of this research. The simulation results in the period 1999 to 2010 represented fluctuation of discharge relatively well with both R2and NSI values were above 0.6. The results proved that the development of integrative GIS technology coupled with SWAT model is a good tool for environmental technology development in terms of investigating the current state of Langat river water quality as well as the capability of simulating the river discharge in the river basin. This shows that GIS-SWAT interface can be a reliable tool for water quality modeling in Malaysia in the future and further development on the software technology is a benefit for the water resources and environmental studies.

Nanotechnology not only offers the promise of new enhancements to existing materials but also allows for the development of new materials and devices. The potential applications of nanotechnology range from medicine to agriculture to health and environmental science and beyond. Nanotechnology is growing at such a rate that Lux Research in 2007 estimated that nanotechnology will be incorporated into 15% of global manufactured goods by 2014. The U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative defines nanotechnology as the following: “(1) Research and technology development involving structures with at least one dimension in the range of 1-100 nanometers (nm), frequently with atomic/molecular precision; (2) Creating and using structures, devices, and systems that have unique properties and functions because of their nanoscale dimensions; (3) The ability to control or manipulate on the atomic scale.” Nanomedicine and its subcategories of nanotherapeutics and in vivo nanodiagnostics incorporate nanoscale materials with unique properties that can enable new or improved treatments and diagnostics for many diseases and disorders.

Technology development has grown rapidly in the last decades and gained importance for accounting and auditing through its identified potentials. Particularly the automation of judgment systems and systems that require human intervention, are deemed to be more relevant to confront a transformation through Robotic Process Automation (RPA). During the continuous development, the augmentation of such systems through Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents a greenfield project with high expectations. However theoretical frameworks have not yet been elaborative and sufficient to capture how such deployments can be conducted. Addressing this research gap, this study presents a summarized overview of the transforming RPA ecosystem and indicates what challenges are critical to being confronted for a successful implementation of such systems in accounting and auditing.

This paper describes the technologies that are being developed or extended beyond the current state-of-the-art to achieve Advanced Turbine Systems (ATS) Program goals. The Westinghouse ATS plant is an advanced closed-loop enoled combined cycle, based on an advanced gas turbine engine incorporating novel design concepts and enhancements of existing technologies. The ATS engine is a fuel-flexible design operating nn natural gas with provisions fnr future conversion to coal or biomass fuels. It is based nn proven concepts employed in 501F and 501G engines. To achieve the required performance and reliability the engine will include closed-loop steam cooling, advanced materials and coatings, and enhanced component performance. To minimize NOx emissions, an ultra-low NOx combustion system will be incorporated. To ensure technical success, development programs are being conducted on the following: closed-loop steam cooling, advanced materials and coatings, component aerodynamic performance, flow visualization, optical diagnostics, combustion generated noise, and catalytic combustion.

Additive manufacturing techniques are commonly used in industry and mechanical prototyping. The past years brought rapid growth in this technology development, also in the speaker cabinets manufacturing industry. We observe numerous DIY projects on the market based on the 3D printed cabinet parts; however, this technology also offers novel options that should be investigated and documented. In the current state of the art, the basic properties and construction aspects for speaker acoustic performance is not provided as the 3d printing technique is usually treated as the tool for other projects' development. This paper will provide a detailed comparison of the most common 3D printing materials used in FDM techno9logy, such as PLA, TPE, PET-G, and others with different mechanical properties. Example enclosure for a loudspeaker of 37 mm diameter will be printed in different shapes and compared for frequency and sensitivity differences. The results will be discussed, investigating the possible use of different than traditional rigid plastic enclosures and new options using complicated geometry shapes possibly to manufacture with 3D printing techniques.

The article describes Tools of the Mind—an instructional program developed 25 years ago and now implemented in a variety of early childhood settings across the United States and in Canada. Based on the principles of cultural-historical psychology, this program addresses developmental and learning needs of young children by offering a comprehensive curriculum and by delivering professional development for early childhood educators. The article provides examples of how Vygotskian and post-Vygotskian ideas get embodied in Tools of the Mind instructional strategies with a special emphasis on make-believe play as a leading activity for preschool- and kindergarten-aged children. The authors discuss the results of several evaluation studies conducted on Tools and how these results helped to shape the current state of the program.
