In this study the experimental isotherm data of biosorption of Pb(II) onto algae was modeled using several models. These models are: Langmuir, Hill-Sips, Brouers-Sotolongo, Brouers-Gaspard, and Redlich-Peterson models. The coefficients of each model were determined by non-linear fitting using Mathematica9 program. The maximum Pb(II) removal rate increased with the increase of temperature and reached the maximum value (98%) at the temperature of 40°C. Even if the R2 error quantity is not the unique and always the best measure for nonlinear fitting, the Brouers-Sotolongo model gives in all cases the best fit and is definitely the most suitable one to satisfactorily describe bioisorption of Pb(II) on the algal biomass. In addition, this study shows that a complete set of data is necessary to have a good representation of the isotherm.

Infectious tissue culture fluids of the majority of serotypes of adenovirus at low dilutions detach HeLa or KB cells from glass surfaces within a few hours after inoculation. A reproducible method for testing cell detachment was devised. The factor present in infectious tissue culture fluids and responsible for cell detachment is trypsin-sensitive and non-dialyzable; it is smaller and more resistant to the effect of heat or ultraviolet light than the infectious virus particle. Cell detachment activity was found to be temperature-dependent, and the cell-detaching titer of infectious tissue culture fluids was not affected by repeated exposure to HeLa cells. Inhibition of cell detachment by human or rabbit sera was observed only when other antibodies to adenovirus antigens were also present, but the antibody inhibiting cell detachment could not be correlated quantitatively with complement-fixing or homologous neutralizing antibody.

Residual stresses significantly influence the strength and lifetime of the glass products, therefore their qualification and quantification during production is basically important for evaluating their probable reliability in application. The current paper aims at introducing a novel procedure of the suggested automatic glass quality test based on instrumented scratch test completed with computer aided image analysis. A special emphasis is put on the problem of limited reproducibility and reliability of the image processing, arisen in the first stage of the research work. The latest results consisting in the development of a new algorithm, providing a more reliable evaluation of the test data will be described.

AbstractOrganic compounds such as oleic acid, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polyacrylate (PAA) were coated on slide and silica glass powders. The resulting interaction mechanism was determined by the leaching properties of the glass, and the bond strength of each ion on the glass with coated organics. Soluble components such as sodium and calcium play important roles in the interaction properties of the organics with glass surfaces. The effects of solvent are also discussed.
