Modern languages and Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD): implications of teaching adult learners with dyslexia in distance learning

The spring phase of the pandemic made the education of adolescents with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) challenging. In the present study, which included 122 adolescents with SpLD (50% from Slovenia, 50% from Germany), we investigated how Slovenian and German adolescents with SpLD perceived and solved some of the challenges of distance learning. The study data were collected with two online questionnaires (in Slovenian and German, respectively). Slovenian adolescents were statistically significantly more likely than German adolescents to mention problems with attention, the importance of multisensory learning, and the importance of being able to choose the time to learn, as well as psychosomatic problems. Slovenian adolescents had more experiences with praise from teachers during the pandemic and they also mentioned more issues with the transition to distance learning and the use of information and communication technology. Younger adolescents had more parental help. Male adolescents were more likely to report that they did not have the right spatial conditions for learning. German adolescents spent more time chatting on social media and experienced less support for learning. Female adolescents were more likely to express fear of the pandemic and a lack of learning support, while male adolescents across the sample missed their peers more. Most of the respondents came from families in which the pandemic did not cause serious material and spatial problems, but German adolescents were statistically significantly less likely to feel these consequences. According to the respondents, the spatial and material conditions were similar in both countries.

The article examines some modern deffinitions of system of difficulties in learning process which children and students experience. Тhe main understanding of the educational difficulties and the children experiencing them have outlined. The creative potential these children have is presented by the studies of authors from different countries. The development of their giftedness and talent in different art fields could be used as means of improving their learning abilities in various school subjects, in which they experience difficulties.

Reading and writing skills influence the social status of students, exerting effects not only on learning, but also on wellbeing. This study aimed to assess the impact of diagnosis of specific learning disorder on well-being in secondary-school students, comparing students with a diagnosis of specific learning disorder (SLD-group), students showing learning difficulties without diagnosis (LD-group) and students without learning difficulties (control-group). Students were tested with neuropsychological screening tests in order to identify learning difficulties and were further assessed by means of psychological and school well-being questionnaires. The results show that LD group perceive themselves as having a low sense of mastery and autonomy, less interest and engagement in daily activities and low peer social support than their schoolmates. This result highlights, for the LD group, a low well-being experience, which is not observed in the SLD and control groups. On the contrary, SLD group students do not differ from control group students in any dimensions except for the perceived parents’ support and involvement in school life, in which the SLD group show the highest scores. This work underlines the importance of having a diagnosis as it seems to work as a protective factor for both the psychological and school well-being of the student.

After many months of research and course design, an initial distance learning course offering was delivered in early 2011 called, “Introduction to Canadian Common Law for Land Surveyors”. The course was designed to expose foreign trained professional land surveyors to the study of boundary law. Many present candidates for articles and licensing in professional land surveying have been welcomed to Canada as permanent residents as part of an immigration screening process that recognizes foreign education and credentials. In meeting its obligation to offer learning opportunities for such candidates to gain admission to the practice of professional surveying in Ontario, AOLS undertook the development of adult learning courses in all disciplines, including survey law. This presentation will describe the issues surrounding development and delivery of survey law learning. The challenges are usually daunting enough when the subject matter is law. What has made the development of this series of courses novel is the use of a Learning Management System (LMS) which allows for the integration of reading resources, external references, video vignettes, and a replay of past learning sessions. The course design has been internet based and allows for learner participation from a distance through the internet. For adult learners who are working, have families, and live away from the teaching venue, these courses offer new opportunities in the education of the geomatics professional. For existing members looking for professional development, the full suite of courses promises to be a rich resource for staying current and in touch with new developments in boundary law.

In this study, the POW + C-SPACE (Pick my idea - Organise my notes - Write and say more + Characters – Setting – Purpose – Action – Conclusion - Emotions) strategy shaped on the basis of the Self-Regulated Strategy Development Model (SRSDM) was presented through teachers working in the resource room, to evaluate the effects on story-writing skills of the students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD). The study was designed with the multiple probe model with probe phase between subjects. The independent variable of the research is the POW + C-SPACE strategy presented through the teachers working in the resource room. The dependent variable is the story writing levels of the children with SLD who are educated in the resource room. The study group consists of three teachers and their students with SLD in the resource room. The POW + C-SPACE strategy was presented to the students with SLD through the teachers working in the resource room. As a result of the study, it was concluded that when the teachers in the resource room presented the POW + C-SPACE strategy, it effectively developed the students' story writing skills.

ABSTRACTThe teaching and learning process is a very important activity and must be carried out even though the situation is not possible in schools amid the Covid-19 pandemic as it is today. So this study aims to analyze learning difficulties, distance learning, and analysis of student learning difficulties in PJJ amid the Covid-19 pandemic. This research uses a qualitative approach to the type of case studies, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study show First, learning difficulties in students can be experienced due to disruption in him both from within and outside himself. This condition can also occur amid the Covid-19 pandemic. In the end, through various appeals from several parties, students were asked to carry out their learning activities in their respective homes. Second, with the appeals and suggestions of students studying at home, then Distance Learning (PJJ) becomes an alternative learning activity for students in order to break the corona virus transmission chain. Third, during the Covid-19 pandemic with PJJ students faced problems accessing internet devices and quotas, thus the government and all education administrators to provide internet quota subsidies, emergency curricula, and develop effective learning strategies for communities affected by Covid-19.
