This study was to determine the effects of five-week high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, blood glucose, and relevant systemic hormones when compared to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in overweight and obese young women.Methods. Eighteen subjects completed 20 sessions of HIIT or MICT for five weeks. HIIT involved 60 × 8 s cycling at ~90% of peak oxygen consumption (V˙O2peak) interspersed with 12 s recovery, whereas MICT involved 40-minute continuous cycling at 65% ofV˙O2peak.V˙O2peak, body composition, blood glucose, and fasting serum hormones, including leptin, growth hormone, testosterone, cortisol, and fibroblast growth factor 21, were measured before and after training.Results. Both exercise groups achieved significant improvements inV˙O2peak(+7.9% in HIIT versus +11.7% in MICT) and peak power output (+13.8% in HIIT versus +21.9% in MICT) despite no training effects on body composition or the relevant systemic hormones. Blood glucose tended to be decreased after the intervention (p=0.062). The rating of perceived exertion in MICT was higher than that in HIIT (p=0.042).Conclusion. Compared with MICT, short-term HIIT is more time-efficient and is perceived as being easier for improving cardiorespiratory fitness and fasting blood glucose for overweight and obese young women.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is emerging as a safe and effective means to combat chronic diseases. The objective of this work was to perform a systematic review of the effect of HIIT interventions in an aging population. Three electronic databases were searched for randomized trials comparing the effect of HIIT and moderate-intensity continuous training in older adults. After a thorough screening process, 15 articles were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria. All studies expressed a comparable or superior effect of HIIT in cardiorespiratory fitness measures. No studies reported a lessened effect of HIIT in comparison with moderate-intensity continuous training. This systematic review demonstrates that HIIT is a useful exercise regimen, which can be used in older adults to increase cardiorespiratory fitness. More research is needed to determine the effects of HIIT in an aging, predominately female population.

ABSTRACT Background: Cardiorespiratory fitness essential to prevent the risk cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to determine the relative effectiveness of Steady State Cardio (SSC) and High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) on cardiorespiratory fitness in the early adult age group. Subjects and Method: This was a randomized control trial conducted at the School of Health Polytechnics, Surakarta, from October to November, 2019. A total sample 45 students was divided into 2 groups: (1) SSC group and (2) HIIT group. The dependent variable was cardiorespiratory fitness. The independent variables were SSC and HIIT. The measuring instrument was a multi-stage fitness involving a 20 meter long run. The results were converted into VO2max level. The data were analyzed by Mann Whitney. Results: After the intervention, the VO2max level was higher in the HIIT group (Mean= 24.28; SD= 5.42) than the SSC group (Mean= 21.66; SD= 6.99), but it was statistically non-significant (p= 0.503). Conclusion: Steady State Cardio and High Intensity Interval Training have comparable effect on cardiorespiratory fitness. Introduction: Serious health implications from having low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and being overweight in young adulthood are carried forward into later life. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a time-effective, potent stimulus for improving CRF and indices of cardiometabolic health. To date, few studies have investigated the use of equipment-free HIIT or the impact of supervision for improving CRF via HIIT.Methods: Thirty healthy young adults (18–30 y) were randomised to 4 weeks (12 sessions) equipment-free, bodyweight based supervised laboratory HIIT (L-HIIT), unsupervised home HIIT (H-HIIT) or no-intervention (CON). Utilised exercises were star jumps, squats and standing sprints. Measurements of CRF (anaerobic threshold (AT) and VO2peak), blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), blood glucose and plasma insulin by oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and muscle architecture were performed at baseline and after the intervention.Results: When compared to the control group, both HIIT protocols improved CRF (AT: L-HIIT mean difference compared to the control group (MD) +2.1 (95% CI: 0.34–4.03) ml/kg/min; p = 0.02; H-HIIT MD +3.01 (1.17–4.85) ml/kg/min; p = 0.002), VO2peak: L-HIIT (MD +2.94 (0.64–5.25) ml/kg/min; p = 0.01; H-HIIT MD +2.55 (0.34–4.76) ml/kg/min; p = 0.03), BMI (L-HIIT MD −0.43 (−0.86 to 0.00) kg/m2; p = 0.05; H-HIIT: MD −0.51 (−0.95 to −0.07) kg/m2; p = 0.03) and m. vastus lateralis pennation angle (L-HIIT MD 0.2 (0.13–0.27)°; p < 0.001; H-HIIT MD 0.17 (0.09 to 0.24)°; p < 0.001). There was no significant change in BP, blood glucose or plasma insulin in any of the groups.Conclusions: Four weeks time-efficient, equipment-free, bodyweight-based HIIT is able to elicit improvements in CRF irrespective of supervision status. Unsupervised HIIT may be a useful tool for counteracting the rise of sedentary behaviours and consequent cardiometabolic disorders in young adults.

Abstract Persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have poor cardiorespiratory fitness and accelerated biological aging driven by systemic impairments in metabolism and inflammation. In this study of older RA participants, our goal was to identify the effects of a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program on cardiorespiratory fitness and peripheral CD4+ T cell metabolism. We isolated CD4+ T cells from peripheral blood mononuclear cells in sedentary female RA participants (n=6; age=64.0+/-6.3 years) who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing and phlebotomy before and after 10 weeks of HIIT. HIIT improved RA cardiorespiratory fitness by 6.5+/-6.0% (pre-HIIT VO2 peak=25.1+/-5.1 ml/kg/min, post-HIIT VO2 peak=26.7+/-5.0; p=0.05). As measured by Seahorse XF Mito Stress Test, there were no significant mean changes in CD4+ T cell oxidative (oxygen consumption rate (OCR); pmol/min) or glycolytic (extracellular acidification rate (ECAR); mpH/min) metabolism, however there was large interindividual variability. RA peripheral CD4+ T cells preferred glycolytic metabolism (pre-HIIT mean basal OCR/ECAR ratio=0.78+/-0.13 pmol/mpH), while HIIT non-significantly shifted cellular preference toward oxidative metabolism (post-HIIT mean basal OCR/ECAR ratio=0.86+/-0.16; p=0.30). Increases in RA cardiorespiratory fitness following HIIT were significantly associated with increases in RA peripheral CD4+ T cell OCR/ECAR ratio (Spearman’s rho=1.0, p<0.001) and basal and maximal respiration (rho=0.89, p=0.02 for both). Additionally, increases in CD4+ T cell mitochondrial ATP-linked respiration were significantly associated with increased quantities of circulating naïve CD4+CCR7+CD45RA+ T cells (rho=0.89, p=0.02). Our findings suggest that targeting cardiorespiratory fitness may be key in modulating T cell specific oxidative metabolism and function to prevent immunosenescence in older patients with chronic inflammatory diseases.
