Physical activity–based positive youth development (PYD) programs often aim to foster character development. This study examined youth perspectives of character development curricula and the impact these activities have on their lives within and beyond the program. This case study examined youth from low-income families in a physical activity–based summer PYD program that integrated one character concept (respect, caring, responsibility, trust) in each of 4 weeks. Participants (N = 24) included a cross section of age, gender, ethnicity, and past program experience. Semi-structured interviews were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis and constant comparative methods. Thirteen themes were grouped in four categories: building highquality reciprocal relationships; intrapersonal improvement; moral reasoning and understanding; and rejection, resistance, and compliance. The findings provide participant-centered guidance for understanding youth personal and social development through physical activity in ways that are meaningful to participants, which is particularly needed for youth in low-income communities with limited youth programming.

Out-of-School-Time (OST) programs are increasingly recognized as a venue to actively engage children and youth in character development activities, but little guidance exists as to how to assess individual children and youth in OST environments for the sake of evaluating their character development. This research brief uses an illustrative case study to reflect upon the experience of selecting and completing a strength-based, multi-modal social-emotional / character assessment that used a direct assessment and a multiple informant behavior rating scale in an OST setting. Insights derived from the case study reveal opportunities and challenges associated with each assessment modality. This paper shares lessons learned with those conducting individual assessments in OST environments and with those seeking to improve our capacity to complete screening, formative, and summative assessments of social-emotional and character constructs in OST youth development programs to help children.

This article aims to describe the efforts to build religious, honesty, discipline, and student ‘s curiosity characters through HOTS-based online Civics learning. The implementation uses a qualitative approach with the case study method, which is implemented in the Indralaya class Civics learning process. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using three stages from Miles & Huberman, namely data reduction, data display and data verification/conclusion. The results show that building religious , honesty, discipline, and student curiosity characters in HOTS-based Civics learning can be pursued even though the implementation is online learning system. This character development is carried out through various activities, starting from planning, implementing student-oriented learning, and comprehensive assessment. However, this does not mean that apart from the four characters, there is no need to develop other characters. It means that other characters are still built but in line with each learning outcomes and each meeting's subject matter.
