AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the point and period prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries, the injury profile, associated risk factors and the impact of musculoskeletal injuries on trail runners who participated in selected trail races in the eThekwini municipality of KwaZulu-Natal. SUBJECTS: Participants from various trail running races volunteered to participate in the study after the completion of a trail race. METHODOLOGY: Participants were approached individually following the completion of a minimum of a 10 kilometre trail race. Each participant read a letter of information and signed an informed consent form before completing the questionnaire. A total of 197 completed informed consent and post-pilot questionnaires were collected and placed in separate sealed ballot boxes. A code was allocated to each questionnaire before data was captured on a spreadsheet for statistical analysis. RESULTS: In total, 145 questionnaires were statistically analysed. The results revealed that only ethnicity and how often the participant's trail ran per month were significant predictors of developing an injury. White participants were five times more likely to be injured compared to African participants and those who ran more than 10 times a month were 4.65 times more likely to be injured than those who ran less than five times a month. The most common past injuries sustained by trail runners was shown to be predominantly due to trauma, and were located in the knee, ankles and ITB regions. Current injuries were shown to be equally due to trauma and overuse, with predominant location being in the same anatomical regions as past injuries. CONCLUSION: The majority of the data collected was in line with the literature on running; however, most of those studies were done on road runners. The findings of this study were unique to trail runners in KwaZulu-Natal. Further studies are required on trail runners in other regions of South Africa to determine a clearer injury profile.

Background To determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of cardiovascular diseases in a rural adult black population from Limpopo Province in South Africa. Design A cross-sectional study. Methods A sample of 1608 women and 498 men aged 30 years and above participated in the study. Sociodemographic data, anthropometric measures (body mass index, waist/hip ratio), blood pressure and biochemical risk factors were measured. A global cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk profile was developed. Results There was a high prevalence of tobacco use for men (57%) and women (35.4%), with women (28.1%) predominantly using smokeless tobacco. Alcohol use was very common in men (57.2%). Women weighed a great deal more than men, and 51.7% were either overweight or obese. Diabetes was diagnosed in 8.8 and 8.5% of women and men, respectively. High-density lipoprotein-cholesterol was relatively high, whereas 42.3% of women and 28.5% of men had low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels of 3 mmol/l or more. Hypertension (blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg) was found in 25.5% of women and 21.6% of men. According to the Framingham formulae, 18.9% of women and 32.1% of men had a 20% or higher chance of having a CVD event in the next 10 years. Conclusions There was a high prevalence of chronic disease risk factors in the rural, poor black community in Limpopo, South Africa. Consequently, the population had a higher than expected risk of developing a CVD event in the following 10 years when compared with similar studies in black Africans.

Abstract Background: Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and obesity are the behavioural risk factors for non-communicable diseases. To determine behavioural risk factors for non-communicable diseases amongst adults aged 18 years and above in Collins Chabane municipality of Limpopo province, South Africa. Methods: This study included 365 participants recruited from Collins Chabane municipality of Vhembe district, Limpopo province, South Africa. Municipality was selected using simple random sampling and convenience sampling was used to choose participants. Anthropometric measurements were measured following standard techniques. Data on dietary intake was collected using Food Frequency Questionnaire. Permission and clearance were obtained and participant’s rights were respected. Results: About (24.4%) of participants consumed alcohol in the current study. Males were more likely to consume alcohol as compared to female counterpart (54.6% vs. 3.3 %) Gender has a large effect on alcohol consumption. Cramer’s V = 0.58. The prevalence of alcohol consumption was higher in male (22.8%) as compared to (1.6%) female counterparts. The prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity was 7.7%, 29.8%, and 11.3%, respectively. Majority 61.1% of the participants had sedentary lifestyle in the current study. About 13.9% of the participants smoked cigarette in the current study. Of all participants who smoked cigarette 10.1% initiated smoking at the age of less than 19 years Conclusion: Behavioural risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, consumption of over required amount of sugar, sodium, protein, energy, carbohydrates, excessive fats intake, physical inactivity, overweight, obesity exist among people in Collins Chabane municipality.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) that can present in teachers, due to the nature of the teaching profession. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of shoulder MSD in primary school teachers, Durban, South Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 203 school teachers. A questionnaire to determine the prevalence of shoulder injuries and other common injuries experienced was completed. Descriptive statistics and chi-square and binomial tests were used to analyse the results. RESULTS: The prevalence of shoulder injuries among school teachers was 53.7%, which was significantly higher than neck injuries (p=.037). Participants who had had a previous injury to the shoulder were more likely to have experienced shoulder problems at work (p = .006). A significant 76.1% had not injured their shoulder in any way (p <.0005). Additionally, the shoulder problems prevented a significant 77% of the participants from performing their normal work for up to seven days during the previous 12 months (p<.0005). CONCLUSION: Preventative and management strategies for shoulder injuries among school teachers are needed.

Abstract Background While knowledge of onset of smoking tobacco, and associated risk factors can aid the formulation of evidence-based policy and interventions, such information is scarce in South Africa. We assessed age at onset of tobacco smoking in South Africa and identified its risk factors. Methods We analysed data of 15,316 respondents aged 15–98 years from the 2012 South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Descriptive statistics and survival analysis techniques were used alongside weighted percentages. Results Overall lifetime prevalence of smoking was 20.5%. Among the 3360 ever-smoked respondents, the overall median age at smoking onset was 18 years (Inter-quartile range (IQR) =5) with 2% starting before age 10 while 60% had smoked before age 20. Likelihood of tobacco smoking was higher among adolescents (<=20 years) and those aged 20–29 years than those aged > = 60 years, thrice higher among males, 29% higher among urban dwellers and thrice higher in Western Cape and Free State than in North West Province. The onset of tobacco smoking was earlier among males, wealthier and “coloured” people from Northern and Eastern Capes. Conclusion The onset of tobacco smoking peaked at 15–22 years and varied by province, sex, location, race and other characteristics. The age restrictions on smoking in South Africa has changed over time, coupled with the recent open and electronic advertisement of tobacco, and social media could have influenced the earlier onset of tobacco smoking in South Africa. Stricter regulations on tobacco-related advertisement and sales should be implemented.
