Entanglements of power, language, identities, and ideologies perturb Black feminist poets and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) scholars alike. Here, we detail our use of Black feminist poetry to address concerns with rigor in CDA. We marry Black feminist theorizing about language to feminist CDA to illuminate how—for qualitative data analysis—poetry can foster rigor. Poetry also illuminates the suitability of feminist CDA for the Black feminist project of unveiling Black women’s discursive subjugation. Through poetry, we deconstruct and reconstruct initial analysis of data, then construct new analyses from emerging insights. Black feminist poetry provided a pathway for us to demonstrate rigor by (a) engendering precise identification, distilling, and conveying of evidence substantiating findings; (b) enriching researcher triangulation by prompting deepened dialogue—about and with data—to occur for coresearchers; and (c) stimulating reflexivity. We conclude with questions useful for leveraging Black feminist poetry for rigorous, expressly political critical qualitative inquiry.

This research is aimed at describing how the composer of Indonesia Raya (IR) construed and negotiated interpersonal meanings which represent his ideology to the Indonesians. The data in this qualitative study was the text of IR which is ideologically contested. The study analyzed the lexicogrammar properties dealing with words and structures and production processes. The data were collected by the researcher as the research instrument by using a documentation technique. The procedures of data analysis were conducted following the stages of Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework (1989), including micro analysis concerning lexical features in the text, meso analysis concerning the process production and interpretation of the text, and macro analysis concerning ideological effects and hegemonic processes in which discourse participates. The attitude system of appraisal was analyzed based on that proposed by Martin and White (2005), and Martin and Rose (2003). The results showed that from the affect viewpoint, the IR composer is seen as an educated young man who witnessed people suffer and did not only express his feeling of joy with the coming independence of Indonesia and the gratefulness, but also the insecurity and anxiety with the possibility of other forms of colonialism. Meanwhile, from the appreciation viewpoint, Indonesia is described as a noble, heredity, sacred, and magical land. Not only is it an expression of his admiration and love, but also it is a warning to maintain his emotional intimacy with the nation. The judgment subcategory illustrated that the Indonesians were mostly emotionally weak. The composer encouraged the Indonesian people to unite for a greater Indonesia.

The problem of this research is how is the structure of the text and the social context that builds Yusril's opinion on the discourse of people power? This research includes descriptive qualitative research. The approach used is the critical discourse analysis model Teun A. Van Dijk. Using a critical discourse analysis approach in analyzing data is useful in exploring meanings and the wider social, political, and historical context of the meanings. However, analyzing data using a critical discourse analysis approach can be difficult and complex. Hence there is a need for well-defined explicit approaches for discourse analysts to follow. The aim of this paper was to explore a clearly explained framework as a method for data analysis in a study investigating spirituality in nursing. Schneider’s method provided the researcher with such a clearly structured framework underpinned by critical discourse analysis that was used in the analysis of a series of interviews conducted with Australian registered nurses involved in the development of practice standards and those applying them in clinical practice. Schneider’s work steps provided a means of applying Fairclough’s and Chilton’s approaches to critical discourse analysis in a systematic and efficient manner to the analysis of the interview texts. The application of this method enabled the generation of findings that revealed the participants’ discursive constructions of spirituality.
