PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate how to overcome the dilemma of the lack of student workforce readiness upon graduation. Based on experiential learning theory, the authors propose an innovative three-step approach to marketing curriculum to help address this dilemma.Design/methodology/approachThis study examines both quantitative and qualitative data. First, quantitative results were obtained from 5,222 end-of-course surveys of students taking an experiential learning course at a southeastern United States public university. Results were also obtained from 111 end-of-course surveys of students taking experiential learning courses in marketing. Second, qualitative results were obtained through a critical review of self-reflection assignments from over 1,000 students taking a variety of experiential learning marketing courses.FindingsThe authors identify a three-step process that can be used to develop curriculum that will better prepare students for entering the workforce. The advantages and disadvantages associated with this type of curriculum are also discussed. The outcomes indicate that an entire curriculum focused on experiential learning, self-reflection and ePortfolios will allow students to not only be better prepared for the workforce but also will help them be better communicators on what they have learned.Originality/valueIn this paper, the authors contribute to the literature by providing a curriculum-based approach to learning in order to minimize the gap between academic knowledge and workforce preparedness. Sample course projects, reflective prompts and grading rubrics are provided to aid others in the implementation of this type of curriculum.

<p>Environmental education, field interventions and entertainment-education have been deployed to raise ecological consciousness in society; and studies tend to focus more on impacts, audiences and social change; often overlooking the critical encoding segment in the communication chain. If animistic or romanticist ‘immersion in nature’ engenders eco-friendly dispositions, it’s also possible that behavior change can come from immersing change-agents (cast/crew) in natural environments to enhance eco-consciousness and improve encoding and communication competencies. This study used participant observation within natural immersive production environments; and random interviews to assess eco-behavior change in key cast/crew in the production of Linda’s<i> Joint,</i> a radio serial on gorilla protection in Cross River State, Nigeria. Findings show that majority of cast/crew imbibed eco-friendly attitudes, showed improved encoding competencies and became convinced change-agents following their participation in the production. Significantly, the study strengthens pedagogical values of loop-writing approaches and experiential learning especially in ambient production locations.</p>

Gendered processes in the sport industry often perpetuate male dominance and female inferiority. While these gendered occurrences have been well documented, the outcomes of such processes are underexplored. Under the guidance of objectification theory and the production–reception relationship, the authors investigated the influence of objectification in sports-media outlets’ coverage of a female sporting event for a national sample of U.S. consumers (N = 225). In addition, given the lack of coverage directed toward female sporting events, the current study investigated the influence of previous viewership on consumer behaviors for a future women’s sporting event. Findings suggest that processes of objectification influence both men’s and women’s consumer behaviors and that previous viewership influences future consumer-behavior motives. Furthermore, objectified images and language did not adversely affect future consumer behaviors for those who had previously viewed a similar women’s sporting event. Sport-media and communications professionals alike can leverage these relationships.

This article builds upon existing place-based research through the application of a socio-spatial perspective to make sense of how students’ experiences in/of place shape, and are shaped by, the production of experiential learning space. Rather than focusing on the individual as the unit of analysis, this article is concerned with understanding how knowledge was produced during a 3-week study abroad program to Morocco. Data were collected with eight participants through participant-observation and narratives in the form of eight reflective journals. We conduct a socio-spatial analysis of this data guided by Lefebvre’s spatial theory and offer three spatial readings of our findings including a diverse country of paradox, encountered histories, and positioned bodies through narrative. Findings suggest the production of experiential learning space was mediated through social interactions, engagement with local rhythms and histories, and intentional narrative activities. Engaging students with place is fundamental to the production of experiential learning space. Lefebvre’s spatial triad is a useful tool for pedagogical practice; its relational structure affords educators an opportunity to consider how learning spaces are socially produced via engagement with surrounding environments, and provides multiple entry points to engage students meaningfully with place.

After the 1989-1990 political changes the aim of the Hungarian University Sports Federation was to follow its traditions of nine decades in foreign policy as well, therefore the organization of international competitions in Hungary was promoted. Up to now the study of the management of these international events was neglected in the Hungarian scholarly literature, although all university sporting events held in Hungary were successful and they were highly appreciated internationally. Taking the example of three university world championships hosted by Hungarian towns, the objective of this paper is to analyze how the management succeeded to solve the major tasks of the organizational work and how some management theories were implemented in its activity. In order to collect data the following methods were used: analysis of documents, in-depth interviews and participant observation. The results are presented on the basis of some theses of the event planning theory, the event management theory, and the situational leadership theory. More specifically, the issues of motives-decisionactions, consistency- coherency- harmony and these of the quantity indicators of event organization in connection of the three underscored world championships organized in Hungary are discussed. In conclusion it is stated that in the management the situation theory had to be taken into consideration the most in the leading process. It was proven that despite preparations lasting often for several years and expanding to every detail of requirements, the flexibility of the management was crucial to search and to find response to every critical situation.

Traditional experiential learning techniques have been incorporated into public health curricula in the past; however, research has demonstrated the need for more applied and innovative approaches to experiential learning. We introduced an entrepreneurial pitch project where students had the opportunity to design and present technological and social innovations to an external panel of judges. We then evaluated the impact of such pitches on experiential learning by conducting semistructured, face-to-face interviews with student participants. The interview transcripts were analyzed in light of Kolb’s experiential learning theoretical framework. The results of the study indicated that the process of preparing and delivering entrepreneurial pitches was rewarding for students and enhanced their learning experience. The process provided students with concrete experiences and demonstrated elements of abstract conceptualization and active experimentation. However, the results also illustrated that the entrepreneurial pitch process could be strengthened by the addition of critical self-reflection activities. Through the results of this study, we have created a narrative on how entrepreneurial pitches might foster experiential learning in global health pedagogy and provided recommendations for course designers and instructors to consider in maximizing experiential learning for students.
