Abstract “Nanicão Corupá” (Musa acuminata) comes from Southern Brazil. The tropical climate in the region provides unique characteristics, including a sweeter flavor. This difference resulted in a Geographical Indication Recognition and Designation of Origin, recognized by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in Brazil. Considering that “Nanicão Corupá” has some peculiarities related to the climate and there are no studies evaluating this banana cultivars, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the qualitative and quantitative phenolic composition of the aerial parts of “Nanicão Corupá” by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS in comparison to 46 commercial standards of phenolic compounds. Aerial parts (flower, leaves, fruit and stem) of “Nanicão Corupá” were collected and macerated in methanolic extracts, which were partitioned with solvents of different polarities (dichloromethane and ethyl acetate). The HPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis was performed using the sample pre-treatment, chromatographic and mass spectrometer parameters. Results demonstrated that a total of 11 phenolic compounds were identified in the analyzed samples. The majority of compounds was identified in the ethyl acetate fraction (BFEF) of banana flowers: rutin (36.06 ± 0.23) and isoquercetin (28.83 ± 5). The compounds isoquercetin, naringerin and myricitrin were identified for the first time in the Musa genus.

Helicteres L. is one of the genera of the Sterculiaceae family with several remarkable activities. Previous studies revealed that terpenoids, flavonoids, and lignans are the dominant constituents of Helicteres species. However, information about this genus is scarce and unsystematic. Most of the phytochemical and pharmacological investigations have been mainly reported on Helicteres angustifolia and Helicteres isora, which are commonly used in China and Indonesia, respectively. In the present study, two terpenoids: 3β- O-acetylbetulinic acid (1) and simiarenol (2) together with three phenolic compounds: 4,4'-sulfinylbis(2-( tert-butyl)-5-methylphenol) (3), 7- O-methylisoscutellarein (4), 7,4'-di- O-methylisoscutellarein (5), and a mixture of stigmasterol and β-sitosterol were isolated and structurally elucidated from the aerial parts of Helicteres hirsuta Lour. Compounds 1-5 were tested for cytotoxicity on four human cancer cell lines: leukemia CCRF-CEM, breast MDA-MB-231, colon HCT116 and glioblastoma U251 cancer cells. Among them, compounds 1 and 3 showed moderate activity on CCRF-CEM and HCT116 cancer cells with IC50 values ranging from 14.6 to 31.5 μM (P < 0.05). This is the first time these compounds have been reported from this plant. To the best of our knowledge, compound 3 is novel in nature although it has been chemically synthesized before, and compounds 1, 2, and 4 are new to this plant family (Sterculiaceae).

The detailed investigation of a methanolic extract of aerial parts of Achillea pannonica SCHEELE. within a chemotaxonomic study led to the isolation of 6 flavonoid glycosides. Besides rutin, apigenin-7-O-glucopyranoside, luteolin-7-O-glucopyranoside, apigenin-7-O-rutinoside and acacetin-7-O-rutinoside, an unusual flavondiglucoside was isolated. Its structure was established by UV, 1HNMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic methods including 2D-NMR techniques and ESI-MS as luteolin-7,4′-O-β-diglucoside. This substance is reported for the first time in the genus Achillea. Chemotaxonomic aspects are discussed briefly

The aerial parts of three endemic Centaurea L. species, namely C. tomorosii Micevski, C. soskae Hayek and C. galicicae Micevski, afforded sesquiterpene lactone cnicin (1) and seven flavonoids: apigenin (2), isokaempferide (3), hispidulin (4), eupatorin (5), cirsimaritin (6), santaflavone (7) and salvigenin (8). The structures of the isolated compounds were determined by UV, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy and HR-ESI-MS spectrometry. 1H NMR spectroscopy was used as a method for quantitative analysis of sesquiterpene lactone cnicin.

Grape seeds are a copious part of the grape pomace produced by wine and juice industry and they represent an interesting source of phenolic compounds. Proanthocyanidins (PAs) are the main class of grape seed phenols and are important dietary supplements for their well-known beneficial properties. In this study enriched extracts obtained from Chardonnay and Pignoletto grape seeds were characterized for their proanthocyanidins and other minor phenolic compounds content and composition. Seed PAs were fractionated using Sephadex LH-20, using different ethanol aqueous solutions as mobile phase and analysed by normal phase HPLC-FLD-ESI-MS. Monomers, oligomers up to dodecamers and polymers were recorded in all samples. For both cultivars, the extracts showed a high content in PAs. The determination of other phenolic compounds was carried out using a HPLC-QqQ-ESI-MS and Chardonnay samples reported a greater content compared to Pignoletto samples. Contrary to PAs fraction, extracts obtained with ethanol/water 50/50 (v/v) presented a significant higher phenolic content than the others.
