In machine learning, we often face the situation where the event we are interested in has very few data points buried in a massive amount of data. This is typical in network monitoring, where data are streamed from sensing or measuring units continuously but most data are not for events. With imbalanced datasets, the classifiers tend to be biased in favor of the main class. Rare event detection has received much attention in machine learning, and yet it is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a remedy for the standing problem. Weighting and sampling are two fundamental approaches to address the problem. We focus on the weighting method in this paper. We first propose a boosting-style algorithm to compute class weights, which is proved to have excellent theoretical property. Then we propose an adaptive algorithm, which is suitable for real-time applications. The adaptive nature of the two algorithms allows a controlled tradeoff between true positive rate and false positive rate and avoids excessive weight on the rare class, which leads to poor performance on the main class. Experiments on power grid data and some public datasets show that the proposed algorithms outperform the existing weighting and boosting methods, and that their superiority is more noticeable with noisy data.

Neonicotinoids (NEO) represent the main class of insecticides currently in use, with thiamethoxam (THX) and clothianidin (CLO) primarily applied agriculturally. With few comprehensive studies having been performed with non-target amphibians, the aim was to investigate potential biomarker responses along an adverse outcome pathway of NEO exposure, whereby data were collected on multiple biological hierarchies. Juvenile African clawed frogs, Xenopus laevis, were exposed to commercial formulations of THX and CLO at high (100 ppm) and low (20 ppm) concentrations of the active ingredient. Mortality, growth, development, liver metabolic enzyme activity, and gene expression endpoints were quantified. Tadpoles (n > 1000) from NF 47 through tail resorption stage (NF 66) were exposed to NEO or to NEO-free media treatments. Liver cell reductase activity and cytotoxicity were quantified by flow cytometry. Compared to control reference gene expressions, levels of expression for NEO receptor subunits, cell structure, function, and decontamination processes were measured by RT-qPCR by using liver and brain. Mortality in THX high was 21.5% compared to the control (9.1%); the metabolic conversion of THX to CLO may explain these results. The NF 57 control tadpoles were heavier, longer, and more developed than the others. The progression of development from NF 57–66 was reduced by THX low, and weight gain was impaired. Liver reductases were highest in the control (84.1%), with low NEO exhibiting the greatest reductions; the greatest cytotoxicity was seen with THX high. More transcriptional activity was noted in brains than in livers. Results affirm the utility of a study approach that considers multiple complexities in ecotoxicological studies with non-target amphibians, underscoring the need for simultaneously considering NEO concentration-response relationships with both whole-organism and biomarker endpoints.

While the pulsating auroral phenomena have been recognized and studied for decades, our understating of their generation mechanisms remains incomplete to date. In one main class of pulsating auroras which is termed “patchy pulsating auroras” (PPA), the auroral patches are found to basically maintain their shape and size over many pulsation cycles. Also, PPAs are repeatedly found to essentially co-move with the ExB convection drift. The above properties led many researchers to hypothesize that PPA might connect to a structure of enhanced cold plasma in the magnetosphere. In this study, we review the existing evidence, and provide new perspective and support, of the low-energy plasma structure potentially associated with PPA. Based on observations from both the magnetosphere and the topside ionosphere, we suggest that ionospheric auroral outflows might constitute one possible source mechanism of the flux tubes with enhanced low-energy plasma that connect to the PPA. We also review the existing theories of pulsating auroras, with particular focus on the role of low-energy plasma in these theories. To date, none of the existing theories are complete and mature enough to offer a quantitatively satisfactory explanation of pulsating auroras. At last, we suggest a few future research directions to advance our understanding of pulsating auroras: a) more accurate measurements of the cold plasma density, b) more developed theories of the underlying mechanisms of ELF/VLF wave modulation, and c) auxiliary processes in the topside ionosphere or near-Earth region accompanying pulsating auroras.

Hybrid joining (HJ) is the combination of two or more joining techniques to produce joints with enhanced properties in comparison to those obtained from their parent techniques. Their adoption is widespread (metal to metal joint, composite to composite and composite to metal) and is present in a vast range of applications including all industrial sectors, from automotive to aerospace, including naval, construction, mechanical and utilities. The objective of this literature review is to summarize the existing research on hybrid joining processes incorporating structural adhesives highlighting their field of application and to present the recent development in this field. To achieve this goal, the first part presents an introduction on the main class of adhesives, subdivided by their chemical nature (epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic and cyanoacrylate, anaerobic and high-temperature adhesives) The second part describes the most commonly used Hybrid Joining (HJ) techniques (mechanical fastening and adhesive bonding, welding processes and adhesive bonding) The third part of the review is about the application of adhesives in dependence of performance, advantage and disadvantage in the hybrid joining processes. Finally, conclusions and an outlook on critical challenges, future perspectives and research activities are summarized. It was concluded that the use of hybrid joining technology could be considered as a potential solution in various industries, in order to reduce the mass as well as the manufacturing cost.

In recent years, significant progress has been achieved in developing natural drugs derived from medicinal plants. Multiple in-vitro screening studies reported that some naturally occurring compounds could possess inhibitory activity against various human viruses. The presented work describes significant biological activities of the main class of secondary metabolites such as phenolic compounds and terpenes located in industrially important tree species Norway spruce (Picea Abies) and Scots pine (Pinus Sylvestris). Phytochemicals show promising in vitro antiviral and cytotoxic activities, making them an attractive starting material for new development in various pharmaceutical products. They have the potential to effectively protect human health against cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and as therapeutic agents against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The present work is an evaluation of the chemical composition of the aroma and the sensorial characters of a beer flavored with Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flowers. Moreover, the total polyphenol, flavonoid and anthocyanin contents and the antioxidant activity of the plant materials and beers were assessed. A comparison with a liqueur flavored with the same hibiscus flowers was also performed. Non-terpene derivatives constituted the main class of components of the aroma of both samples, representing 96.4% of the whole volatilome in the control beer and 99.0% in the hibiscus one. Among this class, esters were the most abundant compounds, being significantly higher in the treated sample (77.6%) than in the control (68.4%), followed by the alcohols (20.9% in control beer and 18.8% in hibiscus beer). From a sensorial point of view, the control beer was characterized by malty and hoppy notes, attributable to the noticeable content in myrcene and α-humulene in its headspace, while in the hibiscus beer, floral and fruity notes, typical of esters and alcohols, prevailed. The polyphenol content was significantly higher in the treated beer (143.96 mg/g) than in the control, as well as the total flavonoids and the total anthocyanins, and, consequently, the antioxidant activity (DPPH-assay).

Meningococcal disease has been a public health problem in Brazil since the serogroups A and C epidemics occurred in the 1970s. The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil has been working to develop a serogroup B meningococcal vaccine composed of detergent-treated outer membrane vesicles (OMV) and detoxified endotoxin (dLOS) from Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B prevalent strains. Experimental vaccine were produced in a pilot-scale under Good Manufacturing Practice condition (GMP). Physicochemical and biological controls were established based on what has been reported previously for OMV vaccines. The developed  vaccine contained the main class 1, 2, 3, and 5 proteins, some minor iron-regulated proteins, and 5–10% residual lipopolysaccharide related to total protein content. The dLOS was added, as a vaccine component, in half of the total protein amount. The pyrogenicity of the final products, based on the residual LOS in OMVs, varied from 1.01 to 2.24 ng LOS/kg rabbit. Three experimental vaccines, were highly immunogenic in mice with better performance using higher antigen concentrations.

Cannabis sativa L. is an annual species cultivated since antiquity for different purposes. While, in the past, hemp inflorescences were considered crop residues, at present, they are regarded as valuable raw materials with different applications, among which extraction of the essential oil (EO) has gained increasing interest in many fields. The aim of the present study is the evaluation of the yield and the chemical composition of the EO obtained by hydrodistillation from eleven hemp genotypes, cultivated in the same location for two consecutive growing seasons. The composition of the EOs was analyzed by GC–MS, and then subjected to multivariate statistical analysis. Sesquiterpenes represented the main class of compounds in all the EOs, both in their hydrocarbon and oxygenated forms, with relative abundances ranging from 47.1 to 78.5%; the only exception was the Felina 32 sample collected in 2019, in which cannabinoids predominated. Cannabinoids were the second most abundant class of compounds, of which cannabidiol was the main one, with relative abundances between 11.8 and 51.5%. The statistical distribution of the samples, performed on the complete chemical composition of the EOs, evidenced a partition based on the year of cultivation, rather than on the genotype, with the exception of Uso-31. Regarding the extraction yield, a significant variation was evidenced among both the genotypes and the years of cultivation.

Metastatic bone cancer occurs in every type of cancer but is prevalent in lung, breast, and prostate cancers. These metastases can cause extensive morbidity, including a range of skeletal-related events, often painful and linked with substantial hospital resource usage. The treatment used is a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. However, anticancer drugs are still limited due to severe side effects, drug resistance, poor blood supply, and non-specific drug uptake, necessitating high toxic doses. Bisphosphonates are the main class of drugs utilized to inhibit metastatic bone cancer. It is also used for the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone diseases. However, bisphosphonate also suffers from serious side effects. Thus, there is a serious need to develop bisphosphonate conjugates with promising therapeutic outcomes for treating metastatic bone cancer and osteoporosis. This review article focuses on the biological outcomes of designed bisphosphonate-based conjugates for the treatment of metastatic bone cancer and osteoporosis.

Background: The severity of Degenerative Cervical Spinal Stenosis (DCSS) is currently assessed by determining the sagittal diameter of the spinal canal, the degree of narrowing, and the level of stenosis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of our study was to develop and evaluate an optimized, MRI-based classification of DCSS to support treatment decision-making. Methods: We analyzed preoperative MRI scans of 75 patients to determine key morphological features of DCSS. Based on the features found, a classification was proposed and tested on ten representative image sets by 53 neurosurgeons to determine practicability and inter-observer reliability. Results: DCSS extended over one (13 and 17 % of pat.), two (23 and 31 % of pat.) or three (39 and 52 % of pat.). Thickening of the ligaments was observed in 71%, scoliosis in 3% and grade I spondylolisthesis in 11% of the patients. The DCSS classification has three main Types (A, B, C), which differ in the extent of the stenoses and thickening of the ligaments. Each main class has 2-3 subtypes depending on the position of the stenosis (lateral/medial) and the number of stenotic segments. An additional suffix indicates the presence of concomitant pathology (spondylolisthesis, scoliosis). 26 (49 %) neurosurgeons rated the classification as useful. For the main classes, interobserver reliability was fair (k=0.23). For subtype and concomitant pathology, interobserver reliability was low (k=0.14). Conclusions: In the study a new classification system for degenerative spinal stenoses was developed, which combines anatomical and clinical defect characteristics. Deviations in the classification result from a strict subdivision, so that adjustments are necessary.
