Two potential mechanisms for terminating delayed hypersensitivity (DH) reactions have been examined in desensitized guinea pigs. Lack of macrophage responsiveness to lymphokines was sought as an explanation for the reduced ability of these animals to express delayed hypersensitivity. Skin-reactive factor was injected into the skin of desensitized guinea pigs and a control group of similarly immunized animals. The resulting inflammatory reactions were similar in size and intensity in both groups indicating normal macrophage responsiveness in the desensitized state. Passive cellular transfer of DH responses to desensitized animals was markedly less successful than transfer to normal animals. However, cells from desensitized guinea pigs did transfer DH responsiveness to normal animals. These data support the concept of a humoral suppressant of cellular immunity, perhaps acting as a feedback inhibitor, produced when guinea pigs are desensitized.

Considering the particular danger of remote skin reactions to ultraviolet irradiation (UVI), it is advisable to use ointments with antioxidant activity to reduce its negative effect on the skin. The rationale for the choice of ointments with antioxidant activity was the fact that they reduce the damaging effect of ultraviolet radiation in the erythemal and early post-erythemal period. The presence of a regular connection between the development of the early and late periods has given reason to assume the protective effect of ointments on the remote skin reactions. Objective: to study the effect of thiotriazoline ointment and thiotriazoline ointment with silver nanoparticles on the state of the morphological structures of the skin of guinea pigs after local UVI. Material and methods of research. The study involved 132 albino guinea pigs weighing 400-500 g, divided into 4 groups: 1 - intact, 2 - control (guinea pigs subjected to local UVI), 3 and 4 main ones. The third main group included guinea pigs that after UVI were administered thiotriazoline ointment in the treatment and prophylactic regime, the fourth main group included guinea pigs that after UVI were administered thiotriazoline ointment with silver nanoparticles in the same mode as Group 3. Ointments were applied 1 hour before irradiation and daily until erythema disappeared. Ultraviolet erythema was caused by irradiation in 1 minimum erythemal dose. After 2, 4 hours, on the 3rd, 8th, 15th, 21st, 28th day, the fragments of irradiated skin were investigated using histochemical and morphometric methods (fibroblast density and epidermis thickness). Results. Morphological changes in the skin after applying ointments with antioxidant activity were unidirectional. It was revealed that in the early periods after irradiation, thiotrazoline ointment and thiotrazoline ointment with silver nanoparticles do not affect changes in the thickness of the epidermis, but statistically significantly reduce the density of fibroblasts in the dermis on the 3rd day of the experiment compared to the control group. In the later periods, under the influence of thiotriazoline ointment, a gradual decrease in the thickness of the epidermis, which reached the norm by the end of the experiment, was observed. On the 8th day, the maximum density of fibroblasts was recorded, in the subsequent periods of the experiment, the index gradually decreased, which was accompanied by collagenization of the papillary layer in the loci of damage to collagen and elastic fibers detected in 50% of cases. In later times, under the influence of thiotriazoline ointment with silver nanoparticles, the processes of restoring the morphological structures of the skin occurred faster. In parallel with the decrease in the density of fibroblasts in the loci of the previous damage to the collagen and elastic fibers of the papillary layer, thickening of collagen fibers was observed, replacing them with segments of destruction of elastic fibers. In this group, at the end of the experiment, the collagenization locus was small, single, occurring in 16.7% of cases. Conclusions Ointments with antioxidant activity exert a positive effect on the state of morphological structures of the skin, damaged as a result of local UVI, in erythemal and post-erythemic periods. In the early periods after the local UVI, there was a general tendency for the effect of both ointments, as they reduced the density of fibroblasts on the 3rd day, but did not result in complete normalization. In the late period after local UVI , under the influence of thiotriazoline ointment and thiotriazoline ointment with silver nanoparticles, thickness of the epidermis (by 21st and 15th day, respectively) and density of fibroblasts (by the 28th day) decreased to normal while without treatment both indicators exceeded the norm by several times for 28 days of the experiment.

This study's purpose was to determine if a correlation exists between cochlear antioxidant activity changes and auditory function after induction of aminoglycoside (AG) ototoxicity. Two groups of five 250-350 g albino guinea pigs served as subjects. For 28 days, albino guinea pigs were administered either 200 mg/kg/day amikacin, or saline subcutaneously. Auditory brainstem response testing was performed prior to the first injection and again before sacrifice, 28 days later. Cochleae were harvested and superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione reductase activities and malondialdehyde levels were measured. All antioxidant enzymes had significantly lower activity in the amikacin group (p ≤ 0.05) than in the control group. The difference in cochlear antioxidant enzyme activity between groups inversely correlated significantly with the change in ABR thresholds. The greatest correlation was for the high frequencies, which are most affected by aminoglycosides. This study demonstrates that antioxidant enzyme activity and amikacin-induced hearing loss significantly covary.

Obesity has become a worldwide health problem, and many significant inflammatory markers have been associated with the risk of side effects of obesity and obesity-related diseases. After a normal diet or high-fat diet with high-fructose water (HFHF) for 8 weeks, male Wistar rats were divided randomly into four experimental groups according to body weight. Next, for 8 weeks, a normal diet, HFHF diet, and HFHF diet with L. plantarum strains ATG-K2 or ATG-K6 were administered orally. Compared to the control group, the HFHF diet group showed significantly increased visceral fat, epididymal fat, and liver weight. The mRNA and protein expression levels of FAS and SREBP-1c were higher in the HFHF diet group than in the HFHF diet with L. plantarum strains ATG-K2 and ATG-K6. The HFHF diet with L. plantarum strain ATG-K2 showed significantly decreased inflammatory cytokine expression in the serum and small intestine compared to the HFHF diet group. Furthermore, histological morphology showed minor cell injury, less severe infiltration, and longer villi height in the small intestine ileum of the HFHF diet with L. plantarum strains groups than in the HFHF diet group. These results suggest that L. plantarum strains K2 and K6 may help reduce intestinal inflammation and could be used as treatment alternatives for intestinal inflammatory reactions and obesity.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of electromagnetic field (EMF) emitted by cellular phones (CPs) on electrocardiograms (ECGs) of guinea pigs. A total of 30 healthy guinea pigs weighing 500–800 g were used. After 1 week of adaptation period, animals were randomly divided into two groups: control group ( n = 10) and EMF-exposed group ( n = 20). Control guinea pigs were housed in a separate room without exposing them to EMFs of CPs. Animals in second group were exposed to 890–915 MHz EMF (217 Hz of pulse rate, 2 W of maximum peak power and 0.95 wt kg−1 of specific absorption rate) for 12 h day−1 (11 h 45 min stand-by and 15 min speaking mode) for 30 days. ECGs of guinea pigs in both the groups were recorded by a direct writing electrocardiograph at the beginning and 10th, 20th and 30th days of the experiment. All ECGs were standardized at 1 mV = 10 mm and with a chart speed of 50 mm sec−1. Leads I, II, III, lead augmented vector right (aVR), lead augmented vector left (aVL) and lead augmented vector foot (aVF) were recorded. The durations and amplitudes of waves on the trace were measured in lead II. The data were expressed as mean with SEM. It was found that 12 h day−1 EMF exposure for 30 days did not have any significant effects on ECG findings of guinea pigs. However, this issue needed to be further investigated in a variety of perspectives, such as longer duration of exposure to be able to elucidate the effects of mobile phone-induced EMFs on cardiovascular functions.
