ABSTRACTFor a sol-gel process occurring in a water/oil (w/o) system, the self-assembly of silica nuclei can be controlled by close control of synthesis conditions. We have synthesized ellipsoidal or spherical silica particles by a template-free scheme that involves controlling surface tension on silica nuclei through via use of different volume ratios of a w/o micellar system.

AbstractControlled-shape BaTiO3-based microparticles were synthesized with the use of diatom microshells (frustules) as templates. The SiO2-based frustules of Aulacoseira diatoms were first converted into MgO-based replicas via a gas/solid displacement reaction at 900°C. A BaTiO3 coating was then applied to the MgO-bearing frustules by a sol-gel process. After firing at 700°C for 1.5 h, a conformal nanocrystalline coating of BaTiO3was generated on the surfaces of the MgO-bearing frustules. The underlying MgO scaffolds were then selectively dissolved away to yield freestanding 3-D BaTiO3-based replicas of the original Aulacoseira diatom frustules. This work demonstrates that microparticles with well-controlled 3-D morphologies and non-natural multicomponent ceramic compositions can be produced by merging the self-assembly ability of biomineralizing micro-organisms with synthetic chemical tailoring.

Inverse opal films (IOFs) of SnO2 doped with Pd were prepared by the self-assembly technique using polystyrene microsphere (PS sphere) as template in combination with a sol-gel method. The photocatalysis properties of SnO2 IOFs were estimated through measuring the rate of the degradation of methylene blue (MB). The result shows that SnO2 IOFs have good photocatalytic activity, the solution of MB was degradated over 60% in 4 hours when it was dipped in SnO2 IOFs and exposed in the UV light. The addition of Pd in SnO2 IOFs improved the photocatalytic activity of the films and the degradation of MB can exceed 80% with the same condition. This sort of SnO2 IOFs doped with Pd indicated a potential application in photocatalysis field.

ABSTRACTThe control of formation and ordering of self assembled nanostructures, with medium- to long-range order, is a challenge that limits advances in many fields of nanotechnology. We have developed a technique, which we call fluctuation x-ray microscopy, that offers quantitative insight into medium-range correlations in disordered materials at nanometer- and larger-length scales. We examined the influence of sol-gel process variables on medium range order in PI-b-PEO/ aluminosilicate bulk using this technique. The nano-structuring of inorganic materials was directed by polymer self-assembly. The medium range correlation between the nanostructures in two hybrids was quantitatively examined and compared.
