Single source-based energy and efficiency calibration method for the assessment of an alpha imaging detector

Abstract An alpha imaging detector acquires a two-dimensional distribution of a sample that emits alpha particles. For the quantitative analysis of the image of an alpha-emitting sample, the individual energies of the alpha particles must be identified, which can be achieved using the spectrometric method after detector calibration. In this study, an energy and efficiency calibration method was investigated to assess an alpha imaging detector. The calibration was performed using a single standard source of Am-241 based on the energy loss characteristic of an alpha particle. The feasibility of the calibration method was evaluated using another source, Ac-225. The calibrated alpha imaging detector was evaluated in terms of energy resolution and detection efficiency, and the alpha imaging detector was found to be efficiently calibrated using a single standard source. The calibrated alpha imaging detector appears promising for the quantitative analysis of samples that emit alpha particles.

Abstract The Segmented Gamma Scanner(SGS) technology is specially used for type identification and activity quantitative analysis of radioactive material in sealed containers, which mainly divided into the transmission measurement and the emission measurement. In actual measurement process, it cannot meet the need for rapid analysis because the efficiency calibration time takes up more than 60% of the whole detect time in the data analysis. Whereas most previous research have focused on theory or specific applications, this research groups aim to different aspects of the SGS technique and direct it at an audience with interests in the need for rapid analysis. The Monte Carlo simulation calculation models were established by the passive efficiency calibration method, and then the detection efficiency database was carried out based on the experimental verification. Lots of work was used to analysis the influence of crosstalk between layers and interpolation step. Furthermore, the database was implanted into the control and analysis system to complete the measurement experiments. The results show the measuring time of single waste drums is about 30 min, and the average relative deviation is less than 10%, so the problem that the time taken to calibrate the detection efficiency is too long has been solved effectively. The efficiency in the use of SGS technology has been increased.

Since cobots are designed to be flexible, they are frequently repositioned to change the production line according to the needs; hence, their working area (user frame) needs to be often calibrated. Therefore, it is important to adopt a fast and intuitive user frame calibration method that allows even non-expert users to perform the procedure effectively, reducing the possible mistakes that may arise in such contexts. The aim of this work was to quantitatively assess the performance of different user frame calibration procedures in terms of accuracy, complexity, and calibration time, to allow a reliable choice of which calibration method to adopt and the number of calibration points to use, given the requirements of the specific application. This has been done by first analyzing the performances of a Rethink Robotics Sawyer robot built-in user frame calibration method (Robot Positioning System, RPS) based on the analysis of a fiducial marker distortion obtained from the image acquired by the wrist camera. This resulted in a quantitative analysis of the limitations of this approach that only computes local calibration planes, highlighting the reduction of performances observed. Hence, the analysis focused on the comparison between two traditional calibration methods involving rigid markers to determine the best number of calibration points to adopt to achieve good repeatability performances. The analysis shows that, among the three methods, the RPS one resulted in very poor repeatability performances (1.42 mm), while the three and five points calibration methods achieve lower values (0.33 mm and 0.12 mm, respectively) which are closer to the reference repeatability (0.08 mm). Moreover, comparing the overall calibration times achieved by the three methods, it is shown that, incrementing the number of calibration points to more than five, it is not suggested since it could lead to a plateau in the performances, while increasing the overall calibration time.

Abstract Early detection of corrosion in well casings is of great importance to oil and gas well management. A typical well completion includes a production tubing inside a number of nested casings, which provide necessary well integrity and environmental protections. A multifrequency electromagnetic pipe inspection tool with multiple transmitter and receiver arrays was designed to accurately estimate the individual wall thicknesses of up to five nested pipes. The tool uses an axis-symmetric forward model to invert for wall thicknesses, among other pipe parameters. However, in cases where production occurs from two or more segregated zones, the well is generally equipped with more than one production tubing, which breaks the axial symmetry. In this paper, we show how the tool can further be employed to inspect the integrity of non-nested tubulars, such as dual completions. The performance of the tool is demonstrated using a full-scale yard mockup with known defects. A data-processing workflow, including multizone calibration and model-based inversion, is proposed to estimate the tubulars electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability, wall thickness, and eccentricity. An in-situ, multizone calibration method is applied to remove adjacent tubings influence, thus enabling accurate estimation of the thickness of outer casings without having to pull out the production tubing. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the tool in wells with dual completions, a log was run in a 150 ft-long yard mockup with two strings of 2⅞ inch. tubing, two outer casing strings, and four different man-made defects on the casings. The tool is logged inside each of the tubing strings, and the two logs are inverted for the thickness and eccentricity of the tubing as well as the thickness of outer casings. Results from the yard test reveal that when the tool is logged in one tubing, it can accurately detect various kinds of defects on outer casings, even in the presence of a second tubing. The interference from the second tubing is shown to be minimal due to the employed calibration algorithm. A high degree of consistency is seen between the logs run in each tubing string. This suggests that if the goal is solely to monitor corrosion in the outer casings, it suffices to run the tool in only one of the tubing strings, further cutting nonproductive time. The techniques presented here enable pipe integrity monitoring without pulling the production tubings; tubings, therefore, minimizing inspection time and cost. The information provided by this tool can significantly improve the efficiency of well intervention operations, especially in areas with high corrosion rates.

Aims. The microlensing surveys MACHO, EROS, MOA and OGLE (hereafter called MEMO) have searched for microlensing toward the Large Magellanic Cloud for a cumulated duration of 27 years. We study the potential of joining these databases to search for very massive objects, that produce microlensing events with a duration of several years. Methods. We identified the overlaps between the different catalogs and compiled their time coverage to identify common regions where a joint microlensing detection algorithm can operate. We extrapolated a conservative global microlensing detection efficiency based on simple hypotheses, and estimated detection rates for multi-year duration events. Results. Compared with the individual survey searches, we show that a combined search for long timescale microlensing should detect about ten more events caused by 100 M⊙ black holes if these objects have a major contribution to the Milky Way halo. Conclusions. Assuming that a common analysis is feasible, meaning that the difficulties that arise from using different passbands can be overcome, we show that the sensitivity of such an analysis might enable us to quantify the Galactic black hole component.

Images of the same object taken by multiple different cameras should have the same color reproduction. However, the images sometimes show different color reproduction due to the individual differences of cameras or internal camera parameters automatically determined when the images are taken. Conventional color transfer methods can be used for unifying the color reproduction of images by transforming the color distribution of an image to that of a reference image. However, conventional methods do not always lead to a good color reproduction and sometimes result in the loss of color impression of original images. In the present paper, we propose a color calibration method for images of the same object taken by different cameras. Two color transfer methods are combined to realize color calibration without the loss of color impression of an original image. Resultant images obtained by the color transfer methods are appropriately mixed into an output image. In experiments, the proposed method is applied to a variety of images and the effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed by subjective and objective evaluations.
