Abstract The effect of modified proprietary poultry feed on cholesterol excretion in laying birds was evaluated. The study sort to lower the cholesterol content of eggs at the point of their physiological formation via a modification of the proprietary feed fed to laying poultry birds. This was with a view to lower the net cholesterol content in their eggs, thereby lowering the cholesterol levels available in such eggs for intake upon consumption. A 20% rice bran modification of the proprietary feed was made. Animal subjects were divided into experimental and control groups and the mean total cholesterol in their faecal droppings where determined before and after varying their feeding programs. Whereas the experimental group was fed with the modified feed, the control group was maintained on the unmodified feed. Enzymatic colorimetric method was used for the determination of mean total cholesterol in the dried faecal droppings of each group of birds under investigation. The results showed that the mean total cholesterol excretion before and after the modified feed regimen were 5.97±0.16 mg/g and 9.99±0.47 mg/g respectively and were found to be significantly different when compared using a t-test at p > 0.05 and 49 degree of freedom The results also showed that the modified proprietary poultry feed increased total cholesterol excretion in the faecal droppings of laying birds fed with the modified feed by 67.3%, and this was found to be statistically significant at p > 0.05. Hence, a 20% rice-bran modification of the proprietary feed yields a modified feed with a proven potency in elevating total cholesterol excretion while producing no drastic deviation from the proximate composition of the unmodified proprietary feed and is thus likely to have no adverse effect on the productivity of laying birds.

In the present study, sterilized rice bran was fermented for 48, 72 and 96 hours by Aspergillus flavus and proximate analysis indicated that fermentation changed nutritive value of the rice bran. Four experimental feeds were fed to 4 groups of day old broiler chicks for 6 weeks to evaluate their effects on broiler performance (weekly feed intake, weight gain, FCR and mortality). During first 2 weeks, birds of group D showed significant difference (P less than 0.05) in feed intake and weight gain as compared to groups A (control), B and C. All groups did not show significant differences in feed conversion ratios (FCR). During 3rd week of trial, chickens of Group D showed significant difference (P less than 0.05) in feed intake, weight gain and FCR as compared to group A. During last 3 weeks, birds in group D showed significant difference (P less than 0.05) in feed intake, weight gain and FCR as compared to birds of groups A, B and C. Group D showed significantly higher weight gain and better FCR (P less than 0.05) as compared to groups A, B and C. On the whole, broiler chickens fed on 96 hours fermented rice bran showed best growth performance. In-vivo phytase activity was determined in ash of tibia bones collected from selected birds in each group. Group D showed significantly high percentage (P less than 0.05) of ash and phosphorus in tibia bones as compared to groups A (control), B and C. In conclusion, fermented rice bran showed beneficial effect on broiler performance and could be used in poultry feed as phytase source.

Abstract A pilot project research has been conducted to eliminate odor pollution from the feed mill industry. The feed industry in Indonesia has grown, especially in poultry feed production produced in modern feed mills equipped with pelleting technology. This industry is also having an environmental impact in the form of air pollution of its production activities. The laboratory analysis showed that ammonia has emitted, and it was the dominant parameter as the cause of odor in air pollution. This research aims to remove ammonia emissions using dry filtration technology with activated carbon as the filter media in the upright reactor. The reactor is designed from stainless steel material, consisting of 3 trays. The distance between trays is 300 mm, the dimensions of the tray are L.2430 mm, W.1815 mm, H.600 mm, the tray hole diameter is 3 mm. The average gas flow rate is 200-300 Nm3/min. Activated carbon used granules, size 6-8 mm, 200 mm thick in the tray. The results showed that the efficiency of ammonia removal was 81.96%-94.40% and had met the quality standards. This technology is feasible to control ammonia as an odor pollutant in the feed mill industry.

The study aims to examine the profitability and forward linkage analysis of poultry feed covering Dhaka, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Kishoreganj and Mymensingh districts. In total 30 feed mills which categorized such as high, medium and low quality on the basis of feed conversion ratio along with 45 dealers; 15 sub-dealers and 120 farmers purposively. The primary data were collected during March 2013 to March 2014 by using survey schedule, KII and FGD. In addition, the secondary data were collected from different government documents. It is evident that the cost of feed was found Tk. 39295, Tk. 38643 and Tk. 37218 per MT (metric ton) respectively for high, medium and low quality feed mills. The gross returns were found Tk. 43160, Tk. 42330 and Tk. 40500 per MT and gross margin was Tk. 6486, Tk. 5957 and Tk. 5285 per MT respectively. The net returns were found Tk. 3865, Tk. 3687and Tk. 3279.2 per MT respectively. It indicates that total gross return, gross margin and net return of high quality feed mill is higher than medium and low quality feed mill. It is also evident that about 60% of raw materials were purchased from Dinajpur, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Jamalpur and coastal areas namely Bagergerhat, Chittagong and Khulna where as 100 percent of feed additives were imported. The unavailability of raw materials was the major problems for feed mills operation which influenced feed price and quality. Palm kernel cake (PKC) with the protein content 14-21% and crude fiber about 17.63% is a by product of palm kernel oil. Utilization of PKC as source of protein for poultry feed is still limited. While demand of feed is getting increased. Therefore, the technology to improve PKC quality is needed to optimalize using PKC. This paper inform any efforts to improve the quality of PKC through fermentation technology and addition of enzymes and their utilization as poultry feed ingredient. Fermentation process of PKC can be done using single bacteria, mold or combination of them. By fermentation technology, the protein of PKC increased up to 88% (from 13-15% to 16-28%) and crude fiber decreased by 28% (from 17 to 12.21%). Palm kernel cake after fermentation can substitute soybean meal up to 18%, can be used up to 21% in broiler ration, and up to 25% in layer ration. Enzyme addition could increase metabolisable energy. Fermented PKC and enzyme addition can improve feed efficiency and feed conversion, and reduce abdominal fat in the broiler. Fermentation technology and addition of enzyme to PKC could improve the nutritional quality of PKC.
