AbstractMilky seas are a rare form of marine bioluminescence where the nocturnal ocean surface produces a widespread, uniform and steady whitish glow. Mariners have compared their appearance to a daylit snowfield that extends to all horizons. Encountered most often in remote waters of the northwest Indian Ocean and the Maritime Continent, milky seas have eluded rigorous scientific inquiry, and thus little is known about their composition, formation mechanism, and role within the marine ecosystem. The Day/Night Band (DNB), a new-generation spaceborne low-light imager, holds potential to detect milky seas, but the capability has yet to be demonstrated. Here, we show initial examples of DNB-detected milky seas based on a multi-year (2012–2021) search. The massive bodies of glowing ocean, sometimes exceeding 100,000 km2 in size, persist for days to weeks, drift within doldrums amidst the prevailing sea surface currents, and align with narrow ranges of sea surface temperature and biomass in a way that suggests water mass isolation. These findings show how spaceborne assets can now help guide research vessels toward active milky seas to learn more about them.

A flux damping control strategy was proposed to accelerate the decay of stator flux and restrain stator, rotor current and torque oscillation caused by grid voltage dips. Firstly, this paper analyzes the simplified mathematical model of DFIG during symmetrical voltage dips. Then, the mechanism of flux damping control strategy to restrain stator, rotor current oscillation and increase flux damping was analyzed. The flux damping control strategy can increase the damping of stator side, which accelerates the decay of the stator flux natural component and improve the dynamic LVRT performance of DFIG. The correctness and effectiveness of this method is verified by MATLAB/Simulink simulation results.

In many areas of application, the influence of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) on the composition of organic pollutants is still unexplored. In this study, sewage sludge (SS) was carbonized and the input as well as the hydrochar were examined for the organic pollutants: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated dibenzo-furans (PCDFs). The process temperatures of carbonization were 200 °C, 220 °C, and 240 °C and the holding time was 5 h for all tests. The total concentration of PCBs was relatively stable for all temperatures, whereas the toxicity equivalent (WHO-TEQ) at 200 °C and 220 °C increases compared to the input material. The strongest impact on toxicity was observed for PCDDs where concentrations were reduced for higher temperatures, whereas the toxicity increases by more than 16 times for temperatures of 240 °C. The concentrations and toxicity of PCDFs were reduced for all carbonization temperatures. In hydrochar from HTC at 240 °C, the limit values for the application of SS in German agriculture have been exceeded. The results indicate that the process conditions for HTC should be controlled also for SS with average contamination if the hydrochar is to be used as material, especially in agriculture.

Abstract Networking is not only essential for success in academia, but it should also be seen as a natural component of the scholarly profession. Research is typically not a purely individualistic enterprise. Academic social network sites give researchers the ability to publicise their research outputs and connect with each other. This work aims to investigate the use done by Italian scholars of 11/D2 scientific field. The picture presented shows a realistic insight into the Italian situation, although since the phenomenon is in rapid evolution results are not stable and generalizable.

The aim of the article is to assess the average long-term background hydrochemical input of chemical elements and organic matter from the flows of the natural component of the environment "Rivers" flowing into the South, Selenginsky, Middle and North reservoirs of Lake. Baikal. The results of calculation of the average annual amount (g/year) of chemical elements and organic matter (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al, Si, Mn2+, Feобщ , SO42-, HCO3-, Cl-, NO3-, PO43-, Cr, Cu, Cd, Hg, Pb, Sr, Zn, Co, U, V, Mo, Cорг, Nорг, Pорг, Sорг, CO2, Ti) in the streams of the natural component of the environment "Rivers" flowing into the South, Selenginsky, Sredniy, Severny reservoirs of Lake Baikal are presented. The scale of the river chemical input into the reservoirs and the contribution of the "River" flows to the chemical balances of these reservoirs have been determined. It has been established that only in the Selenga reservoir the rivers carry a significant amount of matter (about 3%). The contribution of river flows to the chemical balance of the reservoir is 3.54; 5.4; 17.5 and 21.5% in the South, Selenga, Middle and North reservoirs, respectively. The rivers flowing into the Selenga reservoir carry 70.6% of the total amount of matter brought by the rivers into the lake. Whereas the rivers of the Northern, Middle and Southern reservoirs carry 14.0; 11.6 and 3.8% of the matter. Only in the Selenga and Northern reservoirs, the rivers (tributaries) are the main sources of macrocomponents (K+, Na+, Ca2+, SO42-, CO3-, Cl-), a number of microcomponents (Rb, Mo, Hg, Sr, and Cu and Zn in the Selenga river-), organic matter (Corgг, Norg, Porg), and biogenic components in the Selenga reservoir (NO3-).

Fritz Heinrich Lewy described the intracytoplasmic inclusions found in the neurons for the very first time. In 1919 these inclusions were termed as “LBs” by Tretiakoff. LBs were found in the brain of the patients suffering from Lewy body disease (LBD). LBD is characterized by the presence of Parkinsonian symptoms in the earlier stages and dementia in the later stages of the disease. LBs were classified on the basis of the region of the brain in which they are distributed and so is the case of the LBD means the type of the LBD depends on the anatomical areas of the brain involved. LBD is not a single disorder. It is a spectrum of disorders. This chapter addresses the entire profile of LBs, types, composition, formation, and various LB pathologies as well as diagnostic criteria and pharmacotherapy.
