The maximal information coefficient (MIC) captures both linear and nonlinear correlations between variable pairs. In this paper, we proposed the BackMIC algorithm for MIC estimation. The BackMIC algorithm adds a searching back process on the equipartitioned axis to obtain a better grid partition than the original implementation algorithm ApproxMaxMI. And similar to the ChiMIC algorithm, it terminates the grid search process by the χ 2 -test instead of the maximum number of bins B( n , α ). Results on simulated data show that the BackMIC algorithm maintains the generality of MIC, and gives more reasonable grid partition and MIC values for independent and dependent variable pairs under comparable running times. Moreover, it is robust under different α in B( n , α ). MIC calculated by the BackMIC algorithm reveals an improvement in statistical power and equitability. We applied (1-MIC) as the distance measurement in the K-means algorithm to perform a clustering of the cancer/normal samples. The results on four cancer datasets demonstrated that the MIC values calculated by the BackMIC algorithm can obtain better clustering results, indicating the correlations between samples measured by the BackMIC algorithm were more credible than those measured by other algorithms.

The diagonal effect of orders is well documented in different markets, which states that the orders are more likely to be followed by the orders of the same aggressiveness and implies the presence of short-term correlations in order flows. Based on the order flow data of 43 Chinese stocks, we investigate if there are long-range correlations in the time series of order aggressiveness. The detrending moving average analysis shows that there are crossovers in the scaling behaviors of overall fluctuations and order aggressiveness exhibits linear long-term correlations. We design an objective procedure to determine the two Hurst indexes delimited by the crossover scale. We find no correlations in the short term and strong correlations in the long term for all stocks except for an outlier stock. The long-term correlation is found to depend on several firm specific characteristics. We also find that there are nonlinear long-term correlations in the order aggressiveness when we perform the multifractal detrending moving average analysis.

Background: In data analysis and machine learning, we often need to identify and quantify the correlation between variables. Although Pearson’s correlation coefficient has been widely used, its value is reliable only for linear relationships and Distance correlation was introduced to address this shortcoming. Methods: Distance correlation can identify linear and nonlinear correlations. However, its performance drops in noisy conditions. In this paper, we introduce the Association Factor (AF) as a robust method for identification and quantification of linear and nonlinear associations in noisy conditions. Results: To test the performance of the proposed Association Factor, we modeled several simulations of linear and nonlinear relationships in different noise conditions and computed Pearson’s correlation, Distance correlation, and the proposed Association Factor. Conclusion: Our results show that the proposed method is robust in two ways. First, it can identify both linear and nonlinear associations. Second, the proposed Association Factor is reliable in both noiseless and noisy conditions.

In 1977, Shepherd and colleagues reported significant correlations (–.90, –.91) between speechreading scores and the latency of a selected negative peak (VN 130 measure) on the averaged visual electroencephalic wave form. The primary purpose of this current study was to examine the stability, or repeatability, of this relation between these cognitive and neurophysiologic measures over a period of several months and thus support its test-retest reliability. Repeated speechreading word and sentence scores were gathered during three test-retest sessions from each of 20 normal-hearing adults. An average of 56 days occurred from the end of one to the beginning of another speechreading sessions. During each of four other test-retest sessions, averaged visual electroencephalic responses (AVER s ) were evoked from each subject. An average of 49 clays intervened between AVER sessions. Product-moment correlations computed among repeated word scores and VN l30 measures ranged from –.61 to –.89. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the VN l30 measure of visual neural firing time is a reliable correlate of speech-reading in normal-hearing adults.

Natural dyes were followed and prepared from a pomegranate, purple carrot, and eggplant peel. The absorbance spectra was measured in the wavelength range 300-800 nm. The linear properties measurements of the prepared natural dye freestanding films were determined include absorption coefficient (α0), extinction coefficient (κ), and linear refraction index (n). The nonlinear refractive index n2 and nonlinear absorption coefficient β2 of the natural dyes in the water solution were measured by the optical z-scan technique under a pumped solid state laser at a laser wavelength of 532 nm. The results indicated that the pomegranate dye can be promising candidates for optical limiting applications with significantly low optical limiting of 3.5 mW.

The vast majority of tissue production uses creping to achieve the required set of properties on the base sheet. The Yankee coating helps to develop the desired crepe that in turn determines properties such as bulk and softness. The adhesion of the sheet to the Yankee surface is a very important characteristic to consider in achieving the desired crepe. The coating mix usually consists of the adhesive, modifier, and release. A good combination of these components is essential to achieving the desired properties of the tissue or towel, which often are determined by trials on the machine that can be time consuming and lead to costly rejects. In this paper, five compositions of an industrial Yankee coating adhesive, modifier, and release were examined rheologically. The weight ratio of the adhesive was kept constant at 30% in all five compositions and the modifier and release ratios were varied. The normal force and work done by the different compositions have been shown at various temperatures simulating that of the Yankee surface, and the oscillatory test was carried out to explain the linear and nonlinear viscoelastic characteristic of the optimal coating composition.
