Abstract Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are getting involved in remediating Internet of Things (IoT) infections of end users. This endeavor runs into serious usability problems. Given that it is usually unknown what kind of device is infected, they can only provide users with very generic cleanup advice, trying to cover all device types and remediation paths. Does this advice work? To what extent do users comply with the instructions? And does more compliance lead to higher cleanup rates? This study is the first to shed light on these questions. In partnership with an ISP, we designed a randomized control experiment followed up by a user survey. We randomly assigned 177 consumers affected by malware from the Mirai family to three different groups: (i) notified via a walled garden (quarantine network), (ii) notified via email, and (iii) no immediate notification, i.e. a control group. The notification asks the user to take five steps to remediate the infection. We conducted a phone survey with 95 of these customers based on communication–human information processing theory. We model the impact of the treatment, comprehension, and motivation on the compliance rate of each customer, while controlling for differences in demographics and infected device types. We also estimate the extent to which compliance leads to successful cleanup of the infected IoT devices. While only 24% of notified users perform all five remediation steps, 92% of notified users perform at least one action. Compliance increases the probability of successful cleanup by 32%, while the presence of competing malware reduces it by 54%. We provide an empirical basis to shape ISP best practices in the fight against IoT malware.

<p>In this work, we present an economic model of computer networks that describes the in-teraction between Internet Service Providers (ISP ), customers and content provider. The competition between ISP s may be translated by the prices they require and the qualities of service (QoS) they offer. The customer demand for service from an ISP does not only de-pend on the price and quality of service (QoS) of the ISP , but it is influenced by all those offered by its competitors. This behavior has been extensively analyzed using game the-ory as a decision support tool. We interpret a non-neutral network when a content provider privileges ISP s by offering them more bandwidth to ensure proper QoS to support ap-plications that require more data transport capacity (voice over internet protocol (V OIP ) the live video streaming, online gaming). In addition, our work focuses on the price game analysis and QoS between ISP s in two cases: neutral network and non-neutral network. After showing the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium in terms of quality of service, we analyzed the impact of net neutrality on competition between ISP s. We also validated our theoretical study with numerical results, which show that the game has an equilibrium point which depends on all the parameters of the system.</p>

In this paper, we have studied the impact of customer confusion on the decision-making strategies of Internet service providers (ISP) in the network and telecommunications market. This confusion may come from several factors, e.g. incomplete information on the offer, non-transparent advertising, the ability of the analysis, etc.; but that sure varies over time since yesterday’s customer is no longer today’s. In this work, we have developed a simple oligopolistic model, using non-cooperative game theory, to formalize the interactions between service providers and end-users by considering that the rationality of customers varies over time. We assessed the impact of the dynamics of consumer confusion on the competition and profitability of service providers who are considered rational and competitive with one another to maximize their respective gains in the face of a confused fraction of consumers while others are not confused. We have shown the existence and uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium. We used the best response dynamic algorithm for learning Nash equilibrium. On the one hand, we have shown that when the number of confused customers is large, the ISP is interested in that and they offer moderately high prices with low quality of service. On the other hand, over time, rationality increases, forcing the ISPs to change their strategies by offering better services so that their demand increases. We also add that when customer behavior changes quickly, the ISPs follow clearer strategies with customer satisfactory services.

Background: Implementation of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program after pancreatic surgery was associated with decreased length of stay (LOS). However, there were only retrospective uncontrolled before-after study, and care protocols were heterogeneous. We aimed to evaluate the impact of ERAS program on postoperative outcomes after pancreatectomy through a prospective controlled study. Methods: A before/after study with a contemporary control group was undertaken in patients undergoing pancreatectomy. We compared 2 groups: the intervention hospital that implemented ERAS program and the control hospital that performed traditional care; and 2 periods: the preimplementation and the post-implementation period. A difference-in-differences approach was used to evaluate whether implementation of ERAS program was associated with improved LOS and postoperative morbidity. Results: About 97 and 75 patients were included in intervention and control hospital. In multivariate analysis, implementation of ERAS was associated with a significantly shorten LOS (hazard ratio 1.61; 95% CI 1.07–2.44) and higher compliance rate (OR 1.34; 95% CI 1.18–1.53). Difference-in-differences analysis revealed that LOS, morbidity, and readmission did not differ after ERAS implementation. Conclusion: Implementation of ERAS program was safe and effective after pancreatectomy with high compliance rate. LOS was significantly reduced without compromising morbidity

The proliferation of unsolicited commercial electronic mail (UCE) or spam is becoming a global concern for many organizations. This chapter explores issues of unsolicited email, the cost and loss of productivity, the impact of UCE and computer viruses, privacy concerns, electronic mail filters, attempts to control spam, and legislative action. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis was also applied in this study. The results of a survey concerning the perceptions of UCE are presented. The results clearly show that while the respondents find spam annoying, they spend very little time in dealing with it. Although the respondents express the need to control spam, they do not believe that governmental control is the solution, but rather that Internet Service Providers and organizations should take the responsibility for controlling unsolicited email. Lastly, the respondents are very unlikely to open, let alone read and respond to unsolicited email. The results of this study will be useful for guiding organizational, university, and public policies.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the Zero Markup drug (ZMD) policy on hospitalization expenses for inpatients in tertiary Chinese hospitals. Methods: Using the administrative data from hospital electronic health records (EHRs) between 2015 and 2017, we implemented the quantile difference-in-differences (QDID) estimators to evaluate the impact of the ZMD policy on hospitalization expenses while controlling for patient-level and hospital-level characteristics. Results: According to the QDID models, the introduction of ZMD policy significantly induced lower drug costs for all inpatients especially at the 50th (-USD 507.84 (SE = USD 90.91), 75th (-USD 844.77 (SE = USD 149.70), and 90th (-USD 1400.00 (SE = USD 209.97)) percentiles of the overall distributions. However, the total hospitalization, diagnostic, treatment, material and services expenses for inpatients were significantly higher for the treated group than the control group. This tendency was more pronounced for inpatients in tertiary hospitals with lower expenses (in the 10th, 25th and 50th percentiles). Conclusion: The implementation of ZMD policy alone may not be enough to change the medical service providers’ profit-driven behavior. The targeted supervision of hospital costs by the Chinese health administration department should be strengthened to avoid unreasonable hospital charges.

Network Monitoring System (NMS) is a system that is highly demanded internet service provider industry in this fast-developing information technology era. The availability of NMS is the best option to restore the service level agreement as a means to compete with other internet service providers’ competitors. The occurrence of disturbance in the network is often unnoticed by the network administrator. This may lead to a crucial problem in decreasing network quality as the impact of time-consuming in solving the problem. Through the explanation, the writer tried to anticipate by classifying problems using Pareto, and integrated Nagios with Telegram Messenger as a notification of disturbance. Nagios has many features such as reports, event handler, monitoring resource (CPU load, memory usage, status up / down, up time, data traffic, bandwidth), etc. One of notable feature owned by Nagios is blast notification of disturbance. It is a feature that will function when one of the devices is in trouble. This feature will inform the network administrator or authorized person in a certain divisions as regards the error network. In this case, the problematic device can be categorized according to the parameters made by the network administrator.

ABSTRAKHasil survei oleh Asosiasi Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia (APJII) pada tahun 2016 menunjukkan bahwa 51,8 persen dari 256,2 juta penduduk Indonesia merupakan pengguna internet dan 47,6 persennya menggunakan internet melalui gawai pribadi. Meskipun demikian, fenomena sosial mencatat tidak semua individu dapat menggunakan media sosial secara bijak. Hal itulah yang menjadi semangat kemitraan tim UMM dengan SMA 1 Muhammadiyah Malang dalam program pelatihan literasi digital. Pemahaman siswa tentang literasi digital dalam penggunaan media sosial masih minim. Siswa menguasai penggunaan media sosial popular seperi Instagram, Twitter maupun Facebook namun dampak media sosial seperti munculnya hoax, fenomena ‘firehose falsehood’ maupun efek domino lainnya belum terlalu mendapat perhatian. Program literasi digital dilaksanakan melalui 2 (dua) format. Pertama, Seminar dan Talkshow Literasi Digital yang terdiri dari topik perkembangan terkini media social, pengenalan tentang logika big data yang menentukan tajuk komposisi berita, dan pengenalan keamanan digital (cyber security). Kedua, sosialisasi berinternet secara bijak menggunakan instrumen buku saku (booklet) yang bertujuan memberikan pemahaman bagi siswa mengenai bagaimana penggunaan sosial media dan dampak positif negatif dalam berbagai perspektif studi kasus.Kata Kunci: internet; literasi; millenial; pelatihan; remaja Invites Generation Z of Muhammadiyah Malang 1 High School to Internet WiselyABSTRACTThe results of a survey by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) in 2016 showed that 51.8 percent of 256.2 million Indonesians were internet users and 47.6 percent used the internet through private devices. Students' understanding of digital literacy in the use of social media is still minimal. Students master the use of popular social media like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook but the impact of social media such as the emergence of hoaxes, the phenomenon of 'firehose falsehood' and other domino effects have not received much attention. Digital literacy program is carried out in 2 (two) formats. First, the Seminar and Digital Literacy Talkshow which consists of the latest developments in social media, the introduction of the logic of big data that determines the headline of news composition, and the introduction of digital security (cyber security). Second, internet socialization wisely uses a booklet instrument which aims to provide students with an understanding of how social media is used and its positive and negative impacts in a variety of case study perspectives.Keywords: internet; literacy; millennial; training; teenager
