Abstract Reducing sources of illness improves resident care. An advanced air purification technology (AAPT) was designed to destroy the DNA and RNA of all bacteria, fungi and viruses, rendering them non-infectious and to remediate volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study compares the biological, fungal and VOC loading using the AAPT to standard high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration. It was hypothesized that the AAPT would be associated with reductions in airborne and surface pathogens, VOCs and improved clinical metrics. A control floor with HEPA filtration and study floor with AAPT remediation were studied. Measurements of total VOCs and airborne and surface bacteria and fungi were measured in five locations on each floor. The facility acquired infection (FAI) rate, the number of infections divided by total patient days, showed a 57% difference between the control floor (2.33 FAIs/month) and the study floor (1.00 FAIs/month) and a decrease of 39.75% pre-installation (1.66 FAIs/month) to post-installation (1.00 FAIs/month). The viable pathogen loading measured on the study floor was reduced from an average of 483.8 colony forming units (CFU)/m3 pre-installation to an average of 56 CFU/m3 post-installation. VOCs were reduced from an average of 641.66 parts per billion (PPB) to 64.96 PPB and viable surface bacteria from an average of 110.6 CFU/m3 to 97.2 CFU/m3. The AAPT significantly reduced levels of infectious airborne and surface pathogens and VOC levels. As a result, residents on the AAPT floor demonstrated significant improvements in FAI rates. The findings support the hypothesis that environmental factors impact resident wellness.

Poly-L-ornithine has been used to introduce DNA and RNA into mammalian cells in culture. Ornithine-mediated DNA transfer has several interesting and potentially useful properties. The procedure is technically straightforward and is easily applied to either small or large numbers of recipient cells. The efficiency of transformation is high. Under optimal conditions, 1 to 2% of recipient mouse L cells take up and continue to express selectable marker genes. DNA content of transformants can be varied reproducibly, yielding cells with just one or two copies of the new gene under one set of conditions, while under a different set of conditions 25 to 50 copies are acquired. Cotransformation and expression of physically unlinked genes occur at high efficiency under conditions favoring multiple-copy transfer. Polyornithine promotes gene transfer into cell lines other than L cells. These include Friend erythroleukemia cells and NIH 3T3 cells. Both are transformed about 1 order of magnitude more efficiently by this procedure than by standard calcium phosphate products. However, the method does not abolish the large transformation efficiency differences between these cell lines that have been observed previously by other techniques. (vi) mRNA synthesized in vitro was also introduced into cells by this method. The RNA was translated resulting in a transient accumulation of the protein product.

UV-curable process is widely used for paints, inks and adhesives due to its rapid curing, low energy consumption, high efficiency and low volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The objective of this research is to prepare poly(lactic acid) (PLA) based UV-curable coating by using glycolyzed PLA. PLA was glycolyzed by ethylene glycol (EG) at 170°C for 90 minutes. The obtained glycolyzed PLA was reacted with methacrylic anhydride (MAAH) to provide PLA acrylate oligomer. The obtained PLA acrylate oligomer was used in coating formulations with various amounts of photoinitiator and cured under UV radiation. Physical properties of cured coating film were investigated such as pencil hardness, gloss and haze. The results showed that poly(lactic acid) (PLA) based UV-curable coating provided good physical properties.

Due to the consideration of fragile security, and longer check-in times and inconveniences due to increased air travel security examination since September 11th 2001, more and more people have turn to ground transportation. Unfortunately, the inefficient, environment-unfriendly and unsafe passenger cars and buses are the only choices available for middle distance trips. Development of high efficiency, clean and high speed railroad passenger transportation system has become more necessary to overcome this weak link. In this paper, the applicability of hybrid drive train technologies for middle-distance passenger train locomotives will be investigated. A systematic design of the diesel based hybrid locomotive helps to increase efficiency, improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and also reduce mass production costs. Furthermore, professional management and maintenance of railroad train locomotives make such new technologies more practical than for road vehicles. The success of such transportation system will have a great positive impact on our social activities, quality of life, energy supply, environment and economy. A diesel based hybrid electric locomotive (HEL) with batteries or an ultracapacitor is an option to reduce fuel consumption and emissions and provide better performance and fuel economy. The reduced fuel consumption helps reduce the amount of pollutants released. Engineering estimation indicate that emissions will be reduced by 70% and fuel efficiency will be increased by at least 30% in hybrid locomotives.

With its advantages of low cost and high efficiency, e-commerce is not only favored by ordinary consumers, but also effectively promotes SMEs to find business opportunities and win the market. This article starts with the development scale of China’s e-commerce industry and the status quo of export trade, and measures the overall index of China’s e-commerce industry development level from 2008 to 2018 through empirical methods to analyze its impact on China’s export trade. The results show that the development level of the e-commerce industry has a significant positive impact on China’s export trade. Finally, it analyzes the existing problems in the development of China’s e-commerce industry.

Background: Computers and telephones are ubiquitous in the hospital and have been shown to be contaminated with potentially pathogenic microorganism. The aim of the study was to determine microbial contamination on computer keyboards and telephone handsets and the effectiveness of a disinfecting technique (DT). Methods: A matched cross-over study, involving an overall of 50 computer keyboards and 50 telephone handsets, was conducted in three hospitals, located in the Local Health Area of Siena (Italy) before and after the use of an innovative DT consisting of a malleable-elastic compound, containing ethanol, which adheres to surfaces, removes dirt and disinfects. Total bacterial count was evaluated and several types of bacteria and fungi were researched pre- and post- use of the DT. Non parametric tests: Wilcoxon signed rank and Mann Whitney, were used, when appropriate. Results: The DT was effective in disinfecting the objects. In fact, Colony-Forming Units (CFUs) decreased to zero in most comparisons. All the comparisons showed significant differences (p<0.001) after the DT, both for computer keyboards and telephone handsets. The only exception was found for molds in telephones (p=0.062). Keyboards emerged to be dirtier than telephones handsets (p<0.05) for several types of bacteria. Conclusions: The data suggest that microbial contamination of keyboards and telephones is considerable. These objects can be a vehicle for Health Care-Associated Infections HAIs and their disinfection should not be neglected. The DT showed to be appropriate for the disinfecting purpose.
