Abstract Thinking about old age stereotypically affects one’s engagement in age-related behaviors and developmental regulation. We hypothesized that positive or negative aging stereotype (AS) would be associated with more or less aging preparation, while action-related thoughts and beliefs might exert influence thereon. We used the AAF online-study dataset consisting of 591 German, 348 Chinese, and 139 American adults (aged 18−93 and 55% female). Using a count measure of 15-preparatory-activities, we first explored the role of AS measured by a bipolar scale and how perceived utility and risk of aging preparation differentiate this association. Findings revealed that perceiving more utility buffered the impact of negative AS, which suggests that one’s action-related thoughts are more proximal and self-relevant predictor of aging preparation. Besides, Chinese and Americans were more susceptible to the presence of AS than Germans, implying that cultural background or societal conditions might also shape one’s belief system and thereby regulate behaviors.

The decline of speech intelligibility in presbycusis can be regarded as resulting from the combined contribution of two main groups of factors: (1) audibility-related factors and (2) age-related factors. In particular, there is now an abundant scientific literature on the crucial role of suprathreshold auditory abilities and cognitive functions, which have been found to decline with age even in the absence of audiometric hearing loss. However, researchers investigating the direct effect of aging in presbycusis have to deal with the methodological issue that age and peripheral hearing loss covary to a large extent. In the present study, we analyzed a dataset of consonant-identification scores measured in quiet and in noise for a large cohort (n = 459, age = 42–92) of hearing-impaired (HI) and normal-hearing (NH) listeners. HI listeners were provided with a frequency-dependent amplification adjusted to their audiometric profile. Their scores in the two conditions were predicted from their pure-tone average (PTA) and age, as well as from their Extended Speech Intelligibility Index (ESII), a measure of the impact of audibility loss on speech intelligibility. We relied on a causal-inference approach combined with Bayesian modeling to disentangle the direct causal effects of age and audibility on intelligibility from the indirect effect of age on hearing loss. The analysis revealed that the direct effect of PTA on HI intelligibility scores was 5 times higher than the effect of age. This overwhelming effect of PTA was not due to a residual audibility loss despite amplification, as confirmed by a ESII-based model. More plausibly, the marginal role of age could be a consequence of the relatively little cognitively-demanding task used in this study. Furthermore, the amount of variance in intelligibility scores was smaller for NH than HI listeners, even after accounting for age and audibility, reflecting the presence of additional suprathreshold deficits in the latter group. Although the non-sense-syllable materials and the particular amplification settings used in this study potentially restrict the generalization of the findings, we think that these promising results call for a wider use of causal-inference analysis in audiology, e.g., as a way to disentangle the influence of the various cognitive factors and suprathreshold deficits associated to presbycusis.

Abstract In the article, we consider the impact of adolescence upon the usage of Polish in Polish-German bilinguals raised and living in Germany and demonstrate how adolescence surfaces as a socially based “critical period” in this usage using results from a survey and interviews conducted with 30 teenagers. In the quantitative part of the study, we seek to establish whether adolescents’ age affected the pattern and quantity of their usage of Polish in the media and contacts with age peers, whether the latter two facets of growing up with Polish were interrelated, and which other factors affected peer-relevant activities in Polish. Both age and peer contact turned out to significantly affect the use of the media in Polish, while peer contact in Polish was affected by the parental use of Polish in parent-child communication. The qualitative part presents the context and motivation for using Polish by the youths in peer-relevant activities. We integrate the results with insights provided by child development psychology from the perspective of language socialisation theory and interpret the age-related decline of interest in the Polish media as an effect of a diminishing role of parents and the increasing role of age peers as role models in personal development.

A study was conducted to examine the role of concrete and formal operations in a young and old population. In addition, the present study explored the relation between operational thought and Cattell's concept of fluid and crystallized intelligence, as well as the role of differential living arrangements in maintaining operational thought. Eighty females from three age groups (18–20 years, 60–70 years and 70–80 years of age) were tested on a series of Piagetian tasks and indices of fluid and crystallized intelligence. The findings supported the notion that age-related performance differences occur in the area of formal operational thought prior to the time they occur in concrete operational thought. Except for the young sample, the operational tasks were found to be unrelated to fluid intelligence at the age levels represented in this study. Living independently as opposed to living in an old age home did not appear to be a significant factor in maintaining operational thought. Discussion focused on the necessity of identifying those factors which influence the developmental course of formal operational thought across the life span.

Demographic trends in the developed world indicate that older entrepreneurs will play an increasingly important part of economic activity as populations age, yet this cohort has been largely ignored in entrepreneurship research. This paper provides an overview of current research about the so-called "grey entrepreneur" (also known as senior, older, third age or elderly entrepreneurs), drawing on research from a number of nations. The extant literature indicates that a majority of older entrepreneurs are male, although the number of older female entrepreneurs is increasing; they are also less likely to possess formal educational qualifications than younger entrepreneurs. Some of the advantages that such entrepreneurs possess include greater levels of technical, industrial and management experience; superior personal networks; and a stronger financial asset base. Some of the disadvantages or potential barriers faced by older entrepreneurs can include lower levels of health, energy and productivity; ageism; and the value that his or her society places on active ("productive") ageing. Numerous issues still remain to be investigated in this field of research. These include the differences between younger and older entrepreneurs; their motives and success criteria; the impact of financial, knowledge and other resources on venturing behaviour; the role of government policies in fostering or hampering individual enterprise; and the significance of cultural differences amongst older entrepreneurs. Research in this field is currently also hampered by a multiplicity of terms and definitions, a lack of age-related data about different entrepreneurial cohorts, and the problems inherent in operationalising the concept of the "grey entrepreneur."

Cardiovascular diseases remain an age-related pathology in both men and women. These pathologies are 3-fold more frequent in men than in women before menopause, although this difference progressively decreases after menopause. The vasculoprotective role of estrogens are well established before menopause, but the consequences of their abrupt decline on the cardiovascular risk at menopause remain debated. In this review, we will attempt to summarize the main clinical and experimental studies reporting the protective effects of estrogens against cardiovascular diseases, with a particular focus on atherosclerosis, and the impact of aging and estrogen deprivation on their endothelial actions. The arterial actions of estrogens, but also part of that of androgens through their aromatization into estrogens, are mediated by the estrogen receptor (ER)α and ERβ. ERs belong to the nuclear receptor family and act by transcriptional regulation in the nucleus, but also exert non-genomic/extranuclear actions. Beside the decline of estrogens at menopause, abnormalities in the expression and/or function of ERs in the tissues, and particularly in arteries, could contribute to the failure of classic estrogens to protect arteries during aging. Finally, we will discuss how recent insights in the mechanisms of action of ERα could contribute to optimize the hormonal treatment of the menopause.

Background Clinical trials suggest that anesthetic-induced preconditioning (APC) produces cardioprotection in humans, but the mechanisms of APC and significance of aging for APC in humans are not well understood. Here, the impact of age on the role of two major effectors of APC, mitochondria and sarcolemmal adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium (sarcKATP) channels, in preconditioning of the human atrial myocardium were investigated. Methods Right atrial appendages were obtained from adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery and assigned to mid-aged (MA) and old-aged (OA) groups. APC was induced by isoflurane in isolated myocardium and isolated cardiomyocytes. Mitochondrial oxygen consumption measurements, myocyte survival testing, and patch clamp techniques were used to investigate mitochondrial respiratory function and sarcKATP channel activity. Results After in vitro APC with isoflurane, the respiratory function of isolated mitochondria was better preserved after hypoxia-reoxygenation stress in MA than in OA. In isolated intact myocytes, APC significantly decreased oxidative stress-induced cell death in MA but not in OA, and isoflurane protection from cell death was attenuated by the sarcKATP channel inhibitor HMR-1098. Further, the properties of single sarcKATP channels were similar in MA and OA, and isoflurane sensitivity of pinacidil-activated whole cell KATP current was no different between MA and OA myocytes. Conclusion Anesthetic-induced preconditioning with isoflurane decreases stress-induced cell death and preserves mitochondrial respiratory function to a greater degree in MA than in OA myocytes; however, sarcKATP channel activity is not differentially affected by isoflurane. Therefore, effectiveness of APC in humans may decrease with advancing age partly because of altered mitochondrial function of myocardial cells.

Purpose Equilibrium between red blood cells (RBC) production and clearance maintains an appropriate circulating RBC biomass. During anemia or hypoxia, a well-characterized hypoxia-dependent induction of erythropoietin (EPO) synthesis leads to an increase in RBC production. At the other extremity of the RBC lifespan, age-related modifications of RBC properties are expected to be recognized by the mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS) and trigger their clearance. We reasoned that, like RBC production, RBC clearance might be physiologically regulated by hypoxia and therefore that its downregulation could contribute to maintain an appropriate RBC biomass. A mouse model was used to explore specific hypotheses on potential regulatory mechanisms involved in RBC clearance. Material and methods Two steps in vivo biotinylation was used to evaluate the impact of EPO on 3 RBC subpopulations: a young subpopulation (<25 days at treatment initiation) representing the RBC produced, one of intermediate age (25-34 days at treatment initiation) which is neither produced nor eliminated, and an old one (> 34 days at treatment initiation) that is steadily cleared. A model of RBC banking (leucocyte depleted and stored in CPDA solution) was used to evaluate the clearance after transfusion of fluorescently-labeled storage-damaged RBC by flow cytometry. Different recipient models were used to evaluate the impact of specific parameters on RBC clearance including: phlebotomy-induced anemia, normobaric hypoxia, erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) treatment (darbepoietin), splenectomy, doxorubicin-induced inhibition of erythropoiesis and EPO neutralization (anti-EPO rabbit serum) either alone or in combination. Results Decreased clearance of the oldest subpopulation was observed 2 days after ESA treatment and before the increase in RBC production (7 days). After 20 days of treatment, an increased number of RBC from the oldest subpopulation was detected in circulation confirming that senescent RBC clearance is sensitive to EPO signaling. After transfusion, clearance of storage-damaged RBC is reduced by 30% in anemic recipients when compared to non-anemic recipients. RBC clearance is significantly reduced in hypoxic non-anemic recipients, as soon as 6 hours after the initiation of hypoxia, suggesting that hematocrit per se does not affect RBC clearance. In ESA-treated non-anemic non-hypoxic mice, RBC clearance is also reduced showing that EPO signaling is sufficient. To investigate the role of the spleen in this process, splenectomy was combined with the previous models. As expected, RBC clearance was reduced by 20% in splenectomized recipients. RBC clearance is however even more decreased when splenectomy is combined with anemia, hypoxia or ESA treatment compared to splenectomized or control mice, suggesting that EPO downregulation of RBC clearance is not restricted to the spleen. Erythropoiesis inhibition did not alter the anemia-induced downregulation of RBC clearance ruling out the possibility that an erythroid factor is involved in the process. Finally, neutralization of circulating EPO not only abolishes the reduction of RBC clearance observed in anemic recipients, but also increases RBC clearance in both anemic and non-anemic recipients. Taken together these results indicate that EPO regulates RBC clearance during anemia and in steady state (Figure). Conclusion RBC clearance is downregulated during anemia/hypoxia and EPO is sufficient and necessary to mediate this physiological function. RBC clearance downregulation preceded the increase in production rate induced by ESA treatment suggesting it is a very early physiological response to maintain oxygen supply during anemia. The lifespan of a circulating RBC is therefore adaptable and could be regulated by 2 factors: the RBC pro- and anti-phagocytic properties on one side and, on the other side, the MPS level of activity and sensitivity toward these RBC properties. In case of anemia or hypoxia, increased EPO level would act on the RBC itself, on the activity/sensitivity of the MPS or both to downregulate RBC clearance until the equilibrium between oxygen need and supply is restored. Future studies will evaluate if the pathological dysregulation of this mechanism participates in the pathogenesis of anemia or, modulate transfusion efficacy and burden in chronically transfused patients. Local religious beliefs termed as animism and dynamism by Giddens are still found in the religious practices of Indonesian communities. One of such practices occured in Bugis Ujung-Bone society, South Sulawesi. People’s faith in supernatural beings which are mythically believed as giving something meaningful for them is reflected by performing certain rituals in their daily lives. This ritual is performed at home and in a special place called Addewatang. This local belief system was firstly conceived and conceptualized by Sanro Maggangka. It grew into a local ritual tradition in Ujung-Bone society. This local ritual tradition were then acculturated with some formal religion’s activities. In the meantime, the figure of sanro becomes very important as a mediator in every religious ritual practiced by the society. Finally, hegemonic domination by the sanro can be observed in every thoughts and actions of the society, especially in their religious practices. In this research, the phenomenon were analyzed with the phenomenological-constructionist analysis. There are two findings of this research. First, there is a public perception that the practice of religious ritual done so far is believed as a part of their formal religion’s belief system. Second, there is a strong hegemony and dominance of the sanro’s role in conceptualizing this local ritual practice into their formal religion’s activities. The impact of this mythical belief of the role of sanro and “Putta Sereng” can be seen in the faithfulness of the people to act based on sanro’s instructions, the decrease of the people’s faith in their own formal religion, and the occurrence of theological confusions in the younger generations of Ujung-Bone society.

The role of metabolism in modifying age-related differential responses to asthma medications is insufficiently understood. The objective of this study was to determine the role of the metabolome in modifying the effect of age on bronchodilator response (BDR) in individuals with asthma. We used longitudinal measures of BDR and plasma metabolomic profiling in 565 children with asthma from the Childhood Asthma Management Program (CAMP) to identify age by metabolite interactions on BDR. The mean ages at the three studied time-points across 16 years of follow-up in CAMP were 8.8, 12.8, and 16.8 years; the mean BDRs were 11%, 9% and 8%, respectively. Of 501 identified metabolites, 39 (7.8%) demonstrated a significant interaction with age on BDR (p-value < 0.05). We were able to validate two significant interactions in 320 children with asthma from the Genetics of Asthma in Costa Rica Study; 2-hydroxyglutarate, a compound involved in butanoate metabolism (interaction; CAMP: β = −0.004, p = 1.8 × 10−4; GACRS: β = −0.015, p = 0.018), and a cholesterol ester; CE C18:1 (CAMP: β = 0.005, p = 0.006; GACRS: β = 0.023, p = 0.041) Five additional metabolites had a p-value < 0.1 in GACRS, including Gammaminobutyric acid (GABA), C16:0 CE, C20:4 CE, C18.0 CE and ribothymidine. These findings suggest Cholesterol esters and GABA may modify the estimated effect of age on bronchodilator response.

Older adults typically have more difficulties than younger ones in situations that require attention in the visual periphery, such as driving a car or riding a bicycle. Previous studies accordingly found that the breadth of attention decreases in old age when one attention-demanding task is presented at fixation and simultaneously another one in the visual periphery. The present work evaluates the role of eye position for the observed deficit by presenting both tasks in the visual periphery (condition peripheral-peripheral) or by leaving it up to the subjects where in the visual field the tasks appear (condition free-gaze). Our data indicate that attention breadth decreases by 27% from the age of early 20 to the age of late 60 in both conditions. This outcome generalizes previous findings about age-related attention deficits to scenarios that were not explored in previous studies, yet are relevant for everyday behavior.
