A survey of YouTube videos as a source of useful/un-useful information in the field of the prevention and management of burn injuries: A cross-sectional analysis of the English language content

Abstract The study was designed on whether YouTube videos are useful as an information resource in the field of burn injury prevention and management. Current literature on the educational content and quality of burn-related first aid videos on YouTube was reported as inadequate and inaccurate. However, the quality of YouTube videos on various medical and clinical topics has been the subject of many previous studies, and there has been increasing evidence that the content ratio of usefulness was higher than that of non-useful. While hours and even minutes in burn injuries are as precious as gold in terms of outcomes, it would be a significant loss not to use the most popular and easily accessible free social media platform of our time as a tool that can contribute to the prevention of burns and raise awareness. Analysis was conducted with the remaining 96 videos from 240 videos obtained from YouTube, according to possible search terms and exclusion of videos according to predetermined criteria. The Global Quality Score (GQS) and modified DISCERN (m.DISCERN) tools were used to assess the quality and reliability of the videos. Viewer engagement metrics and video properties were also investigated according to the usefulness criteria (e.g., video length, duration on YouTube, topic contents, source uploads, reliability, and quality). Finally, it was revealed that nearly 80 percent of the YouTube videos contained information in the field of the prevention and management of burn injuries deemed useful in this study, comparable to the other medical disciplines' reports in the literature.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the reliability, quality and effectiveness of YouTube videos adressing treatment of keratoconus. Methods This is a retrospective, cross-sectional and register-based study. A YouTube search was performed using the keyword treatment of keratoconus and the first 100 videos that came out were included in the study. The numbers of views, likes, dislikes, comments, daily viewing rate (number of views per day), uploaded source (physicians, public or private institution, health channel or patients), country of origin, video type (patient experience, scholarly information), and describe treatment technique (contact lens, corneal crosslinking, intrastromal corneal ring, topography guided-photorefractive keratectomy, keratoplasty) were evaluated for all videos. They were also evaluated regarding their DISCERN, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), global quality (GQS) and usefulness scores by two independent ophthalmologists. Results Of the top 100 videos, 83 videos met the criteria. The mean DISCERN, JAMA, GQS and usefulness score were 42.92 ± 18.14, 2.7 ± 0.73,3.07 ± 1.25 and 2.99 ± 1.44, respectively. Of the 83 videos, 35(42.2%) had been uploaded by physicians, 19(22.9%) by patients, 15(18.1%) by health channel and 14(16.9%) by institutions/private health institutions. In the correlation analysis, the four scoring systems showed a statistically significant and strong positive correlation with each other (p < 0.001). In addition, viewing rate DISCERN, GQS, usefulness scores, number of likes, dislikes and comments showed a statistically significant positive correlation. Conclusion The content of YouTube videos regarding treatment of keratoconus is of generally good quality and is educational for patients. Increasing the number of videos uploaded by healthcare professionals will increase the quality, reliability and informative features of the videos.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) training and education videos on YouTube.Methods: This study was conducted in English language in descriptive type to evaluate the content, reliability, and quality of Internet videos related to CIC training. The search was performed by using term “clean intermittent catheterization” and “intermittent self catheterization” on YouTube in August 2019. The content of the selected videos was analyzed by 2 independent experts in the field. The DISCERN questionnaire was used to analyze the reliability of the video and the global quality score (GQS) was used for the quality of the video.Results: When the contents of the 64 videos included in the study were examined, it was found that 41 of them contained useful information and 23 of them contained misleading information. DISCERN scores, video coverage scores, and GQS of videos with useful information were found to be statistically higher than those with misleading information (P<0.001). When the sources of the videos were examined, it was seen that 78.05% of the videos containing useful information were published by medical advertisement/for-profit companies (P<0.001). The reliability scores, coverage scores, and GQS of the videos from medical advertisement/for-profit companies were significantly higher than the other sources (P<0.001).Conclusions: In this study, it was seen that the majority of YouTube CIC training videos examined within the scope of the research were published by medical advertisement/for-profit companies and most of these videos contain useful information.

Background: During the last few decades the prevalence of lumbar disc herniation has been increasing constantly, thereby imposing a significant socioeconomic burden. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in both surgical and conservative treatment of lumbar disc herniation, consequently the current COVID-19 pandemic with concomitant lockdowns has led to a shortage of physiotherapeutical care. In the light of these recent events publicly available physiotherapy tutorials may be a useful tool to address this problem. Aim: The main aim of this study was to assess the quality of online physiotherapy exercise tutorials for lumbar disc herniation. Materials & Methods: With YouTube being a widely known and used platform we screened 240 of the most viewed videos. A total of 76 videos met the inclusion criteria and were statistically analyzed. The videos were assessed using Global Quality Score, DISCERN Score and JAMA benchmark criteria and in regard to their applicability. Results: They displayed a wide range of views (44,969 to 5,448,717), likes (66 to 155,079) and dislikes (6 to 2339). Neither the number of “Views”, “Likes”, nor “Dislikes” was found to have a significant association with any of the quality measures used in this study. Conclusion: Overall quality grade was determined as “moderate”. Based on the data examined in this study, the use of YouTube videos as a source of therapy advice for lumbar spine disc herniation cannot be recommended universally.

Background:Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a family of chronic inflammatory disorders. Social media, such as YouTube, is a popular online platform where patients often visit for information. However, the validity of the content uploaded onto YouTube is not known.Objectives:This study aimed to evaluate the content, reliability and quality of the most viewed English-language YouTube videos on SpA.Methods:Keywords “spondyloarthritis”, “spondyloarthropathy” and “ankylosing spondylitis” were searched on YouTube on October 7th, 2019. The top 270 videos were screened. Videos were excluded if they were irrelevant, in non-English language or if they had no audio. Total number of views, duration on YouTube (days), video length, upload date, number of likes, dislikes, subscribers and comments were recorded for videos. A modified 5-point DISCERN tool1and the 5-point Global Quality Scale (GQS) score2were used to assess the reliability and quality of the videos, with higher scores indicating greater reliability and quality respectively.Results:Two hundred of 270 videos were included in the final analysis [61.5% from healthcare professionals, 37.0% from patients, 1.5% from news channels]. Of the 200 videos, 15 were uploaded within the last year and 112 in the last five years. 120 (60%) were categorized as useful information (Group 1), 6 (3%) as misleading information (Group 2), 52 (26%) as useful patient opinion (Group 3) and 22 (11%) as misleading patient opinion (Group 4). Useful videos were mainly from healthcare professionals or patients (86%). Useful videos (Group 1 and 3) had higher median (IQR) number of subscribers [2700 (14700) vs 211 (457), p < 0.01], reliability scores [3 (1) vs 2 (1), p < 0.01] and GQS scores [3 (1) vs. 2 (1), p < 0.001] compared to misleading videos (Group 2 and 4), respectively.Videos uploaded by healthcare professionals tended to have more useful information [94% (116 of 123) vs. 66% (49 of 74), p < 0.001] and had higher median (IQR) reliability scores [3 (1) vs 2 (1), p < 0.001] and GQS scores [3 (2) vs 2 (1), p < 0.001] compared to patient uploaded videos respectively. Of the 5 (out of 123) videos from healthcare professionals that had misleading information, it was because of outdated information on diagnosis (3 videos) and treatment (5 videos) of SpA. Of the 22 videos that had misleading patient opinion, 9 (41%) wrongly described the clinical features for SpA and 14 (64%) portrayed the current evidence based treatment options as ineffective and described alternative treatment plans (i.e. diet restrictions, complementary and alternative medicine).Conclusion:The majority of English language YouTube videos have useful information on the topic of SpA, however, 31% of patient opinions have inaccurate information on the clinical features and treatment options, and viewers need to be cognisant of these “fake news”.References:[1]Charnock D, Shepperd S, Needham G, Gann R (1999) DISCERN: an instrument for judging the quality of written consumer health information on treatment choices. BACKGROUND Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease that is chronic in nature. In addition to the physical symptoms, there are substantial quality of life issues that patients with rosacea experience, largely due to the visible nature in which rosacea manifests. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to describe the content related to rosacea in highly viewed English- and Spanish-language videos on YouTube. METHODS We coded identifying information for each video and categories including characteristics of rosacea, clinical solutions, and alternative solutions. The 100 YouTube videos examined were viewed 18.5 million times between 2006 and 2020, and 57.3% (10,652,665/18,592,742) of these views were of consumer videos. RESULTS Videos posted by consumers more often promoted or were trying to sell a product or procedure (32/55, 58% of consumers vs 10/31, 32% of medical professionals and 4/14, 29% of television, internet, news, or entertainment sources; <i>P</i>=.03) and more frequently mentioned the use of makeup or other ways to cover up rosacea (30/55, 55% of consumers vs 6/31, 19% of medical professionals and 2/14, 14% of television, internet, news, or entertainment sources; <i>P</i>&lt;.001). Videos sourced from medical professionals more often mentioned medication (17/31, 55%) than videos uploaded by consumers (14/55, 25%) or TV, internet, news, or entertainment sources (3/14, 21%) (<i>P</i>=.01). CONCLUSIONS Given that rosacea is experienced differently for each person, consumer advice that works for one individual may not work for another. There is a need for reliable videos on rosacea to emphasize this and clarify misconceptions.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to assess quality of the most popular cholesteatoma videos on YouTube using recognized scoring systems and to determine if video quality metrics correlated with video popularity based on likes and views Design: Cross sectional survey of available data Setting: Metadata acquisition using YouTube searches using Australian IP addresses Participants: Three independent neuro-otologists partaking in scoring videos Main outcome measures: Each video was viewed and scored by three independent assessors using both a novel tool to score the usefulness of the video as well as the validated DISCERN scoring tool. Popularity metrics were analyzed and compared to video popularity. Results: A total of 90 YouTube videos were analyzed with an average 55,292 views per video with an average of 271 likes and 22 dislikes. The inter-rater correlation was moderate with Fleiss-kappa score 0.42 [P < 0.01] using a novel scoring tool for cholesteatoma and inter-rater correlation coefficient was 0.78 [95% CI = 0.58 - 0.90] indicating good reliability for DISCERN scores. The overall video quality was poor with higher DISCERN scores found in videos uploaded from Academic Institutions. Conclusions: Informative video quality on YouTube on cholesteatoma is overall of poor quality. Videos with unclassified sources or more dislikes correlated poorly with video quality. Given the increase in patients turning to the internet for information regarding their health conditions, otology and otolaryngology societies should be encouraged to publish high quality YouTube videos on cholesteatoma and other ear conditions.

Abstract Occupational burns are among the important causes of work-related injuries. We aimed to investigate the epidemiology and reasons of occupational burns and thereby to emphasize preventive measures. Between January 2017 and December 2018, the data of major occupational burn injury patients admitted to our burn center were evaluated in this cross-sectional retrospective study. During the study period 342 patients older than 16 years were admitted to the burn center. Among them 80 patients with occupational burns (23.4%) were identified. The mean age of the patients was 34.73 ± 12.3 years. Seventy-eight patients (97.5%) were male. Electrical burns and flame burns were the two leading type of occupational burns. The most common occupation of our patients was construction work. Dangerous behavior, carelessness, lack of protective equipment, and failure to follow instructions were causes of injury. Only 14 patients (17.5%) experienced unavoidable accident. Thirty-seven patients (46.3%) worked on temporary basis. Occupational experience was under 5 years in majority of the cases (62.5%). For the occupational burns the percentage of burned TBSA was 17.08 ± 14.5 (1–60) and the length of hospital stay was 23.94 ± 21.9 days (2–106). There were no significant differences between occupational and nonoccupational burn injuries considering TBSA, total length of hospital stay, and complications (P &gt; .05). Occupational burn injuries are common in less experienced and younger workers. Therefore, recognition of the problem and maintaining awareness is important. In order to prevent occupational accidents and burns, occupational health and safety rules must be obeyed.

Objective This study analyzes the quality and reliability of otitis media (OM) videos on Facebook and investigates whether the videos shared within the Facebook community are considered to be a valuable educational tool. The results of this study are important for providing clinicians with the necessary understanding about the video content that their patients may be exposed to. Study Design Cross-sectional analysis of video content. Setting A new Facebook account was created to carry out a search for videos on OM. Methods Inclusion criteria were as follows: videos intended for educating patients or guardians on OM, videos in the English language, and videos with at least 1 share. Results A total of 364 videos were screened, and 62 fit our inclusion criteria for analysis. The majority (56%) of OM videos on Facebook focused on complementary and alternative medication without mentioning any current guidelines. A limited amount of videos (29%) made any mention to surgical treatment options for OM. There was a strong positive correlation (rho = 0.8419, P < .001) between a video’s content and its reliability. There was no correlation seen between a video’s content and its shares (rho = −0.142, P = .1359). Conclusions The majority of OM videos on Facebook are inadequate for educational value. Clinicians should know about the existence of videos on OM and the quality of information that parents are exposed to.
