This chapter discusses the challenge of launching student-led performing and creative groups without taking a heavy-handed role in their development. The chapter gives strategies for supporting student-led groups so that they attain the continuity of membership enjoyed by traditional school ensembles. Specifically, it considers three models of student-led groups. The first model is the recording club, a loosely knit group of like-minded students doing self-directed recording projects in the studio. Second is a model based on rock bands and open-mic nights, student-organized ensembles, and performance series that are supported by the school but that operate independently of formal classroom structures. The third model is the electronic music group, a novel and successful performing ensemble combining DJs, instrumentalists, vocalists, and emcees. Lebanon High School’s Electronic Music Group is described: its technical onstage setup, its nontraditional performance venues, its repertoire and creative ethos, and the faculty facilitation that makes it sustainable in a school environment.

Abstract. Twin-engine propeller aircraft accidents occur due to mechanical reasons as well as human error, such as misidentifying a failed engine. This paper proposes a visual indicator as an alternative method to the dead leg–dead engine procedure to identify a failed engine. In total, 50 pilots without a multi-engine rating were randomly assigned to a traditional (dead leg–dead engine) or an alternative (visual indicator) group. Participants performed three takeoffs in a flight simulator with a simulated engine failure after rotation. Participants in the alternative group identified the failed engine faster than the traditional group. A visual indicator may improve pilot accuracy and performance during engine-out emergencies and is recommended as a possible alternative for twin-engine propeller aircraft.

Pupil with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Over the past twenty years childhood OCD has received more attention than any other anxiety disorder that occurs in the childhood. The increasing interest and research in this area have led to increasing number of diagnoses of OCD in children and adolescents, which affects both specialists and teachers. Depending on the severity of symptoms OCD has a detrimental effect upon child's school performance, which can lead almost to the impossibility to concentrate on school and associated duties. This article is devoted to the obsessive-compulsive disorder and its specifics in children, focusing on the impact of this disorder on behaviour, experience and performance of the child in the school environment. It mentions how important is the role of the teacher in whose class the pupil with this diagnosis is and it points out that it is necessary to increase teachers' competence to identify children with OCD symptoms, to take the disease into the account, to adapt the course of teaching and to introduce such measures that could help children reduce the anxiety and maintain (or increase) the school performance within and in accordance with the school regulations and curriculum.

AbstractOur paper consists of four parts. In the first part, we describe the challenge of the pervasive and permanent philosophical disagreement over philosophers’ epistemic self-esteem. In the second part, we investigate the attitude of philosophers who have high epistemic self-esteem even in the face of philosophical disagreement and who believe they have well-grounded philosophical knowledge. In the third section, we focus on the attitude of philosophers who maintain a moderate level of epistemic self-esteem because they do not attribute substantive philosophical knowledge to themselves but still believe that they have epistemic right to defend substantive philosophical beliefs. In the fourth section, we analyse the attitude of philosophers who have a low level of epistemic self-esteem in relation to substantive philosophical beliefs and make no attempt to defend those beliefs. We argue that when faced with philosophical disagreement philosophers either have to deny that the dissenting philosophers are their epistemic peers or have to admit that doing philosophy is less meaningful than it seemed before. In this second case, philosophical activity and performance should not contribute to the philosophers’ overall epistemic self-esteem to any significant extent.

Advances in technology call for a parallel evolution in the software. New techniques are needed to support this dynamism, to track and guide its evolution process. This applies especially in the field of embedded systems, and certainly in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), where hardware platforms and software environments change very quickly. Commonly, operating systems play a key role in the development process of any application. The most used operating system in WSNs is TinyOS, currently at its TinyOS 2.1.2 version. The evolution from TinyOS 1.x and TinyOS 2.x made the applications developed on TinyOS 1.x obsolete. In other words, these applications are not compatible out-of-the-box with TinyOS 2.x and require a porting action. In this paper, we discuss on the porting of embedded system (i.e., Wireless Sensor Networks) applications in response to operating systems’ evolution. In particular, using a model-based approach, we report the porting we did of Agilla, a Mobile-Agent Middleware (MAMW) for WSNs, on TinyOS 2.x, which we refer to as Agilla 2. We also provide a comparative analysis about the characteristics of Agilla 2 versus Agilla. The proposed Agilla 2 is compatible with TinyOS 2.x, has full capabilities and provides new features, as shown by the maintainability and performance measurement presented in this paper. An additional valuable result is the architectural modeling of Agilla and Agilla 2, missing before, which extends its documentation and improves its maintainability.

School health program is an effort to nurture and develop healthy habits conducted in an integrated manner through educational programs, health services and health care in the school environment. Goals: The purpose of this study is to identify the implementation of teacher’s evaluation about School Health Unit (UKS) program in the State Primary School No.060910 Medan 2017. Methods: The research is a descriptive study with a sample of 23 people is a teacher of elementary school No. 060 910 Medan 2017. Field data collection tool used was a questionnaire. Results: The results of this study obtained the overall implementation of the UKS program implemented fairly that is 56.5%. UKS implementation of school health education activities are carried out fairly, that is 62.5%, the activities carried out with sufficient health care, which is 65.2% and the activities of health coaching healthy school environment performing well, which is 73.9%. Conclusion: Puskesmas are expected to improve their cooperation and performance with schools in their work areas, especially in improving health services. Puskesmas with schools need to discuss the UKS activities plan that will be done in school, so that can be arranged schedule of implementation and their respective duties. Puskesmas are also expected to work together both in materials and ideas to improve the implementation of UKS in each school.

Children spend more time in schools than in any other place except at home. Children are more susceptible than adults to effects of toxic exposure, but also to poor acoustic conditions. It is known for some time that unsatisfactory environmental conditions, can have both short-term and long-term health effects, and can affect productivity or learning ability of the children. The underlying literature study focusses on the role of the indoor school environment on the health, comfort and performance of children in classrooms. In the last decades, many studies all over the world have been performed to document the indoor environment in classrooms and to examine relations with diseases and disorders. An inventory is made of these studies, major identified issues are discussed and ‘new’ directions of research are proposed. It is concluded that new generation research studies should be focussed on engagement of the children in an active way, preferable in semi-lab environments, and taking account of all aspects and interactions between them.

Education for international understanding in Japan was focused to develop its own national identity as well as to recognize its coexistence through intercultural education. Then, we have investigated the opinions of Japanese school teachers in terms of their recognition of the necessary content to introduce school instruction of intercultural education using a questionnaire method. In the questionnaire, 14 items of three principles were extracted from the criteria of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). For analyzing the collected data, the geometric mean was used. Subsequently, a one-way ANOVA test and multiple-comparison procedures were conducted. By including teachers in suburban areas in Japan, we obtained 123 valid responses. All items showed a necessary level of geometric means, and particularly items of the first principle “respect cultural identity” and items of the second principle “provide knowledge for participation” showed statistically significant positive necessity levels. However, an answer of “I have never thought” increased in the third principle “provide a chance to contribute” that was closely related to present world concern of global citizenship education and statistically was not significant. From the result of the multiple-comparison procedures of the second principle and the third principle, seven pairs of statistically different items were extracted. Then, we discussed the enhancement between Japan and UNESCO and influence of school environment in Japan.
