Today’s world of work is rapidly changing. The on-demand economy is on the rise, the number of temporary contracts is increasing, major industries are being disrupted by the latest wave of digital innovation, and increasingly more jobs are being replaced by machines. As a result of these labor market developments, people’s careers have become more dynamic and more uncertain. With regard to fostering career progress in this dynamic career landscape, however, existing perspectives still draw heavily on linear frameworks that involve the development of a clear set of career goals and plans. Such approaches to career progress are at odds with the reality of today’s world of work. That is, contemporary careers rarely unfold as intended or imagined: No matter how much people analyze their aspirations and opportunities while planning their careers, unexpected developments can bring unforeseen changes. Drawing on the career pathways framework, this chapter proposes a proactive approach to career pathways and discusses the key factors that can contribute to career progress in today’s dynamic work context. This framework also encapsulates the dialogical dynamics between one’s “internal” and “external” career management. Such a framework can be helpful for workers to successfully steer their careers in today’s world of work.

AbstractWe investigate the behavior of aggregate hours supplied by workers in permanent (open-ended) contracts and temporary contracts, distinguishing changes in employment (extensive margin) and hours per worker (intensive margin). We focus on the differences between the Great Recession and the start of the COVID-19 Recession. In the Great Recession, the loss in aggregate hours is largely accounted for by employment losses (hours per worker did not adjust) and initially mainly by workers in temporary contracts. In contrast, in the early stages of the COVID-19 Recession, approximately sixty percent of the drop in aggregate hours is accounted for by permanent workers that do not only adjust hours per worker (beyond average) but also face employment losses—accounting for one-third of the total employment losses in the economy. We argue that our comparison across recessions allows for a more general discussion on the impact of adjustment frictions in the dual labor market and the effects policy, in particular the short-time work policy (ERTE) in Spain.

This article aims at understanding and analyzing the features of value-based attitudes to work and career motivations of modern youth in the context of the theory of generations. The principles of building and developing the career of the young generation in the conditions of labor market transformation as a result of technological and informational innovations are formulated. The article presents the results of a survey of senior graduate students of leading universities in Irkutsk Oblast. The survey shows the most preferred ways of employment and key factors in choosing a future job. The results of the study can be used by regional structures for interaction with young people to make managerial decisions, by employers interested in attracting and securing promising young employees, as well as by young specialists themselves when determining their labor motivations and career paths.

Comparing the Nordic countries, this article examines different combinations of permanent and temporary employment protection legislation, and whether such differences are reflected in patterns of labor market transitions. We find higher levels of transitions from unemployment to temporary contracts in Sweden and Finland, with lax regulation of temporary contracts and strict regulation of permanent contracts. Further, temporary employees are integrated into permanent contracts in countries with lax (Denmark) or strict (Norway) regulation of permanent contracts, while this is not the case in Finland and Sweden. For these countries, the study indicates a certain degree of labor market duality, with low mobility from temporary to permanent employment contracts.

University students set career goals during their academic journey in order to facilitate their transition to the labor market. Career goals can nonetheless be accompanied by doubt, even among the most determined students. The purpose of this study (N = 234) was to investigate the role of career doubt on the progress made by university students in the simultaneous pursuit of their academic and career goals. We examined the mediating role of academic and career coping strategies in the relationship between career doubt and academic and career goal progress. The results from structural equation modeling revealed a significant indirect effect for task-oriented coping in the relationships between career doubt and both career progress and academic progress. Overall, these results clarify the mechanisms by which university students pursue their goals as a preliminary effort to inform practitioners about the role of coping to better prepare students for a successful transition to the labor market.

Gender subjectivity processes in women workingin copper mining in Chile. The case of El Teniente divisionAbstractThe labor market in Chile has had a growing female participation, which has blurred the traditional margins of the gender division of labor. This is evidenced by the emerging phenomenon of incorporating women in copper mining productive work.  Codelco company has justified this extensionin its work force by the benefits it implies in productivity and workingenvironment. However, little has been said from the point of view of actors involved. Hence this article is anchored in the sociology of the experienceof François Dubet, in order to examine, through the stories of the women working at El Teniente division, the gender subjectivity processes structured from this work experience. Key factors that shape these processes are given by tragedies, challenges, tensions in their identity and their own judgments about their experience in mining, which leads them to break the female“social identity” and accept the wish of being authors of their own lives, froman ethical project for gender equality. Keywords: Work experience, gender subjectivity, women, mining.Processos de subjetividade de gênero nas trabalhadoras da mineração do cobre no Chile. We describe how idiosyncratic deals (I-deals), in this case I-deals focused on workers’ employability enhancement, can serve as a powerful strategic HR tool for simultaneously meeting both the strategic goals of employers and the career goals of employees. Building on a sustainable career perspective, I-deals are interpreted as highly valuable, as they can help individual employees to more easily adapt to the fast-changing environments that nowadays characterize society and the labor market. After theoretical outlines on the concepts of I-deals and employability, we argue that I-deals can form the basis for integrative employment relationships aimed at employability enhancement. This article concludes with concrete recommendations for practice, indicating that in order to enable the sound use of I-deals as a strategic HR tool, organizations should discuss I-deals and employability openly through constructive dialogue. Moreover, examples for achieving this through specific practices, such as working with employability coaches and world cafés on employability, are described.
