The Introduction situates the theme of guanxi in the particular treatment developed in the book. Guanxi is described in terms of its features, the highly personalized connection between those who participate in a guanxi, and its application for acquisition of social and material goods. It is also noted that as a social relation guanxi generates expectations of the participants which have characteristic emotional and ethical dimensions. As well as mentioning the broader literature on guanxi the Introduction indicates the nature of a sociological apprehension of guanxi, provided in this book, through a brief overview of the critical nature of sociology, in which social relations are subject to systematic investigation, historical contextualization, and in which the cultural framework through which interpretive orientations and sensibilities are conveyed is acknowledged. The introduction goes on to lay out a comprehensive summary of the six chapters which follow.

In the real world, wireless mobile devices are carried by humans. For this reason, it is useful if mobility models as simulation tools used to test routing protocols and other MANET-DTN features follow the behaviour of humans. In this paper, we propose a new social based mobility model called Students Social Based Mobility Model (SSBMM). This mobility model is inspired by the daily routine of student’s life. Since many current social based mobility models give nodes freedom in terms of movement according to social feeling and attractivity to other nodes or places, we focus more on the mandatory part of our life, such as going to work and school. In the case of students, this mandatory part of their life is studying in university according to their schedule. In their free time, they move and behave according to attractivity to other nodes or places of their origin. Finally, proposed SSBMM was tested and verified by Tools for Evaluation of Social Relation in Mobility Models and compared with random based mobility models. At the end, SSBMM was simulated to examine the impact of social relations on routing protocols.

Abstract‘Social relation of production’ is a key term in Marx's theory of history, for the social relations of production of a society give that society its fundamental character and make it, for example, a capitalist rather than some other kind of society.

The subject of interest in the presented text is the possible relationship between a number of personality traits of the individual and its functioning in social relation. Dealing with the psychopathic features of personality and their importance in social relations, the authors pay attention to psychopathy, as well as narcissistic features and Machiavellianism in individual’s activity. These three traits since the beginning of the 21st century have aroused vivid interest of researchers and therapists attempting empirical verification of hypotheses in this area. It is also worth indicating. The above-mentioned categories of behavior form the dark triad of personality. Researchers draw our attention to clinical interpretations regarding diagnostic criteria enabling the recognition of psychopathic features and the broader dark triad. This sometimes carry on to referring to the concept of sub-clinical psychopathy that does not meet the diagnostic criteria used in the classification of mental disorders. The authors also try to interpret the negative role of these features in social relations.

Image scene graph is a semantic structural representation which can not only show what objects are in the image, but also infer the relationships and interactions among them. Despite the recent success in object detection using deep neural networks, automatically recognizing social relations of objects in images remains a challenging task due to the significant gap between the domains of visual content and social relation. In this work, we translate the scene graph into an Attentive Gated Graph Neural Network which can propagate a message by visual relationship embedding. More specifically, nodes in gated neural networks can represent objects in the image, and edges can be regarded as relationships among objects. In this network, an attention mechanism is applied to measure the strength of the relationship between objects. It can increase the accuracy of object classification and reduce the complexity of relationship classification. Extensive experiments on the widely adopted Visual Genome Dataset show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This article aims to advance the historical-materialist understanding of racism by addressing some central theoretical questions. It argues that racism should be understood as a social relation of oppression rather than as solely or primarily an ideology, and suggests that a historical-materialist concept of race is necessary in order to capture features of societies shaped by historically specific racisms. A carefully conceived concept of privilege is also required if we are to grasp the contradictory ways in which members of dominant racial groups are affected by social relations of racial oppression. The persistence of racism today should be explained as a consequence of two dimensions of the capitalist mode of production – imperialism and the contribution of racism to profitability – and of a social property emergent from racism: the efforts of members of dominant groups to preserve their advantages relative to the racially oppressed.

The article investigates the social relations between Indonesian immigrants and the multicultural Muslim community in London by examining the applicability of the Ummah concept, in the context of the diaspora. The Muslim diaspora, though their similarity of faith, has always contained internal diversity and fragmentation. Likewise, different religious trajectories of Muslim immigrants as illustrated by Indonesians in London have been identified to shape different understandings of unity and diversity of Muslims, which forge different forms of social relation with fellow Muslim immigrants in the city. The traditionalist London Indonesians have trivialized the unity of Muslim in diaspora through daily encounters yet maintained inevitable different ethnic affinities and religious-sectarian affiliations as a wall dividing them altogether. The revivalist Indonesians have construed the diasporic unity of Muslims as an idealized-normative concept that should be realized socially, culturally and politically by suppressing internal ethnic, national and religious-sectarian fragmentations. While the secularist Indonesians have shown an apathetic position to the implausibility of the diasporic unity of Muslims due to its irreconcilable perceived internal diversities and divisions.

This paper presents the report of a survey that aimed to investigate the role of union leaders in gestation structures of domination in Brazilian unions adopting an interpretative Weberian analysis. Weberian concepts, such as domination, social relation and legitimacy were articulated to explain, in a qualitative approach, the internal social relations within trade unions. The exploratory analysis of 26 interviews conceded by trade union leaders allowed the identification of five groups of orders that constitute maxims and rules of action among the union leaders. This paper focuses on the documental analysis of 115 documents looking for evidence of the domination structures genesis. The documents revealed that these structures go back to the trade union training process, especially from the decade 1970s. The data analysis was structured in five groups of orders: ethics; political repression; ideology; mistrust between parts; and validity of laws. The study concluded by the pertinence of the adoption of the interpretative Weberian approach to explain the action of administrative staff (as in Weber, the influential individuals on the decision making process within the organization) related to the making and preservation of the structures of domination, confirming the Weberian theory.

Like the understood by the common view that tahlilan is a very stronger tradition of the community of Nahdhatul Ulama'. Its, because NU society makes tahlilan as one of his trademark. However, over time, now tahlilan not just implemented by NU community, but Muhammadiyah community which initially clearly reject tahlilan because it is considered as bid’ah, now can accept and implement it. This phenomenon according to the author is very unique to be reviewed. In this case the author tries to take the example of a group of community Muhammadiyah in Gulurejo Village, District Lendah, Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta as research subjects. This research explanations about the influence of perceptions of tahlilan tradition among the Muhammadiyah community of Gulurejo Village on social relations. The purpose of this research is to know the perception of Muhammadiyah community of Gulurejo Village about the existence of tahlilan and the extent of its implication in social relation among the people in Gulurejo Village.Data in this research is obtained through observation and in-depth interview with some of Muhammadiyah of Gulurejo Village. Data collected through the method of written documents such as village archives and some stories from local community figures related to this research. Then the data obtained were analyzed by using qualitative descriptive method, that is to describe systematically and accurately about facts and characteristics about the population. From this research, it was found that the tradition of tahlilan held by the Muhammadiyah community in Gulurejo Village is a manifestation of social empathy towards others and its existence can reduce their individualistic attitude.[Seperti yang dipahami oleh pandangan umum bahwa tahlilan merupakan tradisi yang sangat kental dengan masyarakat Nahdhatul Ulama’.

Abstract—This study aims to find out about the phubbing phenomenon as a degradation of social relations as a result of social media. The term phubbing is an abbreviation of the words phone and snubbing, which are used to show the attitude of hurting the other person by using an excessive smartphone. This type of research used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The data needed in this study are qualitative data as primary data in the form of images, words and not numbers in a discourse regarding the phubbing phenomenon as a degradation of social relations as a result of social media. Based on the results of the research, it is found that phubbing behavior can threaten the disruption of ongoing communication relationships, causing social degradation. The social degradation that occurs is due to the impact of phubbing perpetrators' indifference to their environment because they are too busy using smartphones, especially in the use of social media. Therefore it is necessary to limit and control the use of social media properly so that the phubbing phenomenon can be resolved immediately and the degradation of social relations does not occur. Women show higher sensitivity than men to emotional and social cues and are therefore better in showing empathy with others and in deciphering other’s intentions and mental states. These sex differences have been linked to hormonal levels. However, it remains unclear how hormones modulate neural mechanisms underlying empathic processes. To assess effects of chronic hormonal treatment, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used in a group of female-to-male transsexuals before and during androgen therapy and a group of female and male controls while they watched pictures portraying emotionally negative or neutral situations (emotional content) involving one or two persons (social relation). Before therapy, the medial superior frontal gyrus and left inferior frontal gyrus showed greater activations for emotional than neutral stimuli. The posterior superior temporal sulcus showed greater activations for emotional vs. neutral stimuli and for social relations relative to pictures of single persons. Long-term androgen administration reduced the pSTS activity in response to emotional stimuli as well as its response to social relation. More importantly, the functional connectivity among frontal, temporal and striatal regions was weakened while the connectivity among limbic regions was strengthened as the androgen level increased during hormone therapy. This pattern of change was similar to the sex difference observed between female vs. male controls. Thus, making a brain more male by the application of androgens not only reduced the activity of a core neural hub but also markedly altered the organization of the brain network supporting emotional and social cognitive processes related to empathy and mentalizing.
