This closing reflection reconsiders the book’s argument retrospectively, from the point of view of the current obsession with facts. It offers evidence that a number of contemporary writers (Annie Ernaux, François Bon, Emmanuel Carrère) directly repudiate fiction in the 1980s and 1990s and turn to experiments with documentary or factual narration. The writers associated with the Inculte group (Maylis de Kerangal, Emmanuelle Pireyre) privilege documentary investigation without rejecting fiction, while Éric Vuillard, Yannick Haenel, or Laurent Binet mobilize the historical archive in documentary or docufictional works. This proliferation of documentary forms reconnects with and expands the earlier documentary practices studied in this book, while also responding to the omnipresence of data and information in the digital age.

Introduction. The article publishes and provides a historical legal analysis of one letter by Prince Uday, ruler of Khorchin Khoshun (Horqin Banner) in Inner Mongolia at the end of 19th – first quarter of 20th century, who sent it to Pyotr Stolypin, the Prime-Minister of the Russian Empire, in 1910. This letter is a part of a file kept in the Russian State Historical Archive (St. Petersburg, Russia) in original Mongolian as well as in its Russian translation. As is known, the document was not published before. Goals. The aim of research is to extract from the Uday’s note — the information on the international legal status of Inner Mongolia which is given from the local ruler’s point of view. Results. The results of the research confirm the value of the note as a source, although its author attempted to emphasize his own significance in the eyes of the Russian authorities. Coupled with materials of other contemporaries (Russian and Western diplomats, intelligence officers, missionaries, merchants and scientists) it allows to give an authentic view on the status of Inner Mongolia at the international scene at the edge of 19th – 20th centuries. The utmost interest should be paid to the dynamics of relations of rulers of Inner Mongolia with the Qing imperial authorities that initiated a forced colonization of Mongolian lands through resettlement of Chinese peasant colonists, changes in relations of Manchu administration and Mongol feudal lords with Russian regional authorities and merchants, as well as strengthening of the Japanese influence in the region.

A historical-critical study (not exhaustive but partial and significant), from an intermedia point of view, on what happened in Italy around the Video Art after the advent of digital age, is what we want to try to sketch here in a map of concepts, artists, texts, useful to read the most recent artistic, critical and expositive evolutions of the videographic imaginary. The reflection in Italy on Video Art has always been fragmentary, not systemic, it is therefore necessary to extend it over exhibitions, festivals, reviews, indipendent spaces, archives and significant critical texts.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the main benefits and risks of knowledge visualization in the current digital age.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on a qualitative and explorative research to frame the benefits and risks of knowledge visualization. The emerging views of 57 small and medium-sized entrepreneurs (SMEs) managers are examined.FindingsThe findings reveal both benefits and risks related to knowledge visualization. The two aggregate dimensions (i.e. benefits and risks) are supported by six second-order and five second-order categories, respectively. On one side, the main benefits highlighted in the study are related to: stakeholder engagement, flexibility, knowledge transfer, signaling role, agility and interactivity; on the other side, the risks identified are related to: complexity, absorptive capacity, divergences, capabilities and ineffectiveness.Originality/valueThe research highlights novel insights in the emerging field of knowledge visualization and extends current literature. It provides useful implication from both a theoretical and practical point of view.

Introduction. The article considers the government policy for the Cossacks in the 1860s. During this period, the processes of organization/reorganization of the Cossack troops were most brightly shown. These processes were developed against the background of discussions between imperial officials about the roles and values of the Cossacks from the point of view of his military and colonization potential. Only the Semirechensky (Almaty) army created in 1867 was a “new” Cossack army for the empire. Methods and materials. As the main material for writing the article the contemporary records found in the 330th fund of the Russian state military and historical archive (Moscow) and the Historical archive of Omsk region (Omsk) served. The note of the chief of Tersky region in 1863–1875 M.T. Loris-Melikov “About education of the Transcaucasian Cossack army”, prepared in December, 1868, is of particular importance. The specifics of the sources attracted required the use of methods of source studies in accordance with the type of documents under consideration, followed by the structural analysis of the identified data based on the systematic approach. Discussion. The announced subject is poorly developed in historical literature, and only the studying of Semirechensky Cossack army history has a long tradition. Separately, the question of the place of the Cossacks in the projects for the administrative structure of the Central Asian possessions of the empire and plans for the training of new troops, except for Semirechensk, has not yet been considered in historiography. Analysis. At the initiative of the governor general of Western Siberia A.P. Khrushchov in 1867–1868, projects on the organizations of the Irtysh, Akmola, Semipalatinsk Cossack troops, as well as plans for the resettlement of the Cossacks to the lands bordering Western China, were prepared. Despite the support of the initiatives of A.P. Khrushchov from the Minister of War D.A. Milyutin and the Steppe commission, the projected Cossack troops nevertheless were not created, and the Cossack colonization of border territories did not take place. The negative decision of the authorities was also made on the note of the chief of Tersky region M.T. Loris-Melikov “About education of the Transcaucasian Cossack army” (1868). Conclusions. The article examines the reasons why colonization plans and projects for the creation of new Cossack troops were unclaimed in the 1860s.

The problem of recreating historical and cultural events and phenomena in architectural images is raised for the first time in Belarusian art criticism. The work is devoted to the scientific understanding of images of modern architectural objects that reflect the theme of history and culture in the context of the simulated environment of society. Images of modern architecture are interpreted from the point of view of reflecting the world picture in their content and visualizing the memory of peoples about the historical past and cultural assets of human civilization. The research is based on an artistic and imaginative concept that allows us to interpret objects of modern architecture in the unity of three principles – as a cultural phenomenon of the digital age, as a cultural and historical phenomenon, as well as a way, form and product of mastering and reflecting reality. The article reveals the peculiarities of interpretation of historical and cultural themes in the imagery of modern buildings. The research focuses on the technological aspect of building modeling in the context of figurative architecture of the digital age. Through the deciphering of parables, the ideas of a person and society about spiritual values are revealed.

Queer comics have been a staple of LGBTQIA+ culture, from independent and underground comics beginning in the late 1960s to web comics in the current digital age. Comics are a uniquely queer art form, as comics scholar Hillary Chute has argued, consistently marginalized in the art world. Queer comics have also principally been produced by and for queer audiences, with mainstream recognition not being their primary goal. This marginalization has, in some sense, been a benefit, as these comics have not been captive to the pressures of capitalist aesthetics. This makes queer comics a rich historical archive for understanding queer life and queer communities. Collections of queer comics from the late 1960s and onward have recently been published, making large archives of work widely available. The Queer Zine Archive Project online also houses a large volume of underground and self-published material. There are some affordances inherent to the medium of comics which make it a distinctly powerful medium for queer self-expression and representation. In comics, the passage of time is represented through the space of the page, which makes complex expressions of queer temporality possible. The form is also quite intimate, particularly hand-drawn comics, which retain their original form rather than being translated into type. The reader plays a significant role in the construction of meaning in comics, as what happens between panels in the “gutter” (and is thus not pictured) is as much a part of the story as what is pictured within the panels. In addition to the value of reading queer stories in comic form, incorporating making comics and other creative practices into pedagogy is a powerful way to engage in queer worldmaking.

This chapter illustrates Elizabeth Gaskell's originality and success, and shows how she used her understanding of literary tradition to articulate and develop her new female point of view on the new urban poverty caused by industrialization. Her consciousness of isolation in her task led her to draw on both earlier and contemporary writers for support and motivated her to provide her successors and contemporaries with models and encouragement. As the chapter shows, Mary Barton emerged from Gaskell's wide reading, her habit of regular writing, with a Unitarian sense of duty and the obligation to tell the truth. It was also motivated by the hope of distracting herself from the personal tragedy of her baby son Willie's death in 1845. At the same time, Gaskell made tradition part of the subject matter of her novel when she showed Mary Barton throwing off the expectations about female behavior which had constrained her and when she dramatized John Carson's religious obligation to forgive John Barton.
